  • Purpose - This paper examines whether product market competition in distribution and service industries is related to audit quality. This paper investigates, specifically, the relationship in distribution and service industries by using Herfindahl-Hirschman Index and audit quality measured by audit fee and audit hour. Research design, data, and methodology - Using 1,011 firm-year observations of listed companies from 2002 to 2016 in distribution and service industries, this study examines whether product market competition in distribution and service industries is related to audit quality. Results - This study finds that market competition in distribution and service industries is negatively related to audit quality and this negative relation is pronounced for the firms with high outside director groups. Further analysis suggests that the relationship between market competition and audit hours is no longer significant. Conclusions - This study extended the existing scope of the audit quality study by systematically analyzing the impact of industrial-level characteristics (i.e. market competition) in the distribution service industries on audit quality. This study, in other words, suggests the regulatory body consider the industrial-level characteristics of each industry in order to enhance audit quality.

  • This paper evaluates the role of fund distributors and the appropriateness of sales fees in funds by the empirical analysis of Korean equity funds. The empirical results are summarized as follows. First, this paper shows that the funds with higher sales fees do not have better performance. Rather, the higher sales fees cause the returns of funds to decrease in Korean equity funds. Second, it is not confirmed that both banks and securities firms, as fund distributors, contribute to the better performance of funds. Especially, the banks gave more negative influence on the performance of funds by imposing higher sales fees in funds than the securities firms. The empirical results suggest that the sales fees of funds are unduly imposed in comparison to the function of fund distributors and therefore, the structure of fund fees should be improved for the benefit of fund investors.

  • The paper investigates the factors that affect the demand for a voluntary audit of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. A structured questionnaire survey of 284 SMEs was employed, preceded by in-depth interviews with auditors and SMEs' managers. The research used logistic regression estimator to address econometric issues and to improve the accuracy of the regression coefficients. The results show that the degree of director's view on voluntary audit, related stakeholder, degree of recommendation, and firm size have a statistically significant positive effect on audit decisions of SMEs while degree of audit fee has a statistically significant negative effect, and degree of subjective norm does not affect. This indicated that SMEs are more likely to have an external audit if they have some typical features: it is becoming larger in terms of size, and the directors consider that the audit has a relative benefit outweighing its cost. The research results suggested that Vietnam Government should make a statutory audit of SMEs' financial statements rather than make it an option for SMEs. The auditing firms were also recommended to actively take their audit services to SMEs rather than waiting for the SMEs' managers to contact them for their services.

  • This study examines the relationship between the effectiveness of an audit committee and the amount of audit fees. The sample consists of 130 manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2016-2017. Data are obtained from the IDX and company's annual reports. The effectiveness of an audit committee is measured by independent audit committee size, frequency of audit committee meetings, and expertise of the audit committee. Results show first that the size of the independent audit committee has a positive effect on audit fees. This finding suggests that an increase in the number of independent audit committee members produces a higher quality of reporting, and so they tend to choose a reputable public accountant. Second, the frequency of its meetings has positive effects on audit fees. It suggests that the more effective the supervision of the committee to improve audit quality, the higher the audit fees to be paid. However, this study fails to provide evidence that the expertise of the audit committee affects audit fees. The result of this study suggests that the audit committee tends to adopt the demand approach based on the reputation of the public accounting firm accountant firm in determining the amount of audit fees.

  • The purpose of this research is to examines the effect of the audit offer and simultaneous tax services from auditors on the firm value of clients. To test this hypothesis, we used the samples of the auditors' tax services selected from firms listed on the securities markets of Korea. We use the methodology of regression analysis. The major findings are as follows. First, TAX_SER has a positive relationship with the firm value. The knowledge and experience resulting from the offer of audit services are applied to the process of offering tax services to enhance the professionalism of audit and tax services. Second, the analysis was performed to determine if the type of tax services from auditors and the type of listed markets make any difference in the effect of TAX_SER1 on TQ; the study has revealed that only tax adjustment has a positive effect on TQ in the type of tax services. Depending on the type of listed markets, TAX_SER1 has been found to have a differential effect on the firm value. The results show that investors might decide to invest in those firms where the auditor could increase the firm value through audit and tax services.

The results of this study can be used as basis data for valuing community gardens.

  • The social networking service (SNS) is free, but the data usage fee paid to the telecommunications company and the member's information must be provided directly or indirectly. In addition, while SNS' specifications for transmitting and receiving devices such as smart-phones and PCs are increasing day by day, using universal transmission protocols in special environments such as contaminated areas or semiconductor manufacturing plants where work instructions are mainly made using short messages is not easy. It is not free and has a problem of weak security. This paper verified the practicality through the operation test by implementing IMCP, a low-power, low-cost message transmission protocol that aims to be wearable in special environments such as risk, pollution, and clean zone based on ATmega128.
