An Application Layer Multicast Performance Enhancement Scheme (응용 계층 멀티캐스트 성능 향상 기법)

  • Application layer multicast(ALM) has been developed as an alternative to support the multi-receiver applications due to the slow deployment of IP multicast. Unlike routers in IP multicast, end systems participating in a ALM session are not optimized for relaying data and have various processing and network capacity. Therefore, with the increased role of end systems, the delay incurred at the end systems occupy large portion of the end-to-end delay. In this paper, we model the end system delay of ALM sessions and analyze its impact on the performance of the existing ALM schemes. Furthermore, we propose an enhanced scheme, based on the existing mesh-based scheme, which reflects the end system delay We also evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme by simulation and show that it reduces the end-to-end delay compared with the existing scheme.

  • We present a new MDA-based Mobile-IPv6 multicast routing algorithm for wirelese service operators to offer Mobile-IP over IMT-2000 service under IMT-2000 network by taking advantage of the existing infrastructure for IMT-2000 multimedia application services. The extended IMT-2000 system architectures use an PDSNs (i.e. IWFs), and the home network (i.e. Internet) backbone and intermediate network are composed of ATM entities. A key feature of the new protocol is the use of MDA(Multicast Delivery Agent) to reduce delivery path length of the multicast datagram. We show that proposed protocol is efficient in terms of various performance measures such as multicast traffic load, multicast related handoff, and average routing length when we implement it using the Mobile-IPv6. Particularly, the number of tunneling and average routing length of datagram are reduced relatively, the multicast traffic load is also decreased.

  • In this paper, we implement and verify XMIP integrating IETF Mobile IP and the Explicit Multicast mechanism for a great number of small group multicast communications. U a source node sends Xcast packets explicitly inserting destination nodes into the headers, each Xcast router decides routes and forwards the packets toward each destination node based on unicast routing table without the support of multicast trees. n is a straightforward and simple multicast mechanism just based on a unicast routing table without maintaining multicast states because of the inheritance from the Explicit Multicast mechanism. This research modifies and extends the functionality of IETF Mobile IP's mobility agents, such as HA/FA to HA+/FA+ respectively, considering interworking with Xcast networks. Xcast packets captured by HA+ are forwarded into X-in-X tunnel interfaces for each FA+ referred to the binding table of HA.. This X-in-X tunneling mechanism can effectively solve the traffic concentration problem of IETF Mobile IP multicast services. Finally WLAN-based testbed is built and a multi-user Instant messenger system is developed as a Xcast application for finally verify the feasibility of the implemented XMIP/Xcast protocols.

  • Application sharing is the ability to use existing applications, such as Excel or MS-Word, during a group session without modification. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of an application sharing system, called ShareIt, which enable users to share arbitrary MS-Windows applications under the Win 3.1/95/NT and X window system, and evaluation of the system performance. To share an application, the image of the application window is captured and transmitted to other sites. With the use of the window capturing method, ShareIt allows any MS-Windows application to be shared regardless of not only the window systems but also the version-up of window systems.

  • Due to the frequent and unpredictable topology changes, multicast still remains as challenge and no one-size-fits-all protocol could serve all kinds of needs in mobile ad hoc network. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme of Hierarchical Eulerian Ring Oriented Multicast Architecture (HEROMA) over mobile ad hoc network. It has features that concentrate on efficiency and robustness simultaneously. It is also an application-driven proposal for hazard detection. Architectures including Eulerian ring, hierarchy and multicast agent are investigated in detail Simulation results different level of improvements on control traffic, end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio by comparing with tree-based and mesh-based multicast protocols.

  • the multicast services with multiple senders is interested according to the internet services such as multiple audio/video conference services. With the N-plex multicast protocols, multicast session manager is also needed for membership control and session control. RMCP-3 is designed for N:N group communications which is standardizing in ITU-T and supports multiple senders who join sessions. In this paper, we consider requirements of multicast manager for multiplex multicast communication protocol which many a joiner has a role in sender such conference application.

  • Overlay multicast delivery method is a new approach in which multicast functionality is implemented at the end-hosts application layer in the timing of sparse deployment of IP multicast. However, existing overlay multicast protocols are not being standardization and many restrictions occur when delivering high capacity contents. Therefore, new delivery mechanism is required for the overlay multicast based high capacity contents delivery. In this paper. we separate group management and delivery management of overlay multicast and describe a capable group management. We also defined high speed delivery method better than that of existing overlay multicast through use of collaborated distribute downloading. This improved efficiency of massive contents transmission.

  • The access control techniques, which can control unauthorized members to access to multicast service, have not been studied very often while there are a lot of on-going study on secure multicast architecture, multicast key distribution and sender authentication scheme have been studied. Multi level access control scheme in multicast can be used in a remote secure conference or to provide graduated multimedia services to each customers. In fact, multicast network has its own virtual networks according to different security levels. However, Early schemes are not effective when it protects unauthorized access in multi-access network environment. Furthermore this scheme does not provide us with hierarchical access control mechanism. This paper, therefore, proposes hierarchical access control scheme to provide the effectiveness in network layer by security level comparison. And we also suggests hierarchical key distribution scheme for multi level access control in application layer and effective hierarchical key renewal scheme in dynamic multicast environment which is easy to join and leaving the multicast group.

  • 기존에 멀티캐스트를 제공하기 위해서 제안된 Any Source Multicast(ASM)의 경우는 각각의 라우터에서 망의 상태정보를 유지해야 하는 문제점으로 인하여 아직까지 망에 구현되고 있지 않다. 이를 해결하기 위해 망의 상태정보를 가지지 않는 Xcast, Application Layer Multicast(ALM)과 같은 메커니즘들이 제안되었다. 하지만 Xcast의 경우는 경로상의 모든 라우터가 Xcast를 지원해야 하는 문제점이 있고, ALM에는 다양한 모델이 제시되었지만 구체적 메커니즘들은 아직 연구중인 상태이다. 본 논문에서는 멀티캐스트를 응용계충에서 수행하는 오버레이 멀티캐스트 모델에 기반한 Designated Router Multicast(DRM)을 제안한다. 제안된 메커니즘은 망에서 상태 정보가 필요하지 않으며 이를 위해 종단 라우터 간의 Mesh 구조에 기반한 터널링 방법에 의해 멀티캐스트 서비스를 수행한다.

ECTP Application Test on the APAN Network (APAN에서의 ECTPT응용 실험)

  • A lot of institutes have proposed RMT (Reliable Multicast Transport) techniques over IP multicast environment which provides only best-effort services. The ECTP (Enhanced Communications Transport Protocol) is a kind of RMT technique and an international standard of ITU-T and JTC1/SC6. It is a protocol that provides reliability fer IP multicast environment. In this paper, we tested ECTP applications which are MFTP (Multicast file transport protocol) and WB (white Board) on the APAN (Asia-Pacific Advanced Network) with the Kyushu University in Japan. We measured ECTP traffic using a packet capture tool that programmed by Pcap library that is developed in Lawrence Berkeley institute. In according to the result, we think that ECTP is an efficient protocol in transporting files to many receivers simultaneously.
