  • The vacuum interrupter (VI) is widely used in medium-voltage switching circuits due to its abilities and advantages as an environmental friendly circuit breaker. An understanding of the vacuum arc flow phenomena is very important for improving the performance of vacuum interrupter. In order to closely examine the vacuum arc phenomena, it is necessary to predict the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) characteristics by the multidisciplinary numerical modeling, which is coupled with the electromagnetic and the thermal flow fields, simultaneously. In this study, we have investigated arc plasma constriction phenomena and an effect of AMF on the arc plasma with the high-current vacuum arcs for the cup-type AMF electrode by using a commercial finite element analysis (FEA) package, ANSYS. The simulation results applied with various AMFs and constant Joule heat generation show that strong axial magnetic field (AMF) permits the arc to be maintained in a diffused mode to a high-current vacuum arc. However, further studies are required on the two-way coupling method and radiation model for arc plasma in order to accomplish the advanced analysis method.

  • Purpose : ARC syndrome refers to an association of arthrogryposis, renal tubular dysfunction, and cholestasis. The VPS33B gene was recently identified as the causative gene. So far, 41 cases of ARC syndrome have been reported worldwide, and it has rarely been reported in Korea. This study was conducted to report the clinical findings of seven ARC syndrome cases in Korean children, focusing especially on renal tubular dysfunction. Methods : The hospital records of 7 cases diagnosed as ARC syndrome at Severance Hospital between Mar. 1995 and Aug. 2005 were reviewed and analyzed. Results : Of the 7 cases, 4 were boys and 3 were girls. Six patients(85$\%$) were born with normal birth weight at term, and one was born at preterm. All cases presented with cholestasis and severe jaundice. According to the type of arthrogryposis described by Brown et al, type 3 and 4 were found in 2 patients and type,6, 7, and the undistributed type in one patient respectively. Other associated clinical findings were as follows : failure to thrive in 6(85$\%$), lax skin in 5(71$\%$), and gray platelet syndrome in 4(57$\%$). Urine analysis revealed 6 cases(85$\%$) with proteinuria, 3(43$\%$) with hematuria, 5(71$\%$) with glycosuria, 2(29$\%$) with phosphaturia and 2(29$\%$) with calciuria. Serum electrolytes showed 4 cases(57$\%$) with hyponatremia, 3(43$\%$) with hypokalemia, and 1(14$\%$) with creatinine elevation. Renal tubular dysfunctions were diagnosed as renal tubular acidosis in 6 cases(85$\%$), nephrogenic diabetes insipidus in 2(29$\%$), and Fanconi syndrome in 2(29$\%$). During the follow-up period, 2(29$\%$) had no treatment, 5(85$\%$) had continuous supplementation to correct the electrolyte imbalance and acidosis, and 1(14$\%$) had dialysis. Only one patient had a family history of ARE syndrome in a sibling. Four cases(57$\%$) were diagnosed at the mean age of 8.2 months, and one case was lost during follow-up. Ages of the survived 2 cases were 13 and 25 months, respectively. Conclusion : The rare disease of ARC syndrome Is associated with severe renal dysfunction. However, this study revealed that the renal manifestation of ARC syndrome in Korean children is relatively mild and survival rate is higher than that of previous studies. Contrary to previous reports, this study showed that familial cases are rare and sporadic occurence is possible in Korea. Thus, the diagnosis of this syndrome requires a careful evaluation of the venal function in cases of congenital arthrogryposis, and a mandatory genetic counseling of affected family for prevention of familial occurance. • We report our 110 ks Chandra observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) 0104-72.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The X-ray morphology shows two prominent lobes along the northwest-southeast direction and a soft faint arc in the east. Previous low resolution X-ray images attributed the unresolved emission from the southeastern lobe to a Be/X-ray star. Our high resolution Chandra data clearly shows that this emission is diffuse, shock-heated plasma, with negligible X-ray emission from the Be star. The eastern arc is positionally coincident with a filament seen in optical and infrared observations. Its X-ray spectrum is well fit by plasma of normal SMC abundances, suggesting that it is from shocked ambient gas. The X-ray spectra of the lobes show overabundant Fe, which is interpreted as emission from the reverse-shocked Fe-rich ejecta. The overall spectral characteristics of the lobes and the arc are similar to those of Type Ia SNRs, and we propose that SNR 0104-72.3 is the first case for a robust candidate Type Ia SNR in the SMC. On the other hand, the remnant appears to be interacting with dense clouds toward the east and to be associated with a nearby star-forming region. These features are unusual for a standard Type Ia SNR. Our results suggest an intriguing possibility that the progenitor of SNR 0104-72.3 might have been a white dwarf of a relatively young population.

  • In this paper, we investigate a family of graphs associated to collections of arcs on surfaces. These multiarc graphs naturally interpolate between arc graphs and flip graphs, both well studied objects in low dimensional geometry and topology. We show a number of rigidity results, namely showing that, under certain complexity conditions, that simplicial maps between them only arise in the "obvious way". We also observe that, again under necessary complexity conditions, subsurface strata are convex. Put together, these results imply that certain simplicial maps always give rise to convex images.

  • An arc model based on the N-S equations modified by adding an energy source term to take account of the arc is developed and solved using Taylor-Garlerkin FEM in the present paper. The numerical method is applied to the simulation of the opening procedure of a puffer type GCB. Moving boundary conditions of the arc chamber during operation is taken into account. Numerical predictions of the temperature profiles at different strokes are presented.

  • Numerical analysis of 150kW Huels-type arc jet was performed using compressible Navier-Stokes CFD code. To consider chemical reaction by high temperature, the flow was assumed to be chemical equilibrium states. As a turbulence and a radiation model, the two-equation k-epsilon model and the 3-band radiation model were adopted, respectively. Mass flow rate and current density were given as conditions for calculations. In this study, two kinds of mechanisms for injection of air flow wire considered. One is that air is provided by left wall surface and the other is that air is injected from upper wall surface. The pressure, density and temperature contours of two cases were compared and heat transfer rates were estimated. The numerical results of two cases were not much different to each other. However, in real 150KW device, air is injected from upper wall surface with swirl. To calculate more accurately, swirl effect is must be considered.

  • Welding of corner area across the edge is a difficult problem in robotized arc welding system, especially when continuously-welded leakage-proof product is required. This paper presents the methodology of cooperation plan of an arc welding robot and 1 or 2 axis welding manipulators for corner area welding. Welding trajectory for the robot is generated using clothoid curves; symmetrical double clothoid curve or unsymmetrical clothoid curve depending on the nature of the workpiece. The clothoid curve is first formulated for the case of linear type positioning table and then applied to the case of rotary type manipulator. The methodology is then illustrated for practical downhand welding situations.

  • Artificial neural network (ANN) model is applied to predict arc welding process window for automotive steel plate. Target weldment was various automotive steel plate combination with lap fillet joint. The accuracy of prediction was evaluated through comparison experimental result to ANN simulation. The effect of ANN variables on the accuracy is investigated such as number of hidden layers, perceptrons and transfer function type. A static back propagation model is established and tested. The result shows comparatively accurate predictability of the suggested ANN model. However, it restricts to use nonlinear transfer function instead of linear type and suggests only one single hidden layer rather than multiple ones to get better accuracy. In addition to this, obvious fact is affirmed again that the more perceptrons guarantee the better accuracy under the precondition that there are enough experimental database to train the neural network.

  • Advancements in silicon phase control (SCR) technologies provide an arc welding power supply that has the capability to allow the alteration of the Alternating Current (AC) welding output. These technologies provide a square wave output involving sixteen frequency selections and multiple balance selections. While an AC out put is known to minimize magnetic disturbances associate with Direct Current (DC), the potentials of a non-sinusoidal waveform have not been explored. The focus of the paper is to determine the effects that the frequency and balance of an AC wave form output will have upon a high speed Submerge Arc (SAW) application. The test matrix of the project includes welding .250" steel plate. Joint type is square groove with a travel speed of 65 IPM. Each of the weld parameters was held constant, only the frequency and/or balance were altered between welds. Each frequency/balance combination involved three-gap spacing. Upon completion of the welds the bead profiles were measured and recorded. A relationships/trends were observed with various frequency and balance values. Optimum frequency and balance values were found for the .250" square groove application which permit consistent weld sizing, ease of slag removal, and minimal plate distortion.
