  • The aqueous solution of Sunset Yellow-FCF (SY-FCF) began to show schlieren texture at room temperature when its concentration reaches 25 wt%. A further increase of the concentration of SY-FCF to 28 wt% resulted in a perfect nematic liquid crystal phase. However, more than 30 wt% of SY-FCF in aqueous solution was required to make an optically anisotropic film simply by shear coating. In our study, concentration of SY-FCF solution, coating speed, drying temperature, and relative humidity were considered as coating parameters affecting the preparation of optically anisotropic thin films. From analysis of variance analysis (ANOVA), the solution concentration was revealed as a main factor affecting the film thickness. The drying temperature and solution concentration were main factors affecting the transmittance of parallel direction ($T_o$). Especially, SY-FCF aqueous solution with high concentration induced a better alignment of LC columns and produced highly oriented anisotropic films. In this study, optically anisotropic films prepared by 33 wt% of SY-FCF in aqueous solution showed 89.7~98.7% of degree of polarization.

  • The problem of an infinite anisotropic material with a crack inclined with respect to the principal material axes is analyzed. The material is subjected to uniform biaxial load along its boundary. It is assumed that the material is homogeneous, but anisotropic. By considering the effect of the horizontal load, the distribution of stresses at the crack tip is analyzed. The problem of predicting critical stress in anisotropic solids which is a subject of considerable practical importance is examined and the effect of load biaxiality is made explicitly. The present results based on the normal stress ratio theory show significant effects of biaxial load, crack inclination angle and fiber orientation on the critical stress. The analysis is performed for a wide range of the crack angles and biaxial loads.

  • In designing reluctance motor, it is important to know the flux distribution of the inside of the motor. The reluctance motor which has axially laminated anisotropic(a.l.a.) rotor was proved to have high efficiency. To analyze this motor, it needs to consider the anisotropic characteristic of the rotor. This paper shows the flux distribution of the a.l.a. reluctance motor by finite element method (FEM) considering the anisotropic characteristic and the saturation of the core. And this paper shows the static torque for the variation of the stator dimension. This will be helpful to design the a.l.a. switched reluctance motor.

  • In order to describe the mechanical behavior of highly anisotropic and asymmetric materials such as fiberreinforced composites, the elastic-plastic constitutive equations were used here based on the recently developed yield criterion and hardening laws. As for the yield criterion, modified Drucker-Prager yield surface was used to represent the orthotropic and asymetric properties of composite materials, while the anisotropic evolution of backstress was accounted for the hardening behavior. Experimental procedures to obtain the material parameters of the hardening laws and yield surface are presented for 3D Circular Braided Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites. For verification purpose, comparisons of finite element simulations using the elastic-plastic constitutive equations, anisotropic elastic constitutive equations and experiments were performed for the three point bending tests. The results of finite element simulations showed good agreements with experiments, especially for the elastic-plastic constitutive equations with yield criterion considering anisotropy as well as asymmetry and anisotropic back stress evolution rule.

  • Fractures in the form of micro cracks are commonly found in natural rocks. A rock behaves in a complex way due to fracture; in particular, the anisotropic strength of a rock material is significantly influenced by the presence of these fractures. Therefore, it is essential to understand the failure mechanism of a fractured rock. In this study, a fractured rock is formulated in terms of fabric tensor based on geometric and mechanical simplifications. In this way, position, density and shape of fractures can be determined by the fabric tensor so that rocks containing multi-fractures can successfully be modeled. Also an index to evaluate the degree of anisotropy of a fractured rock is proposed. Hence, anisotropic strength of a rock containing fractures under uniaxial compression condition is estimated through a series of numerical analyses for the multi-fractured model. Numerical investigations are carried out by varying the fracture angle from $0^{\circ}\;to\;90^{\circ}$ and relationship between uniaxial compression strength and the degree of anisotropy is investigated. By comparing anisotropic strength of numerical analysis with analytic solution, this study attempts to understand the failure mechanism of rock containing fractures.

  • Various laminates consisting of thin, unidirectional layers may be achieved by laying up laminae in different reinforcement directions and stacking sequences. Thus, the behavior of nonhomogeneous, anisotropic laminated structures is quite different from that of isotropic ones. The anisotropic laminated shell theory derived here, that includes the effect of transverse shear deformations, can give higher accuracy than thin shell theories. In this paper, by using closed-form solutions for shallow shells having simple supported boundary, extensive numerical study for anisotropic laminated shells were made to investigate the stacking sequence effects for various shells, and to show comparisons to the results between this paper and the existing literature.

  • The planar anisotropic FEM analysis for predicting the earing profiles and draw-in amounts in the deep-drawing processes is introduced. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation with a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive equation is employed. Contact and friction are considered through the mesh-based unit vectors and the normal contact pressure. the consistent full set of governing relations, comprising equilibrium and geometric constraint equations, is appropriately linearized. Barlat's strain-rate potential is employed, whose in-plane anisotropic properties are taken into account with anisotropic coefficients and potential parameter. The linear triangular membrane elements are used for depicting the formed sheet. with the numerical simulations of deep drawing processes of flat-top cylindrical cup for the 2090-T3 aluminum effects on the earing behavior are examined. Earing predictions made for the 2090-T3 aluminum alloy sheet show good agreement with experiments, although some discrepancies were observed in the directional trend of cup height and thickness strains.

  • The V-notched crack problem in dissimilar materials can be formulated as an eigenvalue problem. The RWCIM(Reciprocal Work Contour Integral Method) is applied to the determination of the eigenvector coefficients associated with eigenvalues for V-notched cracks in pseudo-isotropic and anisotropic dissimilar materials. The RWCIM algorithm is programed by the commercial numerical program, MATHEMATICA. The numerical results obtained are shown that the RWCIM is a useful method for determining the eigenvector coefficients of V-notched cracks in pseudo-isotropic and anisotropic dissimilar materials.
