  • The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art has dominated the history of Chinese mathematics. It served as a textbook not only in China but also in the neighbouring countries and regions. The book is anonymous like many Chinese classics. The Nine Chapters contains 246 problems and their solutions, some of which date back to before the Qin Dynasty $(221\sim207\;B.C)$ and it seems to have been written by various writers over many generations. In this paper, we will investigate the structure of the Nine Chapters from the view points of ancient social environments which entail eventually mathematics in the Nine Chapters.

  • The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the most commonly repeated misconceptions on the history of mathematics described in the secondary school mathematics textbooks, and recommend that we should include mathematical transculture in the secondary school mathematics. School mathematical history described in the texts reflects the axial age, and deals with mathematical transculture from the ancient Greek into Europe excluding the ancient Egypt, Old Babylonia, and Islamic mathematics. We discuss about them through out the secondary school textbooks and give some alternatives for the historical problems.

  • DNA extracted from ancient bones of Cervidae animals was examined to identify the species and to determine the phylogenetic relationships to those from extant cervids. Abundant ancient bones were excavated from Kumsung archaeological site in Jeju Island, Korea, and were identified as Cervidae animals based on morphological features of their antlers and lower mandibles. Their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (CR) was partially sequenced and subsequently compared with those previously reported in database. The results confirmed that the ancient sequences are lineage of Cervidae. On the phylogenetic trees constructed using the sequence diversity of the CR sequences of family Cervidae, the ancient DNA sequences were found on distinct clusters. The ancient sequences were located in the subfamily Capreolinae cluster, and six ancient sequences were closely related to those of extant Korean roe deer in Jeju Island and Korean Peninsula. Consequently, the results of this study suggest that the roe deer inhabited Jeju Island in ancient times. However, there is no evidence for the existence of subfamily Cervinae, including Sika deer, while it has been described in several historical records. The results suggest that this finding could contribute to understanding of the origin and phylogenetic relationships of extant and ancient roe deer on Jeju Island.

  • In the ancient times, the medical practice relied primarily upon human instincts and experiences at the same time, shaman's incantations were widely believed to cure diseases, the workings of evil spirits supposedly. For the period from the Old Chosun through Samhan(三韓), Chinese refugees brought a long medical knowledge and skills of the continent. New Chinese medicine, traditional practices and incantations were generally used at this time. In Samhan, however, the last was the most important, performed by a Chongoon(天君). Medicine and the medical system were arranged by the period of the Three Countries(三國時代). No definite record concerning Koguryo remains now. As for Paekje, however, history shows that they set up the system under the Chinese influence, assigning medical posts such as Euibaksa(醫博士, medical doctor), Chaeyaksa(採藥師, pharmacist), and Jukeumsa(呪禁師, medicine man) within Yakbu(藥部, department of medicine). Scientifically advanced, they sent experts to Japan, giving a tremendous influence on the development of the science in ancient Japan. After the unification of the three countries, Shilla(新羅) had theri own system after the model of Dang(唐). This system of the Unified Shilla was continued down to Koryo(高麗) and became the backbone of the future ones.

  • The Altamira Cave painting which Spain which is a world-wide cave painting will know, France Grotte de Lascaux painting, observes the France Chauvet Cave and sees and about Choungryongdo with the Sangyoungchong which are an ancient tomb mural of Korea introduces. This paper provides an overview of the rock art of the Northern Mariana Islands and particularly as the rock art discovered to date predominantly pertains to ancestor worship within the Chamorro cultural group. For centuries, the Western world has categorized the ancient Chamorro inhabitants of the Marianas Archipelago as a "prehistoric" people; a people without a written history. In addition to providing an overview of the rock art of the Northern Mariana Islands, this paper also emphasizes the fact that the ancient Chamorros did indeed have a recorded history and that this chronological record exists in the pictographs and petroglyphs that they painted and carved.

  • About twenty ancient reservoirs in Korea have been the subjects of the archaeological investigation. Some of them have been still remained today, but among them, only Byeokgolje of Gimje city(金堤碧骨堤) and Cheongje of Yeongcheon(永川菁堤) have been verified when they were constructed. According to the investigation, the first reservoir in Korea is Jeojeons-ri reservoir of Andong city(安東 苧田里 貯水池). The aim of this study is investigating the reservoirs by their historical values to preserve and utilize them.

  • The ancient Egyptians only used fractions of the form 1/n, so any other fraction had to be represented as a sum of such unit fractions and all the unit fractions were different. This study explores some of the history of Egyptian fractions and gives you an algorithm for such representations. There's lots of investigations to do in this area of mathematics suitable for elementary school students and it is also designed as a resource for teachers.

  • We first seek a principle of cognitive development processes by reviewing and summarizing Piaget's cognitive development theory, constructivism and Dubinsky's APOS theory, and also the epistemology on logics of 墨子 and 荀子. We investigate Chapter 8 方程 on the theory of systems of linear equations, of the Nine Chapters, one of the oldest ancient Asian mathematical books, from the viewpoint of our principle of cognitive development processes. We conclude the educational value of the chapter and the value of the research on Asian ancient mathematical works and heritages.
