A Study on the Efficiency & Limitation of 3D Animation Production Management Using Production Management Tool - Focusing on Shotgun Software & Ftrack (3D 애니메이션 제작 관리를 위한 제작관리도구(Tool)의 효율성 및 한계 - 샷건(Shotgun)과 Ftrack(에프트랙)을 중심으로)

  • 3D animation production has had a pivotal position in current animation industry and the necessity of professional management tool for 3D animation production has claimed due to its sophisticated pipeline from advance of technology and global production partnership trend. Shotgun and Ftrack are providing the most appropriate management toolset for 3D animation management among the extant management tools and the efficiency of Shotgun & Ftrack is identified compared with the traditional document oriented management style. The biggest strength of production management using Shotgun is that all of the production staff can directly participate in the communication on the tools therefore they can share the information on Shotgun & Ftrack in real time without constraint of time and location. Moreover, all the process of the production and the history of the discussion on certain production issues are systematically accrue on the tool so that the production history can be easily tracked. Finally, the production management using tools contributes collecting and analysing the production information for the production management team in studios. However, Shotgun & Ftrack has metadata based retrieval method which cost huge amount of effort by human's manual annotation and it also has the limitation of accuracy. In addition, the fact that studios has to have technical professionals first in order to institute the tools into their studios is the actual difficulty of Korean studios when they want to use management tools for their project. Thus, this paper suggests adopting the content-based retrieval system on the tools and tools' expanded technical service for the studios as the solution of the identified issues.

Animation Generation for Chinese Character Learning on Mobile Devices (모바일 한자 학습 애니메이션 생성)

  • There are many difficulties to develop a mobile contents due to many constraints on mobile environments. It is difficult to make a good mobile contents with only visual reduction of existing contents on wire Internet. Therefore, it is essential to devise the data representation and to develop the authoring tool to meet the needs of the mobile contents market. We suggest the compact mobile contents to learn Chinese characters and developed its authoring tool. The animation which our system produces is realistic as if someone writes letters with pen or brush. Moreover, our authoring tool makes a user generate a Chinese character animation easily and rapidly although she or he has not many knowledge in computer graphics, mobile programming or Chinese characters. The method to generate the stroke animation is following: We take basic character shape information represented with several contours from TTF(TrueType Font) and get the information for the stroke segmentation and stroke ordering from simple user input. And then, we decompose whole character shape into some strokes by using polygonal approximation technique. Next, the stroke animation for each stroke is automatically generated by the scan line algorithm ordered by the stroke direction. Finally, the ordered scan lines are compressed into some integers by reducing coordinate redundancy As a result, the stroke animation of our system is even smaller than GIF animation. Our method can be extended to rendering and animation of Hangul or general 2D shape based on vector graphics. We have the plan to find the method to automate the stroke segmentation and ordering without user input.

  • As the animation prevails through the public recently, animation fields editing and creating greatly have attention and get into the spotlight. Nevertheless, such solutions in LINUX environment tend to be worse than those in Windows. In this paper, we propose Motion Space Prime in LINUX, which is capable of creating stop motion animation easily such as clay animation. Users can interactively edit motions captured by a digital camcorder.

Unity: A Powerful Tool for 3D Computer Animation Production

  • Unity is a powerful game engine that can be used to create 2D or 3D content. The current study focuses on the use of Unity for 3D computer animations, covering the strengths, basic concepts and tools for creating and integrating 3D animations in Unity, including the use of keyframe animation, animation controllers, and blend trees. Also covering advanced topics such as skeletal animation, procedural animation and their applications in games, simulations, and other interactive media. Case studies that showcase the potential of Unity for 3D animation will be analyzed and discussed taking in the quality of visuals and the receptance by the public in general.

  • This paper presents a semi-autonomous authoring method which can intuitively create 3D game/ animation contents for unexperienced users. In particular, this method considers their convenience to provide them with easier authoring environments. The 3D game/animation contents created by this method consist of several scene components connected to each other in a logical flow structure. Thus, it is possible to easily understand the overview of 3D content description for its production and manipulate these scene components for efficient management. Four different genres of game/animation contents have been developed by using an authoring tool based on this method. According to results of a survey intended for game developers who created game contents with the authoring tool, this method is shown to save contents development cost/time as well as raise the efficiency and convenience of whole process of contents creation to the expected level.

  • Domestic kids TV animation industry is settled well in domestic animation industry by adding both entertainment value and educational value. Specially, the character that represents various rolls in the kids TV animation is the core visual element. This study is the analysis for character's subject matter of expression. For this, I established the tool which could classify character's subject matter of expression, and apply the tool to the character which were selected in broadcasting kids TV animations on EBS. Through this procedure, I analyzed character's subject matter of expression with the distribution chart as the final step. In addition, I hope the result of this study could intend to provide the index of the character creation in the kids TV animation and also informed the current situation about the character's subject matter of expression in the kids TV animation.

  • Since 2005, the production of feature 3D animation has been growing up worldwide and technology of hardware and software has been advanced fully enough to get over the limitation of visual expression, so that rendering weight of the whole work process is getting more important. A final file in the state right before rendering increases. the data size gets bigger. Therefore, if such final file is rendered as it is, the production schedule may not be met. For, some needless time shall be spent to call and save a high-capacity file in amendment work and to execute the rendering entirely again in addition to amendment. In this study, Maya API [1]was used to study the efficient information amendment method of extracting the rendering layers' files in order to develop a tool that executes rendering by applying such method. As the result, compliance to production schedule that is important in animation production can be done through the independent rendering tool based layer rendering that can maximize the efficiency of amendment work.

  • If one can easily modify the existing motion data to a new motion in making an animation movie, he can save a lot of time for graphic design. To implement this kind of system, we propose a PC-based system composed of low cost commercial animation tool (3D Studio Max) for visualization of the animation and motion editing module that handles optimization process during the motion transform.   • With the increasingly diverse, sophisticated and complex character animations that can be represented in 3D animations, the importance of rigging, which can most directly affect animating quality, is becoming more and more important. In addition, rapidity is another crucial aspect of 3D animation production. So, the importance of technical director's role which is accurate and rapid handling of rigging pipeline building and immediate application and, corrections of errors during the longest and manpower consuming animation production is more becoming key. Baek Ji Won and Kim Jae-woong (2014) said, "The technical director is adding new importance to the new job, which is created by 3D animation, in conjunction with the limited production period, manpower, budget and production process." Most major overseas studios are developing in-house software to handle rigging and animation processes. Software development code is used to freely develop and modify production pipelines in accordance with the direction of the work. They are making efforts to build an optimal environment for animators. However, too many efforts and ineffective efforts have been made to develop, adapt, and stabilize the rigging process for small producers, creators, and students who do not have the capacity to develop their own in-house software or hire a technical director. This study suggests the most suitable auto-rigging tool among the many auto-rigging tools released in the market, and suggests the most accurate and quick auto-rigging process setting method for those who have insufficient knowledge about 3D character rigging. The efficiency of use of auto-rigging tool was examined.

  • There are many issues in computer simulation such as verifying model code, validating models, understanding the dynamics of systems and training the personnel. The developers of simulation tool have been interested in the animation since it can help solve the problems related to the above listed issues. In practice, animation is one of the popular method for displaying the simulation output for solving these problems. Trying to display all the graphic objects representing the dynamics of the models being simulated, however, causes the distraction of focus, which results in solving the above listed problems difficult. The redundant graphic objects also Increase the computer computation overhead. This paper presents a hierarchical animation environment in which the users can have better focus on the dynamics of system components. In hierarchical animation environment the users can observe the dynamics of system by selectively choosing the hierarchical level and components with in a level of the hierarchically structured model. Especially when the model is large and complex the selection of observation level is needed. The design approach of the hierarchical animator is based on the DEVS(Discrete Event system Specification) formalism which is theoretically well grounded means of expressing modular and hierarchical models.
