Variation of ANN Model's Predictive Performance Concerning Short-term (<24 hrs) $SO_2$ Concentrations with Prediction Lagging Time

  • In this study, neural network models (NNMs) were examined as alternatives to dispersion models in predicting the short-term $SO_2$ concentrations in a coastal area because the performances of dispersion models in coastal areas have been found to be unsatisfactory. The NNMs were constructed for various combinations of averaging time and prediction time in advance by using the historical data of meteorological parameters and $SO_2$ concentrations in 2002 in the coastal area of Boryeung, Korea. The NNMs were able to make much more accurate predictions of 1 hr $SO_2$ concentrations at ground level in the morning in coastal area than the atmospheric dispersion models such as fumigation models, ADMS3 and ISCST3 for identical conditions of atmospheric stability, area, and weather. Even when predictions of 24-h $SO_2$ concentrations were made 24 hours in advance, the predictions and measurements were in good accordance(correlation coefficient=0.65 for n=216). This accordance level could be improved by appropriate expansion of training parameters. Thus it may be concluded that the NNMs can be successfully used to predict short-term ground level concentrations averaged over time less than 24 hours even in complex terrain. The prediction performance of ANN models tends to improve as the prediction lagging time approaches the concentration averaging time, but to become worse as the lagging time departs from the averaging time.

Characteristic of Water-soluble Components of PM10 at Taean and Gangneung Sites in Summer Season (태안과 강릉지역 여름철 PM10의 수용성 성분 특성)

  • [ $PM_{10}$ ]measurements were made at two coastal sites, i.e., Taean and Gangneung, for summer to examine the characterization of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and inorganic ionic species, and to investigate their difference between the sites. The fractions of three major inorganic water-soluble components ($NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, and $NH_4^+$) at Taean and Gangneung sites were 30.6% (16.2~62.0%) and 25.6% (13.0~52.5%) of the $PM_{10}$, respectively. $SO_4^{2-}$ is the most dominant species of water-soluble ions at both sites, accounting for up to 20.5% (9.1~44.9%) and 16.3% (5.5~34.2%) of their respective PM10 mass concentrations. Using the paired T-test, $PM_{10}$ (p<0.01), $NO_3^-$ (p<0.05), $SO_4^{2-}$ (p<0.01), $NH_4^+$ (p<0.001), and WSOC (p<0.05) concentrations exhibited strong fluctuations on a daily basis between Taean and Gangneung sites. Relationship between the concentrations of $SO_x$ ($SO_4^{2-}+SO_2$) and CO indicates that the slopes of $SO_x$ /CO were 0.007 and 0.019 in the Taean and Gangneung sites, respectively. The smaller $SO_x$/CO slope in the Taean site could be related to the aged air with wet scavenging of $SO_x$ during transport. The correlation between the concentrations of CO and WSOC suggests that WSOC observed in the Gangneung ($R^2$=0.82) be transported from combustion-related sources, while the WSOC at the Taean site could be formed through atmospheric processing of primary volatile organic species during transport.

  • Sandy dust phenomena was observed from April 19 to 23, 1988 in Seoul. During this period it rained and the precipitation was collected to investigate the rain chemistry. This study was carried out to analyzed the chemical composition of precipitation by the measurements of conditivity, cations $(H^+, NH_4^+, K^+, Na^+, Ca^{2+}, MG^{2+})$, and anions $(SO_4^{2-}, NO_3^-, Cl^-, F^-, Br^-)$ which are believed to be the major ions playing an important role in the acidity of rain water. During the period of sandy dust phenomena the range of pH value and conductivity concentration of rainwater were 6.0-6.7, 172-254 $\mu \mho/cm$. The anions and cations concentrations increased and the orders of these concentrations were $SO_4^{2-} > Cl^- > NO_3^- > Na^+ > Ca^{2+} > NH_4^+ > Mg^{2+}$. THe principal chemical compounds of rainwater were estimated at $(NH_4)_2 SO_4, CaSO_4, NaCl, and MgCl_2$.

  • For removing $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ from the flue gases emitted from stationary sources, $V_2O_5-MoO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts were prepared by the conventional impregnation method (aqueous solution) and a sort of surface fixation method(nonaqueous solution) as reported excellent reproducibility catalysts. And these catalysts observed their catalytic activities as well as their surface properties. V-Mo-O oxide, prepared from nonaqueous solution of $VOCl_3$ and $Mo(CO)_6$ and aqeous solution method, was supported as amorphous state by XRD and SEM measurements. The infrared spectra of fresh and used catalysts showed that in used catalysts, V=O bands decreased and new bands of vanadium oxysulfate bands were very sensitive. So the catalysts prepared from nonaqueous solution may bring about the high activity. Results from catalytic activity measurements at 350$^\circ$C, in the presence of $SO_2, NO$ conversion was more increased than in absence of $SO_2$. As the $MoO_3$ was added to $V_2O_5/TiO_2 system, SO_2$ conversion increased. It found that from the results, $V_2O-5-MoO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts prepared from an nonaqueous solution may bring about the high activity for both the reaction of NO and $SO_2$ removal.

Characteristics of Chemical Species in $PM_{205}$ during the Winter in Kangwha (강화도 지역에서 겨울철 $PM_{205}$의 화학적 성분 특성)

  • Chemical compositions of air pollutants with fine particles (<2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, PB2.5) were evaluated at background site. Kangwha. in Korea during the winter season. The data set was obtained for seventeed days with 24-hour sampling from December 11 to 16, 1996 and from January 9 to 1997. The chemical species have been measured {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}}, {{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}}, {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}}}. OC and EC in the particulate phase, NH3 HNO3, HCl and SO2 in the gas phase using the three stage filter pack method. Mean concentration ($\mu\textrm{g}$/m3) of this study were : 35.42 for PM2.5 8.78 for organic carbon (OC) 7.25 for nss {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}}, 4.94 for {{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}}, 3.58 for {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}}} and 1.48 for elemental carbon (EC) respectively. Contributive rates of major particulate components in PM2.5 were OC (25%) nss- {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}}(20%) ,{{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}}(14%) {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}}}(10%) and EC (4%) respectively and these components could be accounted for 73% of PM2.5 mass. Reactive forms of {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}}} were considered as NH4HO3 and NH4{{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}} during the sampling periods. {{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}}/({{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}} + HNO3) and {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}}/({{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}} + SO2) were calculated 0.8 and 0.9 respectively. Most of these compounds might be formed in partiiculate phase in the air. Correlation coefficient between OC and EC was 0.866 which might have the same sources during the sampling periods,.

Behaviors of Inorganic Components in Atmospheric Aerosols on the Yellow Sand Phenomena (황사현상시 대기에어로졸 중 무기물질의 동태)

  • The atmospheric aerosol samples during the Yellow Sand Phenomena in April 1993 were analyzed, and they were compared with those during the normal time. The conclusions are as follows: 1) TSP concentrations in the case of Yellow Sand Phenomena appeared to be 2.2times higher than those of normal conditions. 2) The concentration of aerosols; Inorganic components of soil-originated elements (Ca, Fe, Mn, Mg, K) during the Yellow Sand Phenomena were measured to be 1.9-2.1times higher than those during normal time. 3) During the Yellow Sand Phenomena the EF values of soil-originated metal contents except for elements Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn in the atmospheric aerosol were close to unity. 4) The concentrations of $Ca^{2+}, SO_4^{2-}, F^-$ in water soluble ionic components were higher than those during the normal time. 5) Washout factor by rain fall during the Yellow Sand Phenomena were estimated to 1268. 6) During the Yellow Sand Phenomina average deposition was 37.8ton/$km^2$.

The Influences of Sea Breeze on Air Pollution Concentration in Pusan, Korea (해풍이 부산 지역의 대기 오염 농도에 미치는 영향)

  • Air pollution characteristics and the influence of sea breeze on air pollution concentration were studied using the data measured at 7 air quality continuous monitoring stations in Pusan, 1993. Maximum air pollution concentration in Pusan was Gamjeondong for $SO_2$, Sinpyeongdong for TSP, Daeyeondong for $O_3, Kwangbokdong for $NO_2$, Beomcheondong for CO and all substances were under annual ambient air quality standards. Increased rate of concentration for sea breeze was 24.4% for 502, 31.5% for TSP, 8.0% fort $O_3, 26.7% for $NO_2$, 15.7% for CO. Frequencies distribution of $SO_2$, TSP, $O_3$, $NO_2$, and CO concentration for sea breeze moved toward high concentration class.

  • The adsorption of various atmospheric harmful gases (COx, NOx, SOx) on graphene-like Germanene 2D sheet was theoretically investigated using density functional theory(DFT) method. The structures were fully optimized at the B3LYP/cc-pvDZ and CAM-B3LYP/cc-pvDZ levels of theory and confirmed to be a local minimum by the calculation of the harmonic vibrational frequencies. The adsorptions of gases on the Germanene sheet were predicted to be a physisorption process for CO, CO2, NO, and SO2 gases but to be a chemisorption process for NO2, SO, and SO2 gases.

Variation Characteristics of TSP Ionic Compositions by Meteorological Phenomena in Jeju Island (기상현상에 따른 제주지역 TSP의 이온조성 변화 특성)

  • The ionic compositions were analyzed from the TSP samples collected at Gosan site in Jeju Island between 2000 and 2008, in order to examine the characteristics of atmospheric aerosols in accordance with the meteorological conditions. For the Asian Dust influence on the ionic compositions, the concentration ratios of $NH_4{^+}$, nss-${SO_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $K^+$ were about 1.2~2.3 during Asian Dust over Non-Asian Dust periods, noticeably that of nss-$Ca^{2+}$ was 6.8. Meanwhile the concentrations of nss-${SO_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $NH_4{^+}$ have increased as 1.8~4.4 times during the haze event periods, and 1.0~1.6 times during the fog and mist events. The ion balance has resulted that the anionic concentrations are relatively lower than the cationic concentrations, and the discrepancy appears more decidedly as a strong Asian Dust effect. The ammonium ion balance has shown that it exists as a mixture of $NH_4HSO_4$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. The concentration ratios of nss-${SO_4}^{2-}/NO_3{^-}$ for Asian Dust, haze, fog-mist, and non-event periods were respectively 1.8, 5.9, 4.6, and 2.9, which were higher values compared to those in urban areas of China as well as other domestic regions. Especially, the high ratios of sulfur oxides could be presumed by the fact that the longrange transport of air pollutants from Asia continent might affect the atmospheric aerosols of Jeju Island.
