  • This paper aims to suggest the water curtain installation guideline for prevention of fire spread. The water curtain systems play a role in preventing fire spread which is caused by fire flames and radiation heat release from a fire source. The radiation attenuation ratio is affected by the water droplet size, vertical distance from the nozzle and flow rate. This study suggests the water curtain installation guideline as follows : (1) Investigation of a reference store array (2) Calculation of the number of drencher heads (3) Review of the relationship between droplet size and attenuation factor depending on the height of the drencher head (4) Review of a drencher head array and spray overlapping. The reference traditional market in which a fire compartment is installed using a water curtain can be predicted to have a radiation attenuation ratio of 50%.

  • Purpose Because of many advantages, PET-CT Scanners generally use CT Data for attenuation correction. By using CT based attenuation correction, we can get anatomical information, reduce scan time and make more accurate correction of attenuation. However in case metal artifact occurred during CT scan, CT-based attenuation correction can induce artifacts and quantitative errors that can affect the PET images. Therefore this study infers true SUV of metal artifact region from attenuation corrected image count -to- non attenuation corrected image count ratio. Materials and Methods Micro phantom inserted $^{18}F-FDG$ 4mCi was used for phantom test and Biograph mCT S(40) is used for medical test equipment. We generated metal artifact in micro phantom by using metal. Then we acquired both metal artifact region of correction factor and non metal artifact region of correction factor by using attenuation correction image count -to- non attenuation correction image count ratio. In case of clinical image, we reconstructed both attenuation corrected images and non attenuation corrected images of 10 normal patient($66{\pm}15age$) who examined PET-CT scan in SNUH. After that, we standardize several organs of correction factor by using attenuation corrected image count -to- non attenuation corrected count ratio. Then we figured out metal artifact region of correction factor by using metal artifact region of attenuation corrected image count -to- non attenuation corrected count ratio And we compared standard organs correction factor with metal artifact region correction factor. Results according to phantom test results, metal artifact induce overestimation of correction factor so metal artifact region of correction factors are 12% bigger than the non metal artifact region of correction factors. in case of clinical test, correction factor of organs with high CT number(>1000) is $8{\pm}0.5%$, correction factor of organs with CT number similar to soft tissue is $6{\pm}2%$ and correction factor of organs with low CT number(-100>) is $3{\pm}1%$. Also metal artifact correction factors are 20% bigger than soft tissue correction factors which didn't happened metal artifact. Conclusion metal artifact lead to overestimation of attenuation coefficient. because of that, SUV of metal artifact region is overestimated. Thus for more accurate quantitative evaluation, using attenuation correction image count -to-non attenuation correction image count ratio is one of the methods to reduce metal artifact affect.

  • Purpose This study aimed to determine whether the attenuation coefficient (AC) from attenuation imaging (ATI) was correlated with visual US assessment in patients with hepatic steatosis. Moreover, it aimed to assess whether the patient's blood chemistry results and CT attenuation were correlated with AC. Materials and Methods Patients who underwent abdominal US with ATI between April 2018 and December 2018 were included in this study. Patients with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis were excluded. The correlation between AC and other parameters, such as visual US assessment, blood chemistry results, liver attenuation, and liver-to-spleen (L/S) ratio, were analyzed. AC values according to visual US assessment grades were compared using analysis of variance. Results A total of 161 patients were included in this study. The correlation coefficient between US assessment and AC was 0.814 (p < 0.001). The mean AC values for the normal, mild, moderate, and severe grades were 0.56, 0.66, 0.74, and 0.85, respectively (p < 0.001). Alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly correlated with AC (r = 0.317, p < 0.001). The correlation coefficients between liver attenuation and AC and between L/S ratio and AC were -0.702 and -0.626, respectively (p < 0.001). Conclusion Visual US assessment and AC showed a strong positive correlation with the discriminative value between the groups. Computed tomography attenuation and AC showed a strong negative correlation.

  • The stability of the adjcent structures or slopes under blasting is typically evaluated using an empirical vibration attenuation curve or dynamic numerical analysis. To perform a dynamic analysis, it is necessary to determine the blast load and the damping ratio of rock mass. Various empirical methods have been proposed for the blast load. However, a study on representative values of damping ratio of a rock mass has not yet been performed. Therefore, the damping ratio was either ignored or selected without a clear basis in performing a blast analysis. Selection of the dampring ratio for the rock mass is very difficult because the vibration propagation is influenced by the layout and properties of the rock joints. Besides, the vibration induced by blasting is propagated spherically, whereas plane waves are generated by an earthquake. Since the geometrical spreading causes additional attenuation, the damping ratio should be adjusted in the case of a 2D plane strain analysis. In this study, we proposed equivalent damping ratios for use in continuum 2D plane strain analyses. To this end, we performed 2D dynamic analyses for a wide range of rock stiffness and investigated the characteristics of blast vibration propagation. Based on numerical simulations, a correlation between the attenuation equation, shear wave velocity, and equivalent damping ratio of rock mass is presented. This novel approach is the first attempt to select the damping ratio from an attenuation relationship. The proposed chart is easy to be used and can be applied in practice.

  • This paper predicts and measures the C/N ratio of a beacon signal transmitted from geostationary orbit satellite KorSat 5A ($113^{\circ}E$) at a ground station located in Kimpo. Based on the ground stations, we compared the rain attenuation of the zone K of ITU-R and the rain attenuation which analyzed the domestic weather information. In ITU-R, the Korean rainfall characteristics are classified into zone K, but forecasting the rainfall intensity and attenuation of three adjacent cities based on the cumulative rainfall data per minute from 2013 to 2017. The calculation of rainfall path and attenuation is based on ITU-R recommendations. The change of the C/N according to the rainfall amount was confirmed through the 2 week satellite beacon signal C/N measurement. The predicted critical C/N was decreased to 12 dB at $A_{0.3}$. During the experiment, it was confirmed that it decreased up to 8 dB according to the concentrated rainfall.

  • Recent seismic surveys have shown that the presence of methane hydrate (MH) in sediments has significant influence on seismic attenuation. I have used vertical seismic profile (VSP) data from a Nankai Trough exploratory well, offshore Tokai in central Japan, to estimate compressional attenuation in MH-bearing sediments at seismic frequencies of 30-110 Hz. The use of two different measurement methods (spectral ratio and centroid frequency shift methods) provides an opportunity to validate the attenuation measurements. The sensitivity of attenuation analyses to different depth intervals, borehole irregularities, and different frequency ranges was also examined to validate the stability of attenuation estimation. I found no significant compressional attenuation in MH-bearing sediments at seismic frequencies. Macroscopically, the peaks of highest attenuation in the seismic frequency range correspond to low-saturation gas zones. In contrast, high compressional attenuation zones in the sonic frequency range (10-20 kHz) are associated with the presence of methane hydrates at the same well locations. Thus, this study demonstrated the frequency-dependence of attenuation in MH-bearing sediments; MH-bearing sediments cause attenuation in the sonic frequency range rather than the seismic frequency range As a possible reason why seismic frequencies in the 30-110 Hz range were not affected in MH-bearing sediments, I point out the effect of thin layering of MH-bearing zones.

  • Recently, extending the local broadcasting and increasing lots of informations, the low-loss communication cable is required in proportion as frequency. The reason of transportation loss causes to using the high frequencies like hundreds of MHz or decades of GHz. For the low transportation loss, it is required the developing-technology of foaming and the high foamed insulator with the dielectric ratio of the nearest to 1. Therefore, there is the purpose of developing the insulating materials for the low dielectric ratio. Also it is important to measure the attenuation, which is one of the important parameters, as the evaluation of transportation characteristic with frequency in the communication cable. In this paper, the result showed that the dielectric ratio(1.4) of the nearest to 1 and low attenuation with high frequency were very related to the transportation and reflection characteristics such as propagation velocity(82.27%), delay time and voltage standing wave ratio(VSWR).

  • The silencers are used to attenuate noise generated by the exhaust fan for industrial processes. The types of silencers applied in this study are absorptive duct silencer, expansion chamber, absorptive chamber and resonator. This study was carried out to verify the attenuation by the various silencers and elements. As a result, the difference of attenuation between the calculation and the measurement was about 1-7㏈. The attenuation by absorptive duct silencer and absorptive chamber was negligible at frequencies below 250Hz. The expansion chamber should be used for low frequency applications where the absorptive duct silencer was Ineffective. The attenuation by resonator may be realised when the ratio of frequency to resonant frequency approaches 1.

  • Underwater images carry information that is useful in the fields of aquaculture, underwater military security, navigation, transportation, and so on. In this research, we transmitted an underwater image through various underwater mediums in the presence of underwater turbulence and beam attenuation effects using a high-speed visible optical carrier signal. The optical beam undergoes scintillation because of the turbulence and attenuation effects; therefore, distorted images were observed at the receiver end. To understand the behavior of the communication media, we obtained the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system with respect to the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Also, the structural similarity index (SSI) and peak SNR (PSNR) metrics of the received image were evaluated. Based on the received images, we employed suitable nonlinear filters to recover the distorted images and enhance them further. The BER, SSI, and PSNR metrics of the specific nonlinear filters were also evaluated and compared with the unfiltered metrics. These metrics were evaluated using the on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying modulation techniques for the 50-m and 100-m links for beam attenuation resulting from pure seawater, clear ocean water, and coastal ocean water mediums.
