  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of mathematical activities with online mathematical contents on children's arithmetic development and attitudes toward mathematical activities. Pre- and post-tests were administered to 62 5-year-old children. Differences of children's arithmetic development level and attitudes toward mathematical activities were found between the experimental group using online mathematical contents and the control group using offline mathematical contents. All findings proved that online mathematical contents were effective and had positive influences on children's arithmetic development and attitudes toward mathematical activities. This supports the proposition that online mathematical contents can provide an important means to the improvement of children's mathematical development and attitudes toward mathematical activities.

For this study, guestionnaires completed by 2-year and 4-year college students (n=426) were analyzed by factor analysis, cluster analysis, X²- test, and ANOVA. The results of this study were as follows: First, the money attitudes were composed of five factors and they were categorized by three clusters: cluster of considering the money as a tool for future safety, a way of approval and filling up emotions, and inclination toward stinginess and distrust. Second, the factors which were associated with money attitudes were academic level, education level of parents, household income, students' own income, and the economic level of their households. Third, in each type of attitudes, the clothing purchase behavior had four steps of decision making: problem recognition, information search, evaluation of alternatives, and the purchase. There were significant differences in the clothing purchase behavior among the money attitude styles.

  • Subjects were 279 parents of 4- and 5-year-old day care children. Statistical techniques were factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. Major findings were that parents with higher levels of education and income showed a higher level of attitudes and coping behavior toward preschoolers' exposure to secondhand smoke. Parents who were smokers had a higher level than non-smokers of knowledge and coping with preschoolers' secondhand smoke. Parents with higher levels of knowledge and more negative attitudes about secondhand smoke were more active in dealing with secondhand smoke. Parents' knowledge and attitudes were significant predictors of their coping behavior with preschoolers' secondhand smoke. Parents' knowledge was more predictive of parents' coping behavior than their attitudes.

  • Attitudes toward target language culture and motivation have been known as important factors in second or foreign language learning. In this study, cadets' attitudes toward the target language community and culture were investigated to find out any relationships with English achievement. Integrative or instrumental motivation in foreign military context was investigated to determine which motivation was more positively related to English proficiency. Cadets' responses were shown highly positive and internally consistent in most cases. Military cadets' attitudes toward American culture were statistically significant and could predict their English achievement. Even though integrative motivation was statistically significant, correlation with English achievement was low. However, instrumental motivation was not significant. This result implies that attitudes toward culture is an important factor in foreign language learning and integrative-instrumental motivation dichotomy might not be enough to explain specific context like cadets' English learning situation at Korea Army Academy at Youngcheon.

  • This study examined the effects of employees' gender role attitudes, job involvement, and family involvement on their work-family conflicts, work-family facilitation, and utilization of family-friendly corporate policies. Data was collected from 377 full-time married workers from 262 large (more than 300 employees) and 100 small (fewer than 300 employees) private sector companies. The questionnaire's measurements were based on recommendations from the literature review. The questionnaire consisted of the gender role attitude scales, job and family involvement scales, work-family conflict and facilitation scales, and questions pertaining to the employee's utilization of family-friendly corporate policies. The SPSS 12.0 statistical package was used to analyze the collected data. The study found that employees showed more or less egalitarian gender role attitudes and that they were more involved in their family than their job. The employees' responses showed a low rate of utilizing family-friendly policies, but employees from large companies reported a higher utilization of family-friendly policies than those from small companies. There were also gender differences in employees' gender role attitudes, work and family involvement, and utilization of policies. Male workers held more traditional gender role attitudes, had higher levels of job involvement, and had higher rates of utilization of policies than female employees. Meanwhile, employees with children exhibited more traditional gender role attitudes and higher rates of utilization of policies than those without children. Finally, serial hierarchical regression analyses revealed that employees' more egalitarian gender role attitudes and higher job and family involvement predict higher work-family facilitation, while their gender role attitudes and job and family involvement have no significant influence on work-family conflicts. Also, employees from large companies with high job involvement will have significantly higher utilization rates of family-friendly corporate policies.

  • Objectives: Adolescent suicide, a major cause of adolescent death, is affected by various factors, including attitudes toward suicide. This study investigated the association between parenting style and adolescents' attitudes toward suicide and the mediating role of attitude toward suicide between parenting style and suicidal ideation. Methods: We surveyed 1,071 adolescents from eight middle schools in Incheon, Korea. The survey included sociodemographic information, attitudes toward suicide, perception of parenting style, depression severity, and suicidality. Results: Students in the authoritarian parenting group had a more permissive attitude toward suicide compared with the democratic and permissive parenting groups. These students considered that suicide is justified in certain situations and that choosing suicide is an individual's right. They also had a negative attitude toward talking about suicide or intervening in others' suicide. This association remained statistically significant after adjusting for the impact of confounding factors that could affect attitudes toward suicide, except for suicidal processes and preparedness to prevent suicide. In the mediation analysis, we observed that some factors of the attitudes toward suicide mediated between authoritarian parenting attitudes and suicidal ideation, namely, suicide as a right, preventability, suicide as normal/common, preparedness to prevent suicide, and resignation. Conclusion: This study revealed the significant impact of parenting style on children's attitudes toward suicide. Educating parents about the appropriate parenting attitudes-sympathetic and rational-can help prevent youth suicide.
