  • Daylight responsive dimming systems are energy saving systems using available daylight. It is not popular to be adopted in buildings because of blocked daylight by shading systems. Therefore, both daylight responsive dimming systems and automated roller shading systems should be integrated. In this research, prediction process of yearly lighting energy savings is developed for application integrated systems in buildings, and then the process is applied to an example building. The predicted data which are yearly lighting energy savings using developed process in a building are useful as a part of feasibility study for determination of application of such integrated systems.

  • A new modeling and analysis technique for one-dimensional distributed parameter systems is presented. First. discretized equations of motion in Laplace domain are derived by applying discretization methods for partial differential equations of a one-dimensional structure with respect to spatial coordinate. Secondly. the z and inverse z transformations are applied to the discretized equations of motion for obtaining a dynamic matrix for a uniform element. Four different discretization methods are tested with an example. Finally, taking infinite on the number of step for a uniform element leads to an exact dynamic matrix for the uniform element. A generalized modal analysis procedure for eigenvalue analysis and modal expansion is also presented. The resulting element dynamic matrix is tested with a numerical example. Another application example is provided to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, the flow lines as a function of product design as well as the forging process design are explored using typical application examples. The prediction of flow lines using metal forming simulation technology is introduced along with their characterization. Experimental studies have shown that the metal flow lines have a strong influence on the structural rigidity of the final product. In this study we present several typical applications. One example is the case of severely cut metal flow lines during machining, especially in the region where periodic contacting forces are applied. Another example is the case of abnormal distortion of flow lines which can cause too much elongation or hot shortness due to viscous heating in the region of distortion. A third example is the case of a macrosegregation region which needs to be controlled so it is not adjacent to the region where the force is applied in the use of the final component. An example of weight reduction for an automobile component with improved flow lines is also introduced. These typical applications can provide process engineers with the insight in designing automobile or mechanical components as well as in designing the manufacturing methods to produce various parts.

  • Progressive addition lenses (PAL) have very wide application in the modern glasses market. The unique progressive surface can make a lens have progressive refractive power, which can meet the human eye's different needs for distance-vision and near-vision. According to the national glasses fabrication standard, the difference between actual optical power after fabrication and nominal design value should be less than 0.1D over the lens effective area. The optical power distribution of PAL is determined directly by the surface. Consequently, the surface processing accuracy requirement is proposed. Beginning from the surface expressions of progressive addition lenses, the relationship equations between the surface sag and optical power distribution are derived. They are demonstrated through tolerance analysis and test of an example progressive addition lens with addition of 2.09D (5.46D-7.55D). The example addition surface is fabricated under given accuracy by a single-point diamond ultra-precision machine. The optical power of the PAL example is tested with a focal-meter after fabrication. The optical power addition difference between test result and design nominal value is 0.09D, which is less than 0.1D. The derived relationship between the surface error and optical power is verified from the PAL example simulation and test result. It can provide theoretical tolerance analysis proof for the PAL surface fabricating process.

  • This paper studies six different AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) approaches and suggests that the features of the approaches are classified by application circumstances in order to contribute to the applicability and quality usage of the AHP. Our study investigates the hierarchical principles and characteristics of the AHP, and historical debates on the AHP evaluation in which the six approaches have been involved. One of six approaches is an ANP (Analytic Network Process) application that is directly connected to AHP usage. The application differences among the six approaches are validated with a plain example. Then, the four circumstances of AHP applications are classified by two dimensions: the first dimension is whether or not the importance (weights) of criteria is independent of restrictively setting alternatives, and the second dimension is whether or not preference (priorities) of alternatives is independent of adding alternative(s) to or removing alternative(s) from the considering set of alternatives. Then featuring way of weighting criteria is classified. We suggest the distinguishing manners and describe the implications of the AHP application. Finally, we discuss rank reversal and multiplicative AHP.

  • The aim of this paper is to prove a common fixed point theorem in normed linear spaces for discontinuous, occasionally weakly biased mappings without assuming completeness of the space. We give an example to illustrare our theorem. We also give an application of our theorem to best approximation theory. Our theorem improve the results of Gregus [9], Jungck [12], Pathak, Cho and Kang [22], Sharma and Deshpande [26]-[28].

  • This paper presents a new clustering algorithm called FCM algorithm for the design of fuzzy controller. FCM is an extended version of FCM(Fuzzy c-Means) algorithm and can estimate the number of clusters automatically and give membership grades $u_{ik}$ suitable for making fuzzy control rules. This paper also shows an example of its application to the line pursuit control of a car.

  • A Seismic retrofit idea based on a first principle is proposed for existing RC walls under various level of axial loading. In application of the proposed retrofit method, designers can choose the size and shape of boundary elements of wall sections for a required level of ductility. For this axial load ratio, steel ratio, and strength of concrete and steel are considered as design parameters. In order to show the usage of the idea, several design charts are presented with an application example.
