  • This paper was designed to assess the adhesive properties of hard coatings on non-nitrided and nitrided various tool steels. Estimations of adhesion were done to scratch test which is mainly used in hard coating. The critical load$(L_c)$ between coating and substrate is defined through analysis of frictional load vs. normal load curve, signals of acoustic emission and optical observations. Coatings employed in this study are TiN, CrN and TiAlN, tools as substrates are STD11, STD61 and SKH51. It was classified to substrates with/without intermediate nitrided layer and hard coatings on substrate were deposited by arc PVD. Results showed that harder substrates and coatings give higher values of critical loads.

  • In this study, the lap welding between austenitic stainless steel and carbon steel was carried out using arc spot welding process and weldability of welded specimens was estimated. From the tensile-shear strength test, micro Vickers hardness test, and microstructure observation, specimen of 6.5mm(hole of upper plate) showed the best results in terms of tensile-shear strength and nugget shape. And there was an unmixed zone in fusion boundary between the carbon steel base metal and bulk weld metal. This zone had very thin width with the hard microstructure. The shape of weld nugget in arc spot welding of dissimilar metal welds was predicted by searching thermal history of a weld joint through a three-dimensional finite element model. From the numerical analysis, predicted the shape of weld nugget showed good agreement with the experiment(Received August 24, 1999)

  • Electric arc furnace steelmaking dust has various physicochemical properties as volatile components generated in the melting process of steel scraps in an electric arc furnace, which is captured in oxide form as fine powder by reacting with oxygen in the air. In order to efficiently recycle these electric arc furnace dust, a kinetic basic experiment and a pilot production test were carried out in parallel. As a result, it was found that the electric arc furnace dust contain a large amount of Cl and alkali components, thus it was expected that the compounds have a great adverse effect on the actual operation for the recycling. It was confirmed that the volatilization behavior was progressing actively at $1100^{\circ}C$ and the electric arc furnace dust was melted at $1250^{\circ}C$. These results are the same as a result of pilot test for the formation behavior of zinc oxide and reduced iron. These results should be useful as basic data for designing the recycling plant of the electric arc furnace dust and establishing the operating conditions.

  • This study is performed to evaluate the flexural performance of reinforced concrete columns with electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates. Electric arc furnace slag is a by-product obtained from the process of refining scrap steel. The electric arc furnace slag can be used as a concrete aggregate, because it mainly consists of CaO and $SiO_2$, similar to natural rocks and minerals. Three rectangular columns with various types of aggregate were cast to test in flexure. All of the test specimens had a cross-section of $250{\times}250$mm and a height of 1,500 mm in test region. The specimens were designed to apply reversed cyclic antisymmetric moment and constant axial force. The experimental results showed that the specimens with electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates had superior flexural performance than the specimen with natural aggregates.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the corrosion protective property of Al-Mg high-freqeuncy arc metal spray method in comparison to Zn-Sn and Zn-Al alloys by electrochemical method and CASS test. As a result, it appeared that Al-Mg alloy had very higher corrosion protective property through the electrochemical characteristic and the CASS test comparing with the other alloys.

  • A computational approach was developed to understand about the arc quenching process in a gas circuit breaker(GCB). This approach is a program to analyze the gas flow in the breaker. The arc is processed at the same time. The program was used the so-called FLIC method for gas analysis techniques. It was referenced that the arc is interpreted the 'a Simplified Enthalpy Flow Arc Model'. In order to validate about the results of the program, a Auto Puffer GCB was chosen as the test subject. Because, the breaker is the one that arc current is interrupted by using the arc heating. And also, the current interrupting capability can be obtained only owing to the positive utilization(auto puffer) of the clogging phenomenon, without other puffer actions. In this paper, it has been realized that the entire arc quenching process is computerized, which is based on the self-flow current interruption by the auto puffer action. This program, which was verified through experiments, produced good results.

  • Magnetic arc extinguishing technology is effective as an extinguishing device for low-voltage direct current (DC) circuit breakers with a resistive load of ≤4 kW. The separation distance between the magnet and the electrical contact must be shortened to increase the magnetic arc extinguishing force. However, if the magnet is installed too close to the electrical contact points, the magnet is exposed to high temperatures due to the arc current generated when the load current is cut off and the magnetism is lost. To solve this problem, the effective magnetic flux density at the electrical contact can be maintained high by placing the arc extinguishing magnet in a tandem structure with the electrical contact point between them, and the proper separation distance between the contact points and the magnet can be maintained. In addition, an electric arc extinguishing technology that emits arc energy using a series circuit of diode and resistor is used to suppress the continuous arc voltage generated by the inductive load. For the proposed circuit breaker, the breaking characteristics are analyzed through the breaking test for the DC load of the 760 V level, the load power of 4 kW, and the time constant of 5 ms, and an appropriate arc extinguishing design guideline is proposed.

  • Recently rotary-arc, thermal expansion and their composite interrupters are widely used in the distribution power system because they have lots of advantages in making the larger interrupting capacity, the smaller size, the lighter weight and the less surge. A model interrupter of rotary-arc type, which has constant stroke and thermal expansion volume, was studied by varying the design parameters, i.e. the number of turns of the driving coil, the inner diameter of the moving contact, the gas pressure and the shape of the fixed contact for this project. Short cicuit current interrupting tests were conducted to the model interrupters by varying the requirements from 42% to 175% of the test voltage, interrupting current and transient recovery voltage for the test duty No.4 of 7.2kV 12.5kA single phase test. The pressure rise, minimum and maximum arcing times were analyzed for each model interrupter. All types of model interrupters showed good interrupting performances and sufficient design margins for the ratings.
