  • This study investigates the effects of appearance management behaviors on job search efficacy among female college students. Based on previous studies on appearance management behaviors and job search efficacy, the questionnaire items were developed. For the study, we conducted a questionnaire survey among 312 students from women's university in Seoul. The statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 23. The results were as follows. First, three types of appearance management factors have been identified: 'fashion & hair,' 'skin care & plastic surgery,' and 'body shape'; the reliability and validity of these factors were proved. Second, the appearance management behavior of female college students found to have a partially significant effect on job search efficacy: fashion & hair factor had a positive effect on job search strength; fashion & hair factor and body shape factor had a positive effect on job search skills. While skin care & plastic surgery factor had a negative effect on job search strength and job search skill. Third, between academic years, there were differences in job search efficacy but not in appearance management behavior. By majors, there were differences among skin care & plastic surgery factor, body shape factor, and job search strength factor. These results suggest that to improve the job search efficacy, proper appearance management through fashion and hair, and body shape management is necessary. In addition, it suggests that it is important to improve the effectiveness of employment by establishing the appearance management strategy that matches the characteristics of each major.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of appearance stress and appearance management behavior on job-seeking stress among male university students. Methods: The participants of this cross-sectional and descriptive study were 158 male students attending a university in K Province who completed a self-report structured questionnaire. The survey period was from September 19th to November 9th, 2017. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation and multiple linear regression analyses with the SPSS statistics 23 program. Results: Job-seeking stress showed significant differences according to BMI (F=2.55, p=.042) and pocket money (F=3.08, p=.049). The results of the regression analysis showed that grade (${\beta}=8.93$, p=.008), pocket money (${\beta}=-5.11$, p=.029), appearance stress (${\beta}=.52$, p<.001), and appearance management behavior (${\beta}=.25$, p=.001) were significant factors affecting jog search stress. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that variables such as grade, pocket money, appearance stress, and appearance management behavior significantly explain job-seeking stress among male students in college. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program to reduce job-seeking stress for senior male students who are preparing for employment before graduation. In addition, when organizing a program to reduce job-seeking for male university students, it is necessary to help them have a more positive evaluation of their appearance and pursue proper appearance management behaviors.

The sampling method was a convenient sampling of 190 male and 160 female students in Daejeon. The survey was conducted from June to July 2008. The instruments consisted of perceptual body image (Silhouette Task), appearance management behavior (need for plastic surgery and appearance management in ordinary times) and clothing behavior (interest in clothing and fashion, along with conformity and exhibition). The data were analyzed using the frequency analysis, $Cronbach'{\alpha}$, factor analysis, t-test, and variance analysis. The subjects with normal body size perceptions had a strong need for plastic surgery, revealed more appearance management behavior, and had a high interest in clothing. The subjects who were dissatisfied with body apperance showed high conformity to clothing. The subjects who dissatisfied to their too fat body had high needs for plastic surgery and the subjects dissatisfied with a too thin body type did less appearance management in ordinary times. The subjects who had a high need for plastic surgery performed more appearance management, had a high interest in clothing and fashion, showed a high conformity to clothing, and exhibited a high exhibition of clothing. • The purpose of this study is to identify conceptual constructs of well-being consciousness and appearance management behaviors, and to examine the effects of these two variables on attitudes toward Korean herbal cosmetics for Korean and Japanese consumers. A survey was carried out among female consumers between the ages of 20 and 50, and a total of 500 responses were analyzed by descriptive analysis, reliability test, t-test, and confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling and multi group analysis. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The result of CFA and the reliability test on well-being consciousness and appearance management of Korean and Japanese respondents clearly showed factorial structures on each of the variant assessments. 2) In regards to the well-being consciousness, Korean and Japanese respondents highly tended to perceive well-being as a benefit to the physical health and an eco-friendly lifestyle respectively. In the area of appearance management, Korean and Japanese respondents had similar patterns that showed high scores of skin care and weight control. Both Korean and Japanese consumers showed favorable attitudes toward Korean herbal cosmetic products. 3) The consumers' well-being consciousness revealed to have positive influences on appearance management behavior. Both well-being consciousness and appearance management positively influenced attitudes toward Korean herbal cosmetics. 4) As a result of MGA, the well-being consciousness had more positive impacts on Korean respondents' attitudes toward Korean herbal cosmetics than the appearance management variable when compared to the Japanese respondents. On the other hand, appearance management had more positive impacts on Japanese respondents' attitudes to-ward Korean herbal cosmetics than well-being consciousness when compared to the Korean respondents. These results suggest that differentiated marketing strategies for Korean herbal cosmetics are crucial when targeting Korean and Japanese consumers.
