BIM Quality Assurance for DFS in Design Phase (설계단계에서의 BIM 안전설계 품질검토)

  • Since the safety accidents on the construction sites take large part of total industry disasters, research on the construction safety has been getting important. Recently, as BIM technology allows cooperation between designer and constructor groups, it becomes more active worldwide than before to study on the ways of accomplish construction safety improvement in the design phase. In this paper, we suggested a checklist for assuring construction safety in the phase of design, and performed automatic evaluation by using a BIM quality checking tool. This shows that it is possible for us to find out the construction safety has been improved in the design phase. Once the standard checklist and assurance process are developed, they are expected to play a great role of reducing disasters in the construction industry.

  • A cabin for Mr. and Mrs. Popenoe of 1922 was designed by the eminent Los Angeles architect, Rudolph M. Schindler. It stands out as an early exemplar of Schindler's most notable work in its unique employment of compositional strategy. Unfortunately, the cabin was demolished before an in-depth research was executed. In addition, there remains no documentary record with regard to the construction process, structural details and the use of materials of the built cabin. However, a set of drawings of the house are housed in the Schindler Archive. Reworking drawings and fabricating a scale model based on the materials obtained from the Archive, this article first depicts the evolution of the design, and then, attempts to investigate underlying principles governing the spatial composition of the cabin.

  • The introduction of the BIM into the architectural service industry is currently not being conducted smoothly. The purpose of this research is to, considering the current state of the market, establish long-term strategies that will enable the BIM to successfully settle. The survey has been conducted in target of architects in order to understand pending issues. Additionally, the articles regarding BIM have been researched for the purpose of better understanding the current societal demands. Indicated by survey results, the architects agree to a certain extent upon the need of BIM for architectural designs, yet also express concerns that the BIM introduction does not guarantee betterment in efficiency. The problematic aspects of BIM introduction that have already been discussed in some policy-related studies include a multitude of complicated issues that are unable to be resolved within a short period of time: underdeveloped BIM infra, the limit of BIM software itself, political issues regarding licensing and lack of social awareness. Based on the issues mentioned above, three main areas of focus along with their respective practical strategies and tasks have been designated. Finally, this research has analyzed the current situation and its issues along with the political solutions of 12 projects, amongst which include the standard for plan drawings, licensing system improvement, cost standard and BIM introduction support.   • Recently, the fourth industrial revolution has a great influence on the development of many industries as well as the construction industry. Various technologies related to the industrial revolution 4.0, such as AI and big data, have gained much attention. However, little has been known about the importance and preparedness of stakeholders of the construction industry in Korea for the industry 4.0 technologies so far. This study revealed how the stakeholders perceive and prepare for industry 4.0 using a survey. In addition, collaboration potential score for each technology was calculated to find technologies with high potential for collaboration. Result is that the importance of the technologies was evaluated high in overall, but the preparedness and implementation in university education or business was evaluated low. Technologies with high potential for industry-university collaboration are AI/big data and 3D printing/3D scanning. This study can contribute to the training of industry 4.0 experts and improving preparedness, which would enable the innovation and application of industry 4.0 technologies in the construction industry.

  • With an awareness of the fact that influence of building industry on the environment problems is great, many countries have been endeavoring to construct sustainable and environmentally-friendly buildings. In Korea, the GBCS (Green Building Certification System) has been in force since 2002. Total 6 types of buildings are dealt in the GBCS. Especially, it is expected that the number of apartment complexes, which are the most common type of residences in Korea, applying for GBCS has increased continuously. In this study, we aim to pick out the items requiring improvement for the green apartment complex. Existing 12 certified apartment complexes were selected. GBCS assessment results and actual conditions of design and construction were investigated and analyzed. Total 18 items requiring improvement were picked out in accordance with the average score-to-allotted point ratio. Relevant particulars expected to be helpful for the next design works were also presented.

Introduction of Wooden Kagome Structure to the Furniture Design

  • This study is carried out to introduce the concept of Kagome structure as the new trial for the furniture design and the feasibility of its utilization in furniture industry. Kagome means originally the two dimensional bamboo-basket woven pattern that is composed of interlaced triangles whose lattice points each have four neighboring points, which was used in traditional bamboo craft design like 'Jukbuin(bamboo-wife)'. Its unique truss structure has been widely used by many kinds of the domain of science and engineering in mechanical and architectural industry with some merits, i,e, material utilization efficiency and robust strength. Here we tried to introduce two dimensional and three dimensional form of Kagome which are supposed to be a furniture design elements. Authors think these Kagome design could be realized with domestic lumber of inferior properties. Both of them would be used as a decorative element or mechanical supporter in furniture design.

An International Index for Customer Satisfaction in the Construction Industry

  • In a competitive business environment, like construction, achieving customer satisfaction has been identified as an important element for measuring project's success and sustaining competitive advantage. Traditionally, customers were expelled from the product development process. Little effort was done, in the past to identify the factors that lead to customer satisfaction and hence, use them for product improvement. Organizations that adopted that approach, encountered the risk of losing their customers. In construction, end-users of governmental housing projects were excluded from the design decision making process and accordingly, their requirements were not reflected in design. Although a number national customer satisfaction indices and barometers have been developed worldwide, they have their own limitations and shortcomings. This paper aims to develop an international index for customer satisfaction in the construction Industry. For the first time in construction literature, this research identified, validated and classified 45 drivers for achieving customer satisfaction in the construction industry.

  • At present, there are many companies that can produce modular housing. However, if the housing projects are conducted without design standards and principles, each company will supply housing according to its own design standards, resulting in a loss of opportunity to promote standardization at a national level. Korea's modular construction technology is still in its infancy, and there is a lack of MC design applications due to the limited construction market. In recent years, however, related R&D has been carried out by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in order to activate modular construction. As a result, test-beds for public rental housing are currently being built, and the public rental housing applied with the modular construction method is expected to spread in the near future. In this regard, this study seeks to promote more economical and efficient production and supply of modular housing. To this end, it investigates the current status of modular construction, analyzes the problems and proposes a serious of MC design standards as part of the design standardization and open system for modular housing industry to solve the problems.

  • Various project delivery methods have been utilized by owners over the years to maximize project performance. The design-build delivery method is being increasingly used due to the advantages it can offer to an engineering construction industry. Numerous studies have advocated the use of design/build over the traditional design/bid/build delivery approach. This study represents comprehensive analysis of 40 projects from the construction industry and shows that design/build method may not provide all the benefits to project performance. This study found timesaving was a definitive advantage of design/build project delivery, but the positive effects of cost changes was not convincing. Based on the results of the study, the project management expertise and experience of the contractor may have a greater impact on project performance outcomes than focusing on project delivery strategy only.

  • In this study, improvement of university education is suggested so that university graduates in Architectural Engineering can work in the plant engineering industry without major retraining, which is generally required by plant engineering companies. Before the disposition of manpower to a plant engineering site, new recruits are retrained for about 2~3 years, since university education is neither sufficient, nor appropriate to handle plant engineering tasks. It is necessary to implement practical plant engineering into university education, so that graduates can work effectively in plant engineering fields, without major retraining. For a case study of an S2 University located in Seoul, it is enough to supplement the interdisciplinary program with plant engineering subjects, if proper texts are developed. To replace the plant engineering education offered by the company with university education, the following measures should be taken. First, basic plant engineering should be taught for 15 hours. Second, education on design and drawings should be reinforced.
