  • Extensive work has been done on investigating the inner cell pressure characteristics of sealed type Ni-MH battery in which Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni alloy is used as anode. The inner cell pressure of this type Ni-MH battery much more increases with the charge/discharge cycling than that of the other type Ni-MH battery where commercialized $AB_5$ type alloy is used as anode. The increase of inner cell pressure in the sealed type Ni/MH battery using Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni alloy system is mainly due to the accumulation of oxygen gas during charge/discharge cycling. The accumulation of oxygen gas arises mainly due to the low rate of oxygen recombination on the MH electrode surface during charge/discharge cycling. The difference of oxygen recombination rate between $AB_5$ type electrode and Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni electrode is caused by the difference of electrode reaction surface area resulting from different particle size after their activation and the difference of surface catalytic activity for oxygen recombination reaction, respectively. After EIS analysis, it is identified that the surface catalytic activity affects much more dominantly on the oxygen recombination reaction than the reaction surface area does. In order to suppress the inner cell pressure of Ni-MH battery where Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni is used as anode, it is suggested that the surface catalytic activity for oxygen recombination should be improved.

  • We report on the characteristics of Zr-doped $In_2O_3$ (IZrO) films prepared by DC-RF magnetron cosputtering of $In_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ targets for use as a transparent electrode for high efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). The effect of $ZrO_2$ doping power on electrical, optical, structural, and surface morphology of the IZrO film was investigated in detail. At optimized $ZrO_2$ RF power of 50 W, the IZrO film exhibited a low sheet resistance of 20.71 Ohm/square, and a high optical transmittance of 83.9 %. Furthermore, the OSC with the IZrO anode showed a good cell-performance: fill factor of 61.71 %, short circuit current (Jsc) of $8.484mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.593 V, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.106 %. In particular, the overall OSC characteristics of the cell with the IZrO anode were comparable to those of the OSC with the conventional Sn-doped $In_2O_3$ (FF of 65.03 %, Jsc of $8.833mA/cm^2$, Voc of 0.608 V, PCE of 3.495 %), demonstrating that the IZrO anode is a promising alternative to ITO anode in OSCs.

  • In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of porous silicon/carbon composite anode were investigated to improve the cycle stability and rate performance in lithium ion batteries. In this study, the effect of TEOS and $NH_3$ concentration, mixing speed and temperature on particle size of nano silica was investigated using $St{\ddot{o}}ber$ method. Nano porous Si/C composites were prepared by the fabrication processes including the synthesis of nano $SiO_2$, magnesiothermic reduction of nano $SiO_2$ to obtain nano porous Si by HCl etching, and carbonization of phenolic resin. Also the electrochemical performances of nano porous Si/C composites as the anode were performed by constant current charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved inorganic solvents (EC:DMC:EMC=1:1:1vol%). It is found that the coin cell using nano porous Si/C composite has the capacity of 2,006 mAh/g and the capacity retention ratio was 55.4% after 40 cycle.

  • Tungsten and rhodium target tube for a 40 kV x-ray transmission anode was developed to apply to the hand-held XRF(X-Ray Fluorescence) apparatus and its characteristics were evaluated. From the measurement of the energy distribution and dose of x-ray, it was confirmed that our results were good agreements with the known ones. The optimum thickness of metal film deposited on Be window to extract the maximum dose were $2.6{\mu}m$ and $2.7{\mu}m$ in case of W-target tube and Rh-target tube, respectively. When it was continuously worked during 30 min. at 40 kV in tube voltage and at $60{\mu}A$ in tube current, the temperature at target did not exceed $50^{\circ}C$. Our results reveals that the 40 kV x-ray transmission anode tube can be applied to the hand-held XRF apparatus.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) belong to an ideal material for field emitters because of their superior electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties together with unique geometric features. Several applications of CNTs to field emitters have been demonstrated in electron emission devices such as field emission display (FED), backlight unit (BLU), X-ray source, etc. In this study, we fabricated a CNT cathode by using filtration processes. First, an aqueous CNT solution was prepared by ultrasonically dispersing purified single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) in deionized water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The aqueous CNT solution in a milliliter or even several tens of micro-litters was filtered by an alumina membrane through the vacuum filtration, and an ultra-thin CNT film was formed onto the alumina membrane. Thereafter, the alumina membrane was solvated by acetone, and the floating CNT film was easily transferred to indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrate in an area defined as 1 cm with a film mask. The CNT film was subjected to an activation process with an adhesive roller, erecting the CNTs up to serve as electron emitters. In order to measure their luminance characteristics, an ITO-coated glass substrate having phosphor was employed as an anode plate. Our field emitter array (FEA) was fairly transparent unlike conventional FEAs, which enabled light to emit not only through the anode frontside but also through the cathode backside, where luminace on the cathode backside was higher than that on the anode frontside. Futhermore, we added a reflecting metal layer to cathode or anode side to enhance the luminance of light passing through the other side. In one case, the metal layer was formed onto the bottom face of the cathode substrate and reflected the light back so that light passed only through the anode substrate. In the other case, the reflecting layer coated on the anode substrate made all light go only through the cathode substrate. Among the two cases, the latter showed higher luminance than the former. This study will discuss the morphologies and field emission characteristics of CNT emitters according to the experimental parameters in fabricating the lamps emitting light on the both sides or only on the either side.

  • An investigation upon the characterization of MCMB anodes with different vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) content for application in lithium polymer battery(LPB) was carried out. When VGCF material was used as conducting agent with MCMB active material, the impedance and the initial coulombic efficiency of test cells were found to decrease with the increasing amount of VGCF. On the other hand, as a function of added VGCF the discharge capacity and the utilization linearly with increased. Impedance of test cell with MCMB anode containing $6wt\%$ VGCF exhibited the lowest value whereas the impedance of $8wt\%$ VUF contained anode was similar to that of MCMB anode without VGCF. Interestingly, $6wt\%$ VUF contained anode showed the best battery characteristics. Internal resistance and rate capacity of the cell were. respectively, $0.918{\Omega}\;at\;25C\;and\;93\%$ at 2C. Generally, rate capability and the cycleability of MCMB based test cells with $4\~6wt\%$ VGCF content exhibited better results than the other cells. In the case of $6wt\%$ VGCF containing anode, the discharge capacity of the cell faded slowly with an ultimate charge-discharge cycling capacity of 178mAh/g at the 100th cycle. Thereafter, the discharge capacity faded negligibly and the utilization of the cell at the 100th cycle was more than $90\%$. The effect of addition of VGCF is discussed in detail.

  • Generally, the high energy lithium ion batteries depend intimately on the high capacity of electrode materials. For anode materials, the capacity of commercial graphite is unlike to increase much further due to its lower theoretical capacity of 372 mAhg-1. To improve upon graphite-based negative electrode materials for Li-ion rechargeable batteries, alternative anode materials with higher capacity are needed. Therefore, some metal anodes with high theoretic capacity, such as Si, Sn, Ge, Al, and Sb have been studied extensively. This work focuses on ternary Si-M1-M2 composite system, where M1 is Ge that alloys with Li, which has good cyclability and high specific capacity and M2 is Mo that does not alloy with Li. The Si shows the highest gravimetric capacity (up to 4000mAhg-1 for Li21Si5). Although Si is the most promising of the next generation anodes, it undergoes a large volume change during lithium insertion and extraction. It results in pulverization of the Si and loss of electrical contact between the Si and the current collector during the lithiation and delithiation. Thus, its capacity fades rapidly during cycling. Si thin film is more resistant to fracture than bulk Si because the film is firmly attached to the substrate. Thus, Si film could achieve good cycleability as well as high capacity. To improve the cycle performance of Si, Suzuki et al. prepared two components active (Si)-active(Sn, like Ge) elements film by vacuum deposition, where Sn particles dispersed homogeneously in the Si matrix. This film showed excellent rate capability than pure Si thin film. In this work, second element, Ge shows also high capacity (about 2500mAhg-1 for Li21Ge5) and has good cyclability although it undergoes a large volume change likewise Si. But only Ge does not use the anode due to its costs. Therefore, the electrode should be consisted of moderately Ge contents. Third element, Mo is an element that does not alloys with Li such as Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, V, Zr. In our previous research work, we have fabricated Si-Mo (active-inactive elements) composite negative electrodes by using RF/DC magnetron sputtering method. The electrodes showed excellent cycle characteristics. The Mo-silicide (inert matrix) dispersed homogeneously in the Si matrix and prevents the active material from aggregating. However, the thicker film than $3\;{\mu}m$ with high Mo contents showed poor cycling performance, which was attributed to the internal stress related to thickness. In order to deal with the large volume expansion of Si anode, great efforts were paid on material design. One of the effective ways is to find suitably three-elements (Si-Ge-Mo) contents. In this study, the Si based composites of 45~65 Si at.% and 23~43 Ge at.%, and 12~32 Mo at.% are evaluated the electrochemical characteristics and cycle performances as an anode. Results from six different compositions of Si-Ge-Mo are presented compared to only the Si and Ge negative electrodes.

  • The possibility of improving plating thickness distribution was investigated through quantitative consideration of bipolar electrodes without external power applied. By having the cathode tilted with respect to the anode, the potential distribution in the electrolyte solution adjacent to the cathode is different due to the difference in iR drop due to the path difference to the anode in each region of the cathode. The purpose of this study is to observe the bipolar characteristics in the case of an auxiliary anode for the non-uniform potential distribution of such a Hull cell. In particular, in order to evaluate the possibility of improving the non-uniform thickness distribution of the cathode by utilizing these bipolar characteristics, it was verified through experiments and simulations, and the electric potential and current density distribution around the bipolar electrode were analyzed. The electroplating in a Hull cell was performed for 75 min at a current density of 10 mA/cm2, and the average thickness is about 16 ㎛. The standard deviation of the thickness was 10 ㎛ in the normal Hull cell without using the auxiliary anode, whereas it was 3.5 ㎛ in the case of using the auxiliary cathode. Simulation calculations also showed 8.9 ㎛ and 3.3 ㎛ for each condition, and it was found that the consistency between the experimental and simulation results was relatively high, and the thickness distribution could be improved through using the auxiliary anode by the bipolar phenomenon.

  • In this study, the molecular weight controlled pitches derived from pyrolyzed fuel oil (PFO) were prepared using solvent extraction and were carbonized. Electrochemical characteristics of lithium battery anode materials were investigated using these petroleum pitches. Three pitch samples prepared by the thermal reaction were 3903 (at $390^{\circ}C$ for 3 h), 4001 (at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h) and 4002 (at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h). The prepared hexane insoluble pitches were analysed by XRD, TGA, SEM and Gel permeation Chromatography (GPC). The electrochemical characteristics of the PFO-derived pitch as an anode material were investigated by constant current charge/discharge, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests. The coin cell using pitch (4001) and the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ in organic solvents (EC : DMC = 1 : 1 vol%, VC 3 wt%) has better initial capacity (310 mAh/g) than that of other pitch coin cells. Also, this carbon anode showd a high initial efficiency of 82%, retention rate capability at 2 C/0.1 C of 90% and cycle retention of 85%. It was found that modified pitches improved the cycling and rate capacity performance.

  • Currently graphite is used as an anode active material for lithium ion battery. However, since the maximum theoretical capacity of graphite is limited to $372mA\;h\;g^{-1}$, a new anode active material is required for the development of next generation high capacity and high energy density lithium ion battery. The maximum theoretical capacity of Si is $4200mA\;h\;g^{-1}$, which is about 10 times higher than the maximum theoretical capacity of graphite. However, since the volume expansion rate is almost 400%, the irreversible capacity increases as the cycle progresses and the discharge capacity relative to the charge is remarkably reduced. In order to solve these problems, it is possible to control the particle size of the Si anode active material to reduce the mechanical stress and the volume change of the reaction phase, thereby improving the cycle characteristics. Therefore, in order to minimize the decrease of the charge / discharge capacity according to the volume expansion rate of the Si particles, the improvement of the cycle characteristics was carried out by pulverizing Si by a dry method with excellent processing time and cost. In this paper, Si is controlled to nano size using vibrating mill and the physicochemical and electrochemical characteristics of the material are measured according to experimental variables.
