은나노 입자를 함유한 부직포 제조와 항균특성 (Manufacturing and Antibacterial Characteristics of Non-woven Fabrics Including Nano-silver Particles)

  • The functional non-woven fabrics have been applied in various industry fields, such as clothing, hygiene, environment, medical and so forth. The functional non-woven fabrics were manufactured by meltblown and finishing processes. These functional non-woven fabrics were made of 2,000ppm nano-silver resin composite and polypropylene resin. Silver is one of the most universal antimicrobial substances. Nano-technology enables us to expand the surface area of silver particles markedly. Nano-silver particles were successfully produced less than 10nm in size. The functional non-woven fabrics including nano-silver particles showed excellent antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 6538) and Klebsieila pneumoniae (ATCC 4352). From the results, nano-silver particels probably will be available as a good and safe antibiotic alternative.

Design, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Activity of a Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Derived from Bovine Lactophoricin

  • Lactophoricin (LPcin), which is a part of proteose peptone isolated from bovine milk, is a cationic amphipathic ${\alpha}-helical$ antimicrobial peptide. Its truncated variants and mutated analogs were designed and their antimicrobial activities were evaluated by using various assays, like broth dilution methods and disk diffusion methods as well as hemolysis assay. Three analogs, LPcin-C8 (LPcin-YK1), LPcin-T2&6W (LPcin-YK2), and LPcin-T2&6W-C8 (LPcin-YK3), which showed better antibiotic activities than LPcin, were selected. Their secondary structures were also characterized by using CD spectropolarimetry. These three analogs of LPcin could be used as an alternative source of powerful antibacterial agents.

토양길항세균 Bacillus sp. KL-3의 대사산물을 이용한 벼도열병균 Pyricularia oryzae의 생물학적방제

  • Biocontrol of plant pathogens provides an alternative means of reducing the incidence of plant diseases without the negative aspects of chemical pesticides. Nowdays, as the resistant fungi about the chemical fungicides have revealed and the concern of environment has increased, the biological control of phytopathogenic fungi by the antagonistic microorganisms is very much indispensable. For the selection of strong antagonistic bacterium for biological control agent of rice leafblast and cucumber gray mold rot, the antifungal strain KL-3 strain was selected among 120 strains isolated from the rhizosphere soils. And the strain was identified to be a species of Bacillus subtilis or closely related strain. In several biochemical and in vitro antibiosis tests, antifungal substances of Bacillus sp. KL-3 were presumed heat stable, micromolecular antibiotic substances. In vivo test and vinyl house field test, the antifungal substances of Bacillus sp. KL-3 represented excellent biocontrol ability aganist Alternaria mali, Phyricularia oryzae, and Alternaria kikuchiana as well as broad spectrum of other fungi. In particular, Bacillus sp. KL-3 strain showed more predominant activity than some chemical fungicides against fungi shown to resist chemcal fungicides.

Endoscopic treatment of vesicoureteral reflux in pediatric patients

  • Endoscopic treatment is a minimally invasive treatment for managing patients with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). Although several bulking agents have been used for endoscopic treatment, dextranomer/hyaluronic acid is the only bulking agent currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating VUR. Endoscopic treatment of VUR has gained great popularity owing to several obvious benefits, including short operative time, short hospital stay, minimal invasiveness, high efficacy, low complication rate, and reduced cost. Initially, the success rates of endoscopic treatment have been lower than that of open antireflux surgery. However, because injection techniques have been developed, a recent study showed higher success rates of endoscopic treatment than open surgery in the treatment of patients with intermediate- and high-grade VUR. Despite the controversy surrounding its effectiveness, endoscopic treatment is considered a valuable treatment option and viable alternative to long-term antibiotic prophylaxis.

Antibacterial Activity of the Phaeophyta Ecklonia stolonifera on Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

  • In an effort to discover an alternative therapeutic agent against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), several medicinal plants and seaweeds were evaluated for its antibacterial activity against MRSA. A methanolic extract of the Phaeophyta Ecklonia stolonifera exhibited significant antibacterial activity against MRSA. To perform more detailed investigation on antibacterial activity, the methanol extract of E. stolonifera was further fractionated with organic solvents such as hexane, dimethylchloride, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. Among them, the hexane fraction showed the strongest antibacterial activity against MRSA strains with MIC from 500 to $600 {\mu}g/mL$. The fraction also exhibited a bactericidal activity against MRSA, indicating that E. stolonifera contains a bactericidal substance against MRSA.

Cloning, Characterization, and Production of a Novel Lysozyme by Different Expression Hosts

  • Lysozyme is a protein found in egg white, tears, saliva, and other secretions. As a marketable natural alternative to preservatives, lysozyme can act as a natural antibiotic. In this study, we have isolated Bacillus licheniformis TIB320 from soil, which contains a lysozyme gene with various features. We have cloned and expressed the lysozyme in E. coli. The antimicrobial activity of the lysozyme showed that it had a broad antimicrobial spectrum against several standard strains. The lysozyme could maintain efficient activities in a pH range between 3 and 9 and from $20^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. The lysozyme was resistant to pepsin and trypsin to some extent at $40^{\circ}C$. Production of the lysozyme was optimized by using various expression strategies in B. subtilis WB800. The lysozyme from B. licheniformis TIB320 will be promising as a food or feed additive.

새로운 천연 항생물질로서의 항균 펩타이드 (Antimicrobial Peptides as Natural Antibiotic Materials)

  • Antimicrobial peptides are widely used in various organisms as a defense system against infection. The peptides are lethal towards bacteria and fungi, however have minimal toxicity in mammalian and plant cells. In this aspect, it is considered that antimicrobial peptides are new alternative materials for defensing against microbial infection. Here, we describe overall characteristics of antimicrobial peptides based on the mechanism of action, classification of the peptides, report detection/screening methods and chemical/biological production. It is expected that understanding of innate immune system based on antimicrobial peptides tends to develop novel natural antimicrobial agents, which might be applied for defensing pathogenic microorganisms resistant to conventional antibiotics.

Retreatment of failed regenerative endodontic of orthodontically treated immature permanent maxillary central incisor: a case report

  • A revascularization procedure was shown to be the best alternative therapy for immature teeth with necrotic pulp and apical infection. A 12 year old female with a history of trauma to her upper central incisor and a sinus tract was referred for endodontic treatment. She was an active orthodontic patient and had undergone regenerative endodontic treatment for the past 2 years. Clinical examination revealed no response to sensibility, percussion, and palpation tests. The preoperative radiograph showed an open apex and apical rarefaction. The case was diagnosed as previously treated tooth with asymptomatic apical periodontitis. Regenerative endodontic retreatment was performed, and the case was followed for 3 years. Clinical, radiographic, and cone-beam computed tomography follow-up examination revealed an asymptomatic tooth, with evidence of periapical healing and root maturation.

  • Phlegmonous esophagitis must be treated aggressively; therefore, appropriate antibiotic therapy and drainage are critical. Although a conventional surgical approach has been used previously, internal drainage could be another treatment option in light of advances in endoscopic techniques. We report 2 cases in which patients suffering from phlegmonous esophagitis were successfully treated with endoscopic intraluminal drainage and antibiotics.

  • 항생제 사용의 증가와 무분별한 사용으로 인한 항생제 오남용은 항생제 내성균 증가와 더불어 미생물 종의 변화 및 수질환경에 독성물질로써 작용할 수 있다. 특히 항생제는 생물학적 폐수처리 공정에서 미생물에 의한 하 폐수 처리의 효율성 문제를 가져올 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 축산업에서 가장 많이 사용되는 항생제로 조사된 Oxytetracycline(OTC) 항생제가 축산폐수의 생물학적 처리과정에서 질산화와 유기물 제거효율에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 항생제가 축산폐수의 처리효율에 미치는 영향을 살펴보기 위해서 회분식 시험과 $A_2/O$(Anoxic-Anoxic-Oxic) 시스템을 이용하였다. 향후 항생제를 다량 함유하고 있는 축산폐수를 처리할 수 있는 축산폐수처리시스템에 대해서 연구하고자 한다.
