  • In this paper, the response surface method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis to optimize the shape of a multi-blade centrifugal fan, is described. For numerical analysis, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard k - c turbulence model are transformed into non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Due to the large number of blades in this centrifugal fan, the flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow by introducing the impeller force models for economic calculations. Linear Upwind Differencing Scheme(LUDS) is used to approximate the convection terms in the governing equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. Design variables, location of cur off, radius of cut off, expansion angle of scroll and width of impeller were selected to optimize the shapes of scroll and blades. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. It was found that the optimization process provides reliable design of this kind of fans with reasonable computing time.

  • In this paper, genetic algorithm (GA)-based Thin Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator (FBAR) RF filter design technique is proposed. Since the BVD(Butterworth-Van Dyke) lumped element model is valid only around the resonance, FBAR filter design technique based on BVD circuit has an approximate error. Instead of using BVD model, optimizing filter design method utilizes an analytical electrical impedance equation of FBAR. The geometry of FBAR such as thickness of the piezoelectric layer and area which significantly affect the filter response is optimized by GA. US-PCS Rx Bandpass filter obtained by the proposed technique shows a better response comparing with the typical and BVD-based filter.

  • The motion and time-mean drift force of a 2-D floating BBDB in waves are studied with and without taking account of fluctuating air pressure in the air chamber. It has been found numerically that the drift for a of the BBDB is in the reverse direction of propagation of the incident waves over specific frequency ranges as found by McCormick through his experiment work. The drift force is calculated by Pinkster's near-field method. Since Maruo's formula method for the drift force is always positive, Maruo's formula is only approximate and should be replaced by the correct near-field method.

  • This work reports a set of approximate analytical solutions describing the initial transient process of close-contact melting between a rectangular parallelepiped solid and a flat plate on which either constant temperature or constant heat flux is imposed. Not only relative motion of the solid block tangential to the heating plate, but also the density difference between the solid and liquid phase is incorporated in the model. The thin film approximation reduces the force balance between the solid weight and liquid pressure, and the energy balance at the melting front into a simultaneous ordinary differential equation system. The normalized model equations admit compactly expressed analytical solutions which include the already approved two-dimensional solutions as a subset. In particular, the normalized liquid film thickness is independent of all pertinent parameters, thereby facilitating to define the transition period of close-contact melting. A unique behavior of the solid descending velocity due to the density difference is also resolved by the present solution. A new geometric function which alone represents the three-dimensional effect is introduced, and its properties are clarified. One of the representative results is that heat transfer is at least enhanced at the expense of the increase in friction as the cross-sectional shape deviates from the square under the same contact area.

  • In this paper, we discuss how ancient Egyptians find out the area of the circle based on $\ll$Ahmose Papyrus$\gg$. Vogel and Engels studied the quadrature of the circle, one of the basic concepts of ancient Egyptian mathematics. We look closely at the interpretation based on the approximate right triangle of Robins and Shute. As circumstantial evidence for Robbins and Shute's hypothesis, Egyptians prior to the 12th dynasty considered the perception of a right triangle as examples of 'simultaneous equation', 'unit of length', 'unit of slope', 'Egyptian triple', and 'right triangles transfer to Greece'. Finally, we present a method to utilize the squaring the circle by ancient Egyptians interpreted by Robbins and Shute as the dynamic symmetry of Hambidge.

  • The finite element method is usually formulated by utilizing the variation principle. In this paper, we introduce the approximate equation of finite element from Helmholtz eqation by means of the Galerkin method, which provides the best approximation of those methods known as the method of weighted residuals, and a numerical simulation based of the finite element method is applied to analysing the acoustic modes and the pattern of sound radiation in two and three dimensional sound fields. Beside the numerical calculations, the acoustic modes and the sound pressure level are mesured by scale model experiments. The finite element analysis of the model shows very good agreement with the mesured results.

  • Numerical study is presented for the analysis of three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows in multiblade centrifugal fan. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard k - $\epsilon$ turbulence model are transformed to non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Linear Upwind Differencing Scheme(LUDS) is used to approximate the convection terms in the governing equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. The computational area is divided into three blocks; core, impeller and scroll, which are linked by multi-block method. The flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow, and mathematical formula established from the cascade theory and empirical coefficient are employed to simulate tile flow through the impeller. From comparisons between the computational results and the experimental data, the validity of the mathematical formula for the blade forces was examined and good results were obtained qualitatively. Hence, we can get the flow characteristics of multi-blade centrifugal fan and it will be a corner stone of the development of the multiblade centrifugal fan.

  • This paper presents a methodology for photovoltaic (PV) system allocation in distribution systems using a discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO). The PV allocation problem is in the category of mixed integer nonlinear programming and its formulation may include multi-valued dis-crete variables. Thus, the PSO requires a scheme to deal with multi-valued discrete variables. This paper introduces a novel multi-level quantization scheme using a sigmoid function for discrete particle swarm optimization. The technique is employed to a standard PSO architecture; the same velocity update equation as in continuous versions of PSO is used but the particle's positions are updated in an alternative manner. The set of multi-level quantization is defined as integer multiples of powers-of-two terms to efficiently approximate the sigmoid function in transforming a particle's position into discrete values. A comparison with a genetic algorithm (GA) is performed to verify the quality of the solutions obtained.

  • The classical buckling theory assumes that prebuckling behavior is linear and that the effect of prebuckling deformations on buckling can be ignored. However, when the rise to span ratio decreases, prebuckling deformation cannot be ignored and the symetrical buckling strength can be smaler than the asymetrical buckling strength. Finally, arches can fail due to snap-through buckling. This paper investigates the non-linear behavior and strength of pin-ended parabolic shallow arches using the non-linear governing differential equation of shallow arches. These results were compared with the solution for the symmetrical buckling load of pin-ended parabolic shallow arches was suggested.

  • The transient brake time or distance is one of very important factors to guess the vehicle speed to inspect an automobile accident. But, it is usual that the vehicle speed is estimated by using only skid mark without considering the transient brake distance. Deceleration and the friction coefficients of tire and road surface play an important role in calculating the brake distance. In this paper, a scheme is presented to estimate more accurate automobile speed. The scheme contains the effect of the transient brake distance on the speed. Experiment was carried out on the asphalt, unpacked road to get relationships between the speeds and the skid mark distances, and to get the transient brake time. The experimental results were utilized to construct the equation to approximate more realistic vehicle speeds.
