  • The energy and momentum coefficients ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ are measures of homogenerity of velocity distribution in a chanel section. They indicate the effect of energy and momentum transport. However, in most practical applications, they are assumed to be unity due to the difficulty in estimating them. Efforts have been made in this study to estimate these coefficients and to develop equations for practical applications. The Prandtl-von Karman logarithmic equation as being used today has limitations and far-reaching assumptions. Therefore, this paper uses Chiu's velocity distribution equation which seems to be capable of serving as such an alternative, to estimate the velocity distribution and the energy and momentum coefficients, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ results are compared with those computed by other existing equations. For practical applications, this paper also uses Chiu's equation along with the Mannig's equation to calculate ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ without velocity data

  • The reflection coefficients of monochromatic waves propagating over a shelf with varying dimensions are theoretically calculated. The diffraction of waves by an abrupt depth change is formulated by the eigenfunction expansion method. Not only propagating mode but also evanescent modes are considered in formulation. The role of evanescent modes in reflection coefficients is investigated in detail. Water waves are obliquely as well as normally incident to the region. The obtained reflection coefficients are verified by checking conservation of wave energy.

  • Aluminium titanate (Al₂TiO5) with an excellent thermal shock resistant and a low the expansion coefficient was obtained by solid solution with MgO, SiO₂, and ZrO₂ in the Al₂TiO5 lattice or in the grain boundary solution through electrofusion in an arc furnace. However, these materials have low mechanical strength due to the presence of microcracks developed by a large difference in thermal expansion coefficients along crystallographic axes. Pure Al₂TiO5 tends to decompose into α-Al₂O₃ and TiO₂-rutile in the temperature range of 750-1300℃ that rendered it apparently useless for industrial applications. Several thermal shock tests were performed: Long therm thermal annealing test at 1100℃ for 100h; and water quenching from 950 to room temperature (RT). Cyclic thermal expansion coefficients up to 1500℃ before and after decomposition tests was also measured using a dilatometer, changes in the microstructure, thermal expansion coefficients, Young's modulus and strengths were determined. The role of microcracks in relation to thermal shock resistance and thermal expansion coefficient is discussed.

  • The reflection coefficients of monochromatic water waves over various shear currents flowing on a constant topography are estimated analytically in this study. The region of varying shear currents is represented by a finite number of tiny steps with a uniform depth topography. The proper numbers of steps and evanescent modes needed for the analysis are proposed by a series of convergence tests. The characteristics of reflection coefficients for various shear currents conditions are also examined.

  • In this study, reflection of water waves over a train of rectangular submerged breakwaters is experimentally investigated. Measured reflection coefficients of regular waves are compared with predicted coefficients obtained from the eigenfunction expansion method. Although measured coefficients are slightly smaller than predicted ones, the overall agreement is very good.

  • Elastic critical loads of sinusoidally tapered bars with simply supported ends are determined by finite element method. The parameters considered in the analysis are taper parameter (=a) and section property parameter (=m). The analysis result for the special case of porismatic bar (a=0) shows good agreement with the existing value. The changes of the critical load coefficients are expressed by an algebraic equation. The coefficients appearing in the equations are determined by regression technique. The critical loads coefficients estimated by the proposed equations reveal little errors when they are compared with those determined by finite element method.

  • The purpose of this study was to validate the KMBI(Korean Maternal Behavior Inventory). Subjects were 1179 mothers of 4th-6th graders in the elementary schools from 5 small and medium cities and 5 urban cities in Korea. Pearson's γ, Cronbach's α, Cramer'sν, one-way ANOVA were conducted for the statistical analyses. The major findings were as follows. 1. The reliability coefficient of the scale (α) were ranged 0.62-0.79 and 0.70-0.82. 2. The discriminant coefficients(ν)of the item were ranged 0.40-0.83. 3. By the analysis of multitrait-multimethod matrix, convergent validity coefficients(γ) were ranged 0.28-0.66: and discriminant validity coefficients(γ) were ranged 0.28-0.66. 4. Significant sex differences were found in the scores of Affection, Overprotection, Achievement, and Achieve Involvement: significant SES differences were found in the scores of Reasoning Guidance, Affection, Overprotection, Achievement, & Active Involvement: and significant region differences were found in the scores of Authoritarian Control and Achievement.

  • In this study, a finite element model is employed to simulate the diffraction of waves caused by a change of water depths. The model is firstly applied to the estimation of reflection coefficients of monochromatic waves over a sinusoidally varying topography. Predicted coefficients are compared with those of the eigenfunction expansion method and laboratory measurements. A good agreement is observed. The model is then used to investigate effects of heights of bottom topography and number of ripples on variation of reflection coefficients of monocromatic water waves.
