GaAs nanowires were grown on GaAs (111)B substrates in a gas source molecular beam epitaxy system, using self-assembled Au particles with diameters between 25 and 200 nm as the catalytic agents. The growth rate and structure of the nanowires were investigated for substrate temperatures between 500 and $600^{\circ}C$ to study the mass transport mechanisms that drive the growth of these crystals. The possibilities for fabrication of novel magnetic nanostructures by suitable choice of growth conditions are discussed.
We fabricated the textured silicon (Si) surface on Si substrates by the electrochemical etching using gold (Au) nanoparticle catalysts. The antireflective property of the fabricated Si nanostructures was improved. The Au nanoparticles of ~20-150 nm were formed by the rapid thermal annealing using thermally evaporated Au films on Si. In the chemical etching, the aqueous solution containing $H_2O_2$ and HF was used. In order to investigate the effect of electrochemical etching on the etching depth and reflectance characteristics, the sample was immersed in the aqueous etching solution for 1 min with and without applied cathodic voltages of -1 V and -2 V. As a result, the solar weighted reflectance, i.e., the averaged reflectance with considering solar spectrum (air mass 1.5), could be efficiently reduced for the electrochemically etched Si by applying the cathodic voltage of -2 V, which is expected to be useful for Si solar cell applications.

This article shows the coarsening behavior of nanoparticle multilayers during heat treatments which produce larger metallic nanostructures with varying shapes and sizes on glass slides. Nanoparticle multilayer films are initially constructed via the layer-by-layer self-assembly of small and monodispersed gold and/or palladium nanoparticles with different compositions (gold only, palladium only, or both gold and palladium) and assembly orders (compounding layers of gold layers over palladium layers or vice versa). Upon heating the slides at $600^{\circ}C$, the surface nanoparticles undergo coalescence becoming larger nanostructured metallic films. UV-Vis results show a clear reliance of the layering sequence on the optical properties of these metal films, which demonstrates an importance of the outmost (top) layers in each nanoparticle multilayer films. Topographic surface features show that the heat treatments of nanoparticle multilayer films result in the nucleation of nanoparticles and the formation of metallic cluster structures. The results confirm that different composition and layering sequence of nanoparticle multilayer films clearly affect the coalescence behavior of nanoparticles during heat treatments.

According to advanced nanotechnology in the field of biomedical engineering, many studies of the interaction between topography of surfaces and cellular responses have been focused on nanostructure. In order to investigate this interaction, it is essential to make well-controlled nanostructures. Electron beam lithography (EBL) have been considered the most typical processes to fabricate and control nano-scale patterns. In this work, $TiO_2$ nanowire array was fabricated with hybrid process (top-down and bottom-up processes). Nanodot arrays were patterned on the substrate by EBL process (top-down). In order to control the spacing between nanodots, we optimized the EBL process using Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as an electron beam resist. Metal lift-off was used to transfer the spacing-controlled nanodots as a seed pattern of $TiO_2$ nanowire array. Au or Sn nanodots which play an important role for catalyst using Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) method were patterned on the substrate through the lift-off process. Then, the sample was placed in the tube furnace and heated at the synthesis temperature. After heat treatment, $TiO_2$ nanowire array was fabricated from the nanodots through VLS method (bottom-up). These results of spacing-controlled nanowire arrays will be used to study the interaction between nanostructures and cellular responses in our next steps.
In recent years, matrix-free laser desorption ionization (LDI) for mass spectrometry of thermally labile molecules has been an important research subject in the pursuit of new ionization methods to serve as alternatives to the conventional matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) method. While many recent studies have reported successful LDI of thermally labile molecules from various surfaces, mostly from surfaces with nanostructures, understanding of what drives the LDI process still requires further study. This article briefly reviews the thermal aspects involved in the LDI mechanism, which can be characterized as rapid surface heating. The thermal mechanism was supported by observed LDI and postsource decay (PSD) of peptide ions produced from flat surfaces with special thermal properties including amorphous Si (a-Si) and tungsten silicide ($WSi_x$). In addition, the concept of rapid surface heating further suggests a practical strategy for the preparation of LDI sample plates, which allows us to choose various surface materials including crystalline Si (c-Si) and Au tailorable to specific applications.

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is one of the most important rechargeable battery and portable energy storage for the electric digital devices. In particular, study about the higher energy capacity and longer cycle life is intensively studied because of applications in mobile electronics and electric vehicles. Generally, the LIB's capacity can be improved by replacing anode materials with high capacitance. The graphite, common anode materials, has a good cyclability but shows limitations of capacity (~374 mAh/g). On the contrary, silicon (Si) and germanium(Ge), which is same group elements, are promising candidate for high-performance LIB electrodes because it has a higher theoretical specific capacity. (Si:4200 mAh/g, Ge:1600 mAh/g) However, it is well known that Si volume change by 400% upon full lithiation (lithium insertion into Si), which result in a mechanical pulverization and poor capacity retention during cycling. Therefore, variety of nanostructure group IV elements, including nanoparticles, nanowires, and hollow nanospheres, can be promising solution about the critical issues associated with the large volume change. However, the fundamental research about correlation between the composition and structure for LIB anode is not studied yet. Herein, we successfully synthesized various structure of nanowire such as Si-Ge, Ge-Carbon and Si-graphene core-shell types and analyzed the properties of LIB. Nanowires (NWs) were grown on stainless steel substrates using Au catalyst via VLS (Vapor Liquid Solid) mechanism. And, core-shell NWs were grown by VS (Vapor-Solid) process on the surface of NWs. In order to characterize it, we used FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. We measured battery property of various nanostructures for checking the capacity and cyclability by cell-tester.

ZnO nanowires were synthesized by the thermal evaporation method and their growth mechanisms were confirmed by the characterization of the structural features depending on the growth conditions. The increase of vaporization temperature accelerates the growth rate and morphologies of ZnO nanowires were drastically changed at the temperature over 1000$^{\circ}C$, because of changed $CO/CO_2$ partial pressure. Au particles play their role on growth of ZnO nanowire as catalyst at growth temperature over 700$^{\circ}C$. The synthesized ZnO nanowires exhibit blue emission at 380 nm.
In this study, closely spaced Au nanoparticles which are arranged in nanocluster (heptamer) configurations have been employed to design efficient plasmonic subwavelength devices to function at the telecommunication spectrum (${\lambda}$~1550 nm). Utilizing two kinds of nanoparticles, the optical properties of heptamer clusters composed of Au rod and shell particles that are oriented in triphenylene molecular fashion have been investigated numerically, and the cross-sectional profiles of the scattering and absorption of the optical power have been calculated based on a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Plasmon hybridization theory has been utilized as a theoretical approach to characterize the features and properties of the adjacent and mutual heptamer clusters. Using these given nanostructures, we designed a complex four-branch ($1{\times}4$) Y-shape splitter that is able to work at the near infrared region (NIR). This splitter divides and transmits the magnetic plasmon mode along the mutual heptamers arrays. Besides, as an important and crucial parameter, we studied the impact of arm spacing (offset distance) on the guiding and dividing of the magnetic plasmon resonance propagation and by calculating the ratio of transported power in both nanorod and nanoshell-based structures. Finally, we have presented the optimal structure, that is the four-branch Y-splitter based on shell heptamers which yields the power ratio of 23.9% at each branch, 4.4 ${\mu}m$ decaying length, and 1450 nm offset distance. These results pave the way toward the use of nanoparticles clusters in molecular fashions in designing various efficient devices that are able to be efficient at NIR.

The zinc oxide(ZnO) nanowires were deposited on Si(001) substrates by thermal chemical vapour deposition without any catalysts. SEM data suggested that the grown nanostructures were the well-aligned ZnO single crystals with preferential orientation. Back-gate ZnO nanowire field effect transistors(FET) were successfully fabricated using a photolithography process. The fabricated nanowire FET exhibits good contact between the ZnO nonowire and Au metal electrodes. Based on I-V characteristics it was found out that the ZnO nanowire revealed a characteristic of n-type field effect transistor. The drain current increases with increasing drain voltage, and the slopes of the $I_{ds}-V_{ds}$ curves are dependent on the gate voltage.

Recently, one-dimensional semiconducting nanomaterials have attracted considerable interest for their potential as building blocks for fabricating various nanodevices. Among these semiconducting nanomaterials,, $SnO_2$ nanostructures including nanowires, nanorods, nanobelts, and nanotubes were successfully synthesized and their electrochemical properties were evaluated. Although $SnO_2$ nanowires and nanobelts exhibit fascinating gas sensing characteristics, there are still significant difficulties in using them for device applications. The crucial problem is the alignment of the nanowires. Each nanowire should be attached on each die using arduous e-beam or photolithography, which is quite an undesirable process in terms of mass production in the current semiconductor industry. In this study, a simple process for making sensitive $SnO_2$ nanowire-based gas sensors by using a standard semiconducting fabrication process was studied. The nanowires were aligned in-situ during nanowire synthesis by thermal CVD process and a nanowire network structure between the electrodes was obtained. The $SnO_2$ nanowire network was floated upon the Si substrate by separating an Au catalyst between the electrodes. As the electric current is transported along the networks of the nanowires, not along the surface layer on the substrate, the gas sensitivities could be maximized in this networked and floated structure. By varying the nanowire density and the distance between the electrodes, several types of nanowire network were fabricated. The $NO_2$ gas sensitivity was 30~200 when the $NO_2$ concentration was 5~20ppm. The response time was ca. 30~110 sec.
