  • Purpose: The MERS(Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) outbreaks in Korea highlighted dramatically the failings of traditional hospital environment for controlling or preventing infections among both patients and healthcare workers. MERS is transmitted by droplets that can be airborne over a limited area. The point should be emphasized that MERS in South Korea was predominantly a hospital-acquired (not a community-acquired) infection, because approximately 93% of MERS cases were resulted from exposure in hospital settings. This paper tries to suggest the design guidelines of negative pressured isolation ward for the sake of proper control of severe respiratory infectious diseases. Methods: Literature survey on the design guideline and regulations of airborne infection wards in Korea, Europe U.K. and CDC of U.S. have been carries out. 4 special infection wards in Hongkong, Germany, Japan and Korea have been surveyed in order to make the best use of the experiences related to facility design and operations. Results: Operating system influencing the facility design, space organizations of infectious ward including required space and zoning, and circulations of patients, staffs and materials are proposed. Implications: The results of this paper can be the basic data for the design of the airborne infection ward and relevant regulations. Afterwards in-depth study such as the development of space standards for the single bedroom, locker room and so on could be explored.

  • There are U.S. troops with a force about 290,000 strong stationed all around the world, approximately 150 countries. Among the troops, USFK has performed principal part with its stationing for 50 years against the military threat of North Korea. However, as a result of an investigation made into environmental contamination of several bases which were restituted from US to ROK by the Land Partnership Plan in the process of relocation of USFK, it was found that the area was contaminated by not only TPH and BTEX caused by diesel fuel and JP-8 but also various heavy metal over the standard level according to the operations of corps. Among these bases, 4 corps, each of which has different duties and function, were chosen to be analyzed for the characteristics and degrees of soil contamination. Fisrt of all, in armored camp the soil was contaminated by TPH and heavy metal (Zn, Ni, Pb) due to the repairing activities of tracked vehicles and shooting exercises. In army aviation camp, the soil was contaminated by TPH, BTEX and heavy metal (Zn, Cd) due to repairing activities of aircrafts. Also, in engineer camp there was contaminated area polluted by TPH and heavy metal (Zn, Pb) caused by open-air storage of various construction materials and TPH, BTEX and heavy metal (Zn, Pb, Cu) contamination of aircraft shooting area in shooting range camp were detected. Managing environment will be more effective when we identify the contaminative characteristics and take necessary measures in advance.

  • Establishment of safety net for the socially disadvantaged attracts large attention because of the recent crime increasing against vulnerable groups. For the successful establishment of social safety net, the test-bed for evaluation and realization of crime-related research results is required. However, previous R&D test-bed projects such as The Korean Land Specialization Program or U-Eco City project remains only to the stage of verification. Therefore, there are limitedness for realization of result technologies or sustainable operation & management of test-bed after projects finished. So, sustainable operation & management system and guideline of test-bed are necessary. Therefore, this study reviews the strengths and weaknesses of existing test-bed cases and intelligent security researches. After reviewing, the concept of a Intelligent Security Test-bed is established and appropriate test-bed selection criteria is also suggested. Based on objective criteria, selected test-bed can achieve sustainable management even after finishing the project and contribute the construction of standard model for citizen's safety.

  • This study investigated the effects of PG on IL-$1{\beta}$ expression and determined cellular factors involved in PG-mediated IL-$1{\beta}$ up-regulation in mononuclear cells in order to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory responses associated with bacterial pathogen-associated molecular patterns in the diseased artery. Exposure of human monocytic leukemia THP-1 cells to PG resulted in enhanced secretion of IL-$1{\beta}$ and also profound induction of the IL-$1{\beta}$ gene transcript. These effects were abrogated by OxPAPC, an inhibitor of TLR-2/4. Pharmacological inhibitors such as U0126, SP6001250, Akti IV, rapamycin, and DPI also significantly attenuated PG-mediated IL-$1{\beta}$ up-regulation. However, polymyxin B did not influence the IL-$1{\beta}$ expression. This study indicates that PG contributes to vascular inflammation in atherosclerotic plaques by up-regulating expression of IL-$1{\beta}$ via TLR-2, Akt, mTOR, MAPKs, and ROS.

  • This study aims to predict the likely effect of economic sanctions on North Korea by examining case studies of Iran and Iraq. While UN sanctions against Iraq had immediate negative consequences for society, such as causing famine and reinforcing the authoritarian regime, sanctions against Iran had some productive consequences after they were reinforced by the U.S. and EU in significantly reduced oil exports and government expenditure, which in turn led to regime change and willingness to negotiate nuclear programs for economic recovery. Apart from these distinct differences, sanctions in both countries caused high inflation, shortage of necessary supplies, and increased unemployment. Case studies of Iran and Iraq also reveal that the sanctions disproportionately affected women and children, which implies that the recently reinforced economic sanctions of the U.S. and China against North Korea will cause more suffering of similarly socially marginalized groups in North Korea.

  • This paper suggests heuristic algorithm for single-model cross-over assembly line balancing problem that is a kind of NP-hard problem. The assembly line balance problem is mainly applied with metaheuristic methods, and no algorithm has been proposed to find the exact solution of polynomial time, making it very difficult to apply in practice. The proposed bi-directional clustering algorithm computes the minimum number of worker m* = ⌈W/c⌉ and goal cycle time c* = ⌈W/m*⌉ from the given total assembling time W and cycle time c. Then we assign each workstation i=1,2,…,m* to Ti=c* ±α≤ c using bi-directional clustering method. For 7 experimental data, this bi-directional clustering algorithm same performance as other methods.
