This study proceeded an experiment that can increase such physiological properties of heated radish extract. During the extraction of radish, including the byproduct, an increase in antioxidant properties of radish according the heating temperature was performed. Upon the extracts of radish bark and radish green extract(mucheong), the physiological functionalities and antioxidant activity were investigated. As a result, the color of radish ethanol extract in dependence of heating temperature, showed light brown color at low heating temperature and black color from $150^{\circ}C$. The total polyphenol content significantly increased as a result of heat treatment; 6.7 times and 22 times higher than the control at $110^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$, respectively. DPPH radical scavenging ability and antioxidant property increased with increasing heating temperature; in comparison to heat-treated radish at $110^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$, $IC_{50}$ decreased by 1/22 times. $IC_{50}$ of the control was 23times higher than $150^{\circ}C$ heat treated radish (Control $IC_{50}$:130.305). According to the graph that represents ABTS activity, antioxidant activity increased in dependence of heat treatment likewise to the total polyphenol content and DDPH radical scavenging activity. Upon heat treatment at $150^{\circ}C$, antioxidant activity in consequence of ABTS assay increased 23 times higher than the control.
The aim of the study was to assess the cosmeceutical activity of Pyrus ussuriensis leaves and it is possible that can be used as a cosmetic ingredient for application of cosmetic industries. P. ussurensis leaf was extracted with various solvents including water, 70% ethanol and 60% acetone. In the result of DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) scavenging radical activity, water, ethanol and acetone extract of P. ussuriensis leaf were higher than 70%, 80% and 85% at 50 ppm concentration, respectively. Xanthine oxidase inhibition activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity by P. ussuriensis extract were higher than 30%. In addition, SODlike activity of all extracts showed tendency of the significant increase with the increase of concentration. In the anti-inflammatory test, P. ussuriensis leaf extract inhibited generation of nitric oxide (NO) stimulated by LPS in the macrophage cell line (raw 264.7) after 12 to 24 hours. As above results, P. ussuriensis has a great potential as a cosmeceutical raw material as well as anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory ability.
Mt. Jiri located in the southwestern part of Korea is a treasure trove of wild medicinal plants. More than 1200 species currently classified as herbs are grown or cultivated in the area. Recently, safflower has attracted interest because of its ability to control fine wrinkle formation on the neck. The objective of this study therefore was to determine whether the active ingredient of safflower could be used in the form of an extract to reduce wrinkle formation in individuals aged 30 to 59 years. In particular, this study was aimed at determining the extract’s elastase activity and anti-oxidant effect by using DPPH assay in vitro and evaluating the anti-wrinkle efficacy of different types of safflower extracts in improving fine wrinkles on the neck. This study will provide a basis for future studies to develop safflower extracts using advanced composition technology and contribute to the development of the herbal cosmetics industry.

While searching for useful microorganisms, Saccharomycopsis fibuligera which can be used as cosmetic materials were divided from Jeju island's traditional fermented foods. In this study, blackcurrant extract which contains a large amount of anthocyanin glycosides was fermented with S. fibuligera. HPLC analysis was performed to analyze the components of blackcurrant extract (BE) and fermented blackcurrant fruit extract (FBE). As a result, bio-conversion of delphinidin and cyanidin were able to be identified. In order to verify the anti-oxidant effect of BE and FBE, we investigated radical scavenging ability with DPPH and ABTS. In addition, to confirm anti-inflammatory effect, we investigated inhibition effect of nitric oxide (NO) production on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) - stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages, and inhibition effect of the expression of inflammatory-related proteins (iNOS, COX-2) by western blot analysis. As a result, as FBE has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, we suggest that it might be used as an active ingredient for cosmetics.
Purpose: Aster glehnii (AG) and Aster yomena (AY) are medicinal plants that belong to the family Compositea and grow widely in Korea. Plants in the genus Aster have been used to treat snakebite wounds or bruises in oriental medicine. This study compared the effects of anti-oxidants and anti-adipocyte differentiation according to the species (the aerial parts of AG and AY). Methods: AG and AY were extracted using 70% ethanol (-E) and water (-W) at room temperature. The anti-oxidant activities were measured by total phenol contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), DPPH and $ABTS^+$ assay. In addition, correlation analysis was performed for the anti-oxidant compounds and effect. The level of anti-adipocyte differentiation was assessed using an oil red O assay on pre-adipocytes. Results: AG-W showed higher TPC ($6.92{\mu}g/mL$) and AG-E presented higher TFC ($8.22{\mu}g/mL$) than the other extracts. Furthermore, AG-E exhibited higher radical scavenging activity in the DPPH and $ABTS^+$ assay ($IC_{50}$: 104.88 and $30.06{\mu}g/mL$). In the cytotoxicity assay, AG and AY extracts at concentrations less than $100{\mu}g/mL$ were non toxic. AG-W reduced the lipid accumulation of 3T3-L1 cells significantly after differentiation (70.49%) compared to the other extracts. Conclusion: These results show that the water extract of AG has anti-oxidant effects and reduces the differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells. Therefore, AG has utility as a functional food material for its anti-oxidant activities and ability to prevent lipid accumulation.
Objective : This study was designed to investigate the anti-oxidative potentials to wide the usage of Morus alba L. derived from medicinal herbs on cosmoceutical fields. Methods : Anti-oxidative potentials were investigated by using several kinds of assays including electron donating ability, and the total contents of phenolic compounds were also measured. In some cases TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) method were used to identify the patterns of phenolics in herbal extracts. Results : Aurones which are sub-types of flavonoids were observed in methanol extract of Mori Cortex Radidus, and total phenolic contents in Mori Cortex Radidus were more than in methanol extracts of Mori Folium and Mori Ramulus. Various kinds of phenolic compounds were observed in chloroform fraction of Mori Cortex Radidus. Conclusion : According to these results, the chloroform fraction of Mori Cortex Radidus could be the most possible resource that has potentials on anti-oxidant agents on cosmoceutical fields.

In histological examination through TTC stain, group I was no change, but group II showed that discolored in the most cortical part. Group III showed that decreased discolor in the cortical part. 4. In immunohistochemistric response of BDNF, group II showed that lower response effect. Group III showed that increase response effect. 5. Treatment of Jujadokseo-hwan increased proliferation rates of Glial cell effectively 6. Treatment of Jujadokseo-hwan accelerated proliferation rates of C6 cells in vitro. In addition, protective effects on cell death induced by paraquat, rotenone and hydrogen peroxide. In addition, activity of SOD were increased by treatment with Jujadokseo-hwan. Conclusions In conclusion, Jujadokseo-hwan can improve of the brain ability, learning ability, memory ability and induce ischemic brain injuries.
The red algae Gracilaria vermiculophylla is widespread on seashores worldwide and has been used as food in Asian countries. Previous studies have reported that extracts of Gracilaria red algae have beneficial anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The present study examined the anti-senescence effects of Gracilaria vermiculophylla extracts (GV-Ex) in replicatively senescent human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs). GV-Ex pretreatment improved the cellular viability of hBM-MSCs that had been injured by oxidative stress. These effects of GV-Ex were confirmed by MTT assay and immunoblot analysis using the apoptotic proteins p53 and cleaved caspase-3. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were examined in long-term cultured Passages 17 (P-17) mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and compared to P-7 MSC. The ROS accumulation was greater in the P-17 than in the P-7. However, these increased ROS levels in the P-17 were decreased significantly after treatment with GV-Ex, and restoration of the levels of the anti-oxidant enzymes SOD1, SOD2, and CAT was also observed under these conditions. In addition, P-17 hBM-MSC treated with GV-Ex had decreased levels of the senescence proteins p53, p21, and p16. The results show that the ability of P-17 hBM-MSC to differentiate into osteocytes and adipocytes was improved by GV-Ex treatment, suggesting that GV-Ex ameliorates the functional decline of senescent stem cells.

Exposure of cells to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation can induce production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cellular components. In addition, these agents can stimulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and decrease collagen synthesis in human skin cells. In this study, we examined the anti-photoaging effects of extracts of Tetraselmis suecica (W-TS). W-TS showed the strongest scavenging activity against 2,2-difenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and peroxyl radicals, followed by superoxide anions from the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system. We observed that the levels of both intracellular ROS and lipid peroxidation significantly increased in UVB-irradiated human skin fibroblast cells. Furthermore, the activities of enzymatic antioxidants (e.g., superoxide dismutase) and the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants (e.g., glutathione) significantly decreased in cells. However, W-TS pretreatment, at the maximum tested concentration, significantly decreased intracellular ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and increased superoxide dismutase and glutathione levels in the cells. At this same concentration, W-TS did not show cytotoxicity. Type 1 procollagen and MMP-1 released were quantified using RT-PCR techniques. The results showed that W-TS protected type 1 procollagen against UVB-induced depletion in fibroblast cells in a dose-dependent manner via inhibition of UVB-induced MMP-1. Taken together, the results of the study suggest that W-TS effectively inhibits UVB-induced photoaging in skin fibroblasts by its strong anti-oxidant ability.
This study was designed to analyze the election donating ability(EDA), superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity, nitrite scavenging ability and xanthine oxidase for food nutritional evaluation and excavation of functional materials in fruits of Elaeagnus multiflora THUNB. The electron donating ability of ethanol extracts in the 1.0 mg/ml concentration of extract was higher in extract of unripe fruits than others. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity was increased according to increasing of the extract concentration. The SOD-like activity was highest in the extract of unripe fruits among the extracts. The nitrite scavenging ability of unripe fruits ethanol extracts in 1.0 mg/ml of extraction solution in pH 1.2 was higher than extract of ripe and Ovenipe fruits. The nitrite scavenging ability was decreased according to increasing of pH. Also, inhibition of xanthine oxidase activity were higher in extracts of unripe fruits than those in extract of ripe and over-ripe fruits.
