갯닦기 전후 제주도 인공어초의 해조상 및 수심별 감태의 생장양상 (Marine Algal Assemblages on Artifical Reefs in Jeju-do Before and After Rocky Cleaning and the Growth Pattern of Ecklonia cava with Water Depth)

  • Marine algal assemblages on the artificial reefs at three stations (Haengwon, Geumneung, Pyoseon in Jeju-do) and the growth pattern of Ecklonia cava with water depth were studied before and after rocky cleaning. Nine algal species occurred at three artificial reefs before rocky cleaning in July 2012, however, 19 algal species were found at three artificial reefs after rocky cleaning in July 2013. In particular, 13 of 19 species in 2013 were replaced by different species which were not found in July 2012. Algal biomass rapidly increased in July 2013 after rocky cleaning. The nMDS plot based on the presence and absence data of macro-algal assemblages on the artificial reefs showed that the species compositions between artificial reefs were similar to each other before rocky cleaning operations in July of 2012. However, after rocky cleaning, the species composition of macro-algal assemblages in Haengwon region was similar to that in Pyoseon region while that in Geumneung region was different to those in Haengwon and Pyseon regions in July 2013. It is needed to clarify the suitable water depth for transplantation of perennial Phaeophyta E. cava. According to the data on seasonal changes in total length, total weight, blade length, blade width, blade weight of E. cava, it began to grow rapidly from April and reached to the maximum value in June, and then degeneration of the blade occurred in July and continued to early August. Although the total length of E. cava at 10m water depth was larger than those at 5 m and 15 m water depths, there was no significant difference statistically among water depths by ANOVA test. However, in the values of total weight, blade length, blade width, and blade weight, the growth patterns at 5 m water depth were larger than those at 10 m and 15 m. Thus, it is assumed that the most suitable water depth for transplantation and its maximum growth and effective release of zoospores of E. cava will be 7~10 m water depth.

드레이크 해협 남부 코어퇴적물에서 산출된 제 4기 규조 화석 연구 (Quaternary Diatom Assemblages from Sediment Core GC 98-06 in the Southern Drake Passage, Antarctica)

  • 남극 드레이크해협 남부에서 채취한 코아퇴적물(GC 98-06)로부터 32개의 시료를 얻어 고생물학적으로 연구한 결과 총 23속 64종의 규조 미화석이 감정되었다. 산출된 규조 미화석의 군집 조성 중 Actinocyclus actinochilus, Coscinodiscus asteromphalus, Eucampia antarctica, Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Thalassiosira lentiginosa, T. ritscheri와 T. anguste-lineata 등이 우점종으로 전체 군집의 73%를 차지한다. 공해환경을 지시해 주는 종들이 Bransfield Strait Water에 의해 유입된 해빙종들에 비해서 다량 산출되며, 제 4기 지시종과 제 3기의 마이오세와 플라이오세를 지시해주는 종들이 혼합되어 산출되는 것은, 퇴적물의 퇴적 당시 고환경이 주로 남극 순환수에 의해 운반된 남극저층수(Circumpolar deep water)에 의해 영향을 받아서 주변의 고기 퇴적물로부터 규조 화석들이 재이동 되었음을 의미한다.

여자만 코어 퇴적물에서 나타나는 저서성 유공충 군집 변화: 홀로세 후기 해수면 변화 의의 (Vertical Variations of Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages in Core Sediments on Yeoja Bay, Southern Coast of Korea: Implications for Late Holocene Sea-Level Change)

  • 남해 여자만에서 홀로세 후기 해수면 변화에 상응하는 저서성 유공충 변화를 알아보기 위하여 4개의 주상시료를 채취하고, 입도분석, 유공충 종 분류 및 군집 설정, 통계 분석을 실시하였다. 주상시료의 구성퇴적물은 주로 세립질의 실트와 점토로 구성된다. 저서성 유공충은 Core YC-1에서 16속 27종, YC-2에서는 21속 30종, YC-3에서는 29속 50종 그리고 Core YC-4에서는 29속 52종이 분류되었다. 집괴분석 결과 Core YC-1과 YC-2의 Group 1은 A. beccarii 군집이 대표군집으로서 만 상부 퇴적환경, Core YC-3과 YC-4의 Group 2는 E. clavatum-A. beccarii 군집이 대표군집으로서 외해수의 영향을 상대적으로 많이 받는 하부 내만 환경 하에서 퇴적된 것을 지시하고 있다. 종 구성 분석 결과, 하부로부터 상부로 향하여 A. beccarii의 산출빈도는 점점 감소하였고, E. clavatum과 P.F./T.F.의 산출빈도는 점점 증가하였다. 저서성 유공충과 부유성 유공충에서 나타난 이러한 변화 형태는 여자만내에서 홀로세 후기 해수면 상승을 반영하고 있는 것으로 생각된다.

서해 경기 내만해역 조간대, 조하대의 저서동물군집 (Faunal Assemblages of Benthic Macrofauna in the Inter- and Subtidal Region of the Inner Kyeonggi Bay, West Coast of Korea)

  • 1987년과 1988년의 2년에 걸쳐 경기만의 저서동물 군집의 특성을 조사하였다. 총 87종의 저서동물이 채집되었으며, 이들의 평균 서식밀도는 550개체/$m^2$에 달하였다. 주요 동물군은 다모류, 연체동물, 갑각류 등이며, 이들은 총 출현개체수 중 각각 64.7, 17.4, 15.2%를 차지하였다. 경기만의 주요 저서종은 Tharyx sp.(10.9%), Mactra veneriformis(10.5%), Mediomastus sp.(8.6%) 그리고 Glycinde sp.(8.0%)등이었다. 이 중 조간대 지역의 대표적인 종은 Mactra veneriformis, Hinia festiva 그리고 Nephtys californiensis 등이었고, 반면 조하대의 수로지역에서는 Tharyx sp., Mediomastus sp., Sternaspis scutata 그리고 Nephtys polybranchia 등이 주요 종으로 나타났다. 조사지역은 종 조성에 근거하여 조간대에 2개, 조하대의 수로지역에 2개 등 총 4개의 정점군으로 대별되었다. 각 정점군에는 특징적인 저서동물 군집이 분포하는데, 조간대 지역에는 Maxtra-Hinia 군집과 Aricidea-Haploscoloplos 군집, 수로지역에는 Harpiniopsis-Urothoe 군집과 Mediomastus-Sternaspis 군집 등이다. 이중 Mediomastus-Sternaspis 군집에서 출현 종수와 서식밀도가 가장 높게 나타났으며, 종 다양성 및 균등도 지수도 같은 경향을 보였다. Harpiniopsis-Urothoe 군집은 출현 종수 및 서식밀도가 가장 빈약하며, 또한 우점도 지수가 가장 높게 나타났다. 반면 조간대에 위치하는 2개의 군집에서는 모든 생물학적인 지표가 중간 정도의 값을 보였다. 강화도와 영종도 사이의 북부 수로지역에서 출현 종수 및 서식밀도가 특히 높게 나타나는 것은 퇴적물내 자갈과 진흙이 혼재하는 이질적인 퇴적환경과 근접한 한강 및 인천공업단지로부터의 유기물 유입 때문인 것으로 보인다.

지도 도석광상에 대한 광물학적 및 지구화학적 연구 (Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Jido kaolin deposits)

  • Jido kaolin deposits developed in the rhyolitic tuff of Cretaceous are located in the western part of Sinan-gun, Jeonranam-do. Jido kaolin deposits is predominantly composed of pyrophyllite, kaolinite and illite. On the basis of mineral assemblage Jido kaolin deposits can be divided into three alteraion zone from the center of alteration to the margin; kaolinite, kaolinite-pyrophyillite and pyrophyillite zones. Discriminant analysis show that $Al_2O_3$, $K_2O$, $Na_2O$, CaO of major elements are discriminant elements classifying kaolinite, kaolinite-pyrophyllite and pyrophyllite zones, while in case of trace elements Cr, Ni, Sc, Zn, and Zr are discriminant elements. Kaolin deposits has been formed by the hydrothermal alterations of the volcano rocks such as rhyolitic tuff and lapilli tuff, in late cretaceous. On the basis of the results of X-ray diffraction analysis, the deposits can be classified into three types of minerals assemblages; kaolinite, kaolinite-pyrophyllite and pyrophyllite zones. All the assemblages contain quartz and muscovite, but the kaolinite zone contains kaolinite, illite and chlorite, the kaolinite-pyrophyllite zone contains kaolinite, pyrophyllite and the pyrophyllite zone contains illite and pyrite.

Species diversity of the old genus Navicula Bory (Bacillariophyta) on intertidal sand-flats in the Nakdong River estuary, Korea

  • Remarkable diversity of diatom taxa occurs in intertidal sand-flats of the Nakdong River estuary, one of the most dynamic and productive ecosystem in Korea. Benthic diatoms were collected from the sandy sediments to clarify the taxonomic accounts and distribution of the old genus Navicula, i.e., the naviculoid flora. Total 92 taxa belonging to Navicula sensu stricto and 22 genera separated from Navicula sensu lato are reported with brief descriptions and micrographs, and many species remain unidentified. The genera are ranked by the number of diatom species: Navicula of 33 species and varieties, Fallacia of 17 species, Placoneis of five species, Fogedia and Parlibellus of four species, Austariella, Hippodonta and Petroneis of three species, Cosmioneis, Diadesmis, Luticola, Moreneis and Sellaphora of two species and variety, Berkeleya, Chamaepinnularia, Cocconeiopsis, Diademoides, Dickieia, Eolimna, Geissleria, Haslea, Lyrella and Mayamaea of one species. Through 32 samplings of the 12 areas, the important species were identified Navicula perminuta, N. gregaria, N. torneensis, Fallacia cunoniae, F. litoricola, F. subforcipata, F. tenera. The naviculoid diatoms constitute an average of 27% (range: minimum to maximum, 5-75%), of the benthic diatom assemblages. The diatom assemblages are characterized by the colonizing of a few dominant or frequent species and many occasional or rare species. The dominant species were observed to fluctuate with sampling site and time. Among the reported naviculoid diatoms, 46 taxa are newly reported in Korea.

Species-specific biomass drives macroalgal benthic primary production on temperate rocky reefs

  • Temperate rocky reefs dominated by the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, support diverse assemblages of benthic macroalgae that provide a suite of ecosystem services, including high rates of primary production in aquatic ecosystems. These forests and the benthic macroalgae that inhabit them are facing both short-term losses and long-term declines throughout much of their range in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Here, we quantified patterns of benthic macroalgal biomass and irradiance on rocky reefs that had intact kelp forests and nearby reefs where the benthic macroalgae had been lost due to deforestation at three sites along the California, USA and Baja California, MEX coasts during the springs and summers of 2017 and 2018. We then modeled how the loss of macroalgae from these reefs impacted net benthic productivity using species-specific, mass-dependent rates of photosynthesis and respiration that we measured in the laboratory. Our results show that the macroalgal assemblages at these sites were dominated by a few species of stipitate kelps and fleshy red algae whose relative abundances were spatially and temporally variable, and which exhibited variable rates of photosynthesis and respiration. Together, our model estimates that the dominant macroalgae on these reefs contribute 15 to 4,300 mg C m-2 d-1 to net benthic primary production, and that this is driven primarily by a few dominant taxa that have large biomasses and high rates of photosynthesis and / or respiration. Consequently, we propose that the loss of these macroalgae results in the loss of an important contribution to primary production and overall ecosystem function.

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia and the Relationship between Protozoa and Water Quality Indicators in Swimming Pools

  • A total of 60 samples were collected from 35 swimming pools in Beijing, China, and the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia were investigated. The results showed that 16.7% and 15.0% of samples were positive for Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cysts, respectively, with a mean concentration of 0.30 oocysts/10 L and 0.27 cysts/10 L. The oocysts and cysts were found to have higher rates of occurrence in August than in May. Genotyping confirmed the presence of Cryptosporidium hominis, C. parvum, and Giardia assemblages A and B, all of which were associated with human infections. The predominant species/assemblages were C. hominis and Giardia assemblage A. Analyses of the relationships between parasite oocysts/cysts, indicator bacteria, and physical-chemical parameters revealed that there was no correlation between 2 parasites and fecal bacterial indicators, whilst there was a significant correlation between protozoa and urea concentration, which indicates that urea concentration rather than fecal bacterial indicators might be an appropriate index for chlorine-resistant protozoa in swimming pools. This study provides useful information to improve the safety of swimming pool water and deduce the risk of protozoan infections.
