  • In this work, we present the classical formulation for the antiplane problem of a eletro-viscoelastic materialswith total sliprate dependent friction and write the corresponding variational formulation. In the second step, we prove that the solution converges to the solution of the corresponding electro-elastic problem as the viscosity converges to zero.

  • An analytical methodology for solving antiplane problem of anisotropic materials is proposed and discussed in detail in this study. The material considered in this study possesses a symmetry plane at z=0. The relationship between the problems of anisotropic materials and the corresponding isotropic problems are established by Ma (1996) on the basis of the general solutions for the shear stresses and displacement in both the polar and Cartesian coordinate systems. This implies that any solution of an anisotropic problem can be obtained by solving a corresponding isotropic problem. In this study some examples and numerical results are presented as an explanation of how the complicated anisotropic problem could be solved by the associated simpler isotropic problem.

  • The purpose of this paper is to consider the disk failure phenomenon based on the second kind Fredholm integral equation and numerical inversion of Laplace transform when the head hit disk asperities at HDI under antiplane impact loading. The model for analysis is a two layeered half-space with a circumferential surface edge crack. The optimum design parameters to reduce the disk failure due to impact are presented

  • In this study, we analyze the problem of wedge cracks, which are geometrically unsymmetrical in transversely piezoelectric materials. A single concentrated antiplane mechanical load and inplane electrical load are applied at the point of the wedge surface, while one concentrated antiplane load is applied at the crack surface. The crack surfaces are considered as permeable thin slits, where both the normal component of electric displacement and the electric potential are assumed to be continuous across these slits. Using Mellin transform method, the problem is formulated and the Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving the equation, the solution is obtained in a closed form. The intensity factors of the stress and the electric displacement are obtained for any crack length as well as inclined and wedge angles. Based on the results, the intensity factors are independent of the applied electric loads. The electric displacement intensity factor is always dependent on that of stress intensity factor, while the electric field intensity factor is zero. In addition, the energy release rate is computed. These solutions can be used as fundamental solutions which can be superposed to arbitrary electromechanical loadings.

  • The occurrence of an inclined edge crack in transversely piezoelectric material is analyzed. Concentrated antiplane mechanical and inplane electrical loads are applied at the boundary and crack surface, respectively. The crack surfaces are assumed to be impermeable to the electric field. Using the Mellin transform with the introduction of a generalized displacement vector, the problem is formulated, and the Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving the equation, the solution is obtained in a closed form. The intensity factors of the stress, the electric displacement, and the energy release rate are obtained for any crack length and inclination angle. These solutions can be used as fundamental solutions and can be superimposed to represent any arbitrary electromechanical loading.

  • This paper investigates some general properties in the degenerate scale problem of antiplane elasticity or Laplace equation. For a given configuration, the degenerate scale problem is solved by using conformal mapping technique, or by using the null field BIE (boundary integral equation) numerically. After solving the problem, we can define and evaluate the degenerate area which is defined by the area enclosed by the contour in the degenerate configuration. It is found that the degenerate area is an important parameter in the problem. After using the conformal mapping, the degenerate area can be easily evaluated. The degenerate area for many configurations, from triangle, quadrilles and N-gon configuration are evaluated numerically. Most properties studied can only be found by numerical computation. The investigated properties provide a deeper understanding for the degenerate scale problem.

  • The paper deals with the interaction between three Griffith cracks propagating under antiplane shear stress at the interface of two dissimilar infinite elastic half-spaces. The Fourier transform technique is used to reduce the elastodynamic problem to the solution of a set of integral equations which has been solved by using the finite Hilbert transform technique and Cooke’s result. The analytical expressions for the stress intensity factors at the crack tips are obtained. Numerical values of the interaction efect have been computed for and results show that interaction effects are either shielding or amplification depending on the location of each crack with respect to other and crack tip spacing. • A solution is given for the elastodynamic problem of a crack perpendicular to the graded interfacial zone in bonded materials under the action of anti plane shear impact. The interfacial zone is modeled as a nonhomogeneous interlayer with the power-law variations of its shear modulus and mass density between the two dissimilar, homogeneous half-planes. Laplace and Fourier integral transforms are employed to reduce the transient problem to the solution of a Cauchy-type singular integral equation in the Laplace transform domain. Via the numerical inversion of the Laplace transforms, the values of the dynamic stress intensity factors are obtained as a function of time. As a result, the influences of material and geometric parameters of the bonded media on the overshoot characteristics of the dynamic stress intensities are discussed. A comparison is also made with the corresponding elastostatic solutions, addressing the inertia effect on the dynamic load transfer to the crack tips for various combinations of the physical properties.

  • Surface edge crack in transversely isotropic piezoelectric material is analyzed. The concentrated antiplane mechanical and inplane electrical loadings are applied to an arbitrary point of the surface, where the impermeable crack boundary condition is imposed. Using Mellin transform the problem is formulated, from which Wiener-Hopf equations are derived. By solving the equations the solution is obtained in a closed form. Mechanical and electric intensity factors and energy release rate are obtained and discussed. This problem could be used as a Green's function to generate the solutions of other problems with the same geometry but of different loading conditions.

The general dynamic stress fields and displacement fields of mode III are derived when interface crack between isotropic and orthotropic material is propagating with constant velocity. The general dynamic stress fields and displacement fields in isotropic material. Finally, the characteristics of interface crack propagation are studied with various properties of isotropic and orthotropic material and crack propagarion velocities.
