  • The study is actively being performed to increase fuel injection pressure of common rail system among countermeasures to meet the emission regulation strengthen of the Diesel engine. The common rail fuel injection tube in such ultra high pressure common rail system has the weakest structural characteristics against vibration that is generated by fuel injection pressure and pulsation during engine operation and driving. Thus the extreme durability is required for common rail fuel injection tube, and the drawing process is being magnified as the most important technical fact for strength of seamless pipe that is the raw material of common rail tube. In this respect, we analyzed the characteristic of dimension and stress variation of the ultra high pressure common rail fuel injection tube by variation of Die and Plug angle in drawing process. Based on the analysis, we tried to obtain the raw material strength of common rail fuel injection tube for applying to the ultra high pressure common rail system. As a result, Plug angle is more important than entry angle of Die and we could obtain the target dimension and strength of the ultra high pressure common rail fuel injection tube through optimization of Plug angle.

  • $CO_2$ emission is increasingly focused by public. Beijing and Tianjin are conceived to be a new economic point of growth in China. However, both of them are suffering serious environmental stress. In order to seek for the effect of socioeconomic factors on the $CO_2$ emission of this region, a novel methodology -symbolic regression- is adopted to investigate the relationship between $CO_2$ emission and influential factors of Beijing and Tianjin. Based on this method, $CO_2$ emission models of Beijing and Tianjin are built respectively. The models results manifested that Beijing and Tianjin own different $CO_2$ emission indicators. The RMSE of models in Beijing and Tianjin are 255.39 and 603.99, respectively. Further analysis on indicators and forecast trend shows that $CO_2$ emission of Beijing expresses an inverted-U shaped curve, whilst Tianjin owns a monotonically increasing trend. From analytical results, it could be argued that the diversity rooted in different development orientation and the mixture of different natural and industrial environment. This research further expands the investigation on $CO_2$ emission of Beijing and Tianjin region, and can be used for reference in the study of carbon emissions in similar regions. Based on the investigation, several policy suggestions are presented.

  • The behavior of double angle connections is analyzed by 3D finite element method using ABAQUS(ver 5.8). Moment-rotation curves for the connections are generated, as well as stress distribution for angle and bolt. Double angle connections have various angle thickness, gage distance and number of bolt. Parameters, such as initial stiffness, plastic tiffness, reference load and curve shape parameter were obtained by regression method using Richard's formula. These parameter lead to predict nonlinear behavior of double angle connection. Design curves giving the parameters of the moment-rotation curves are generated. These parameters are primarily a function of the angle thickness, gage distance and the number of bolts in the connection. Using these parameters, connection moment and its ratio to the full plastic moment capacity Mp of the beam are calculated.

  • Ice rubble pieces broken by the bow impact load and side hull of an icebreaking vessel usually pass along the ship's bottom hull and may hit the propeller/rudder or other stern structures causing serious damage to ship's hull . Therefore it is important to estimate the size of broken ice pieces during the icebreaking process. The dynamic interaction process of icebreaker with infinite ice sheet is simplified as a wedge type beam of finite length supported by elastic foundation. The wedge type ice beam is leaded with vertical impact forces due to the inclined bow stem of icebreaking vessels. The numerical model provides locations of maximum dynamic bending moment where extreme tensile stress arises and also possible fracture occurs. The model can predict a failure length of broken ice sheet given design parameters. The results are compared to Nevel(1961)'s analytical solution for static load and observed pattern of ice sheet failure onboard an icebreaker. Also by comparing computed failure length with the characteristic length, the meaning of ice rubble sizes is discussed.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of the hysteresis behavior of reinforced concrete long column with rectangular section under the cyclic loading state. The mechanical characteristic of cracked concrete and reinforcing bar in concrete has been modeled, considering the bond effect between reinforcing bar and concrete, the effect of aggregate interlocking at crack surface and the stiffness degradation after the crack has taken place. The strength increase of concrete due to the lateral confining reinforcement has been also taken into account to model the confined concrete. The formulation of these models for concrete and reinforcing bar has been based on the smeared crack concept that the stress-strain relationship of reinforced concrete element would be defined using the average values. In addition to the material nonlinear properties, the algorithm for large displacement problem that may give an additional deformation has been formulated using total Lagrangian formulation. The analytically predicted behavior was compared with test result and they showed good agreement in overall behavior.

  • The prediction of driving stresses in piles is necessary for optimum selection of driving hammers, better design of precast piles, enact assessment of drivabilities and complete description of piling specifications. However, the existing pile-driving formulas based on the theory of Newtonian impact have some defects and shortcomings; the numerical method by the wave equation analysis using electronic computer usually Involves various uncertainties and limitations which can yield erroneous outcomes because it employs soil constants of which the nature is unknown as essential parameters and ignores the effect of residual stresses set up in the pile .after each hammer blow; and the electronic measuring technique needs extra time and expense. The method developed herein is presented for the purpose of giving field engineers a reliable and convenient analytical procedure for the prediction of driving stresses along the full length of pile using the most effetive parameters without resort to electronic computer. This method is based on the fundamental mechanics of stress waves in elastic rods and takes into account the effect of residual stresses induced by reversed friction in piles.

  • A number of structures constructed during past decades have suffered from safety and serviceability problems due to deterioration and many engineers have been increasingly concerned about durability of concrete. Pipe-cooling method has been popularly used in the massive concrete to reduce temperature of the structure. Until now, usually this pipe-cooling method was applied only in foundation concrete structures, but it is newly tried to apply in the wall structure. We analyzed thermal stress of wall structure with the general structural analysis program that will be able to express the pipe-cooling element. We studied about the effect of reducing temperature and cracking control in the wall structure which can be applied in a pipe-cooling method with the analytical result which follows in an arrangement of the cooling pipe.

  • This paper presents analysis of the interaction between tunnel and Qanat with a particular interest for the optimization of Qanat shape using the discrete element code, PFC2D, and the results will be compared with the FEM results of PLAXIS2D. For these concerns, using software PFC2D based on Discrete Element Method (DEM), a model with dimension of 100m 100 m was prepared. A circular tunnel with dimension of 9 m was situated 20 m below the ground surface. Also one Qanat was situated perpendicularly above the tunnel roof. Distance between Qanat center and ground surface was 8 m. Five different shapes for Qanat were selected i.e., square, semi-circular, vertical ellipse, circular and horizontal ellipse. Confining pressure of 5 MPa was applied to the model. The vertical displacement of balls situated in ground surface was picked up to measure the ground subsidence. Also two measuring circles were situated at the tunnel roof and at the Qanat roof to check the vertical displacements. The properties of the alluvial soil of Tehran city are: γdry=19 (KN/㎥), E= 750 (kg/㎠), ν=0.35, c=0.3(kg/㎠), φ=34°. In order to validate the DEM results, a comparison between the numerical results (obtained in this study) and analytical and field monitoring have been done. The PFC2D results are compared with the FEM results. The results shows that when Qanat has rectangular shape, the tensile stress concentration at the Qanat corners has maximum value while it has minimum value for vertical ellipse shape. The ground subsidence for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. The vertical displacements at the tunnel roof for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. Historical shape of Qante approved the finding of this research.

  • A hierarchical formulation based on p-version of the finite element method for linear elastic axisymmetric stress analysis is presented. This is accomplished by introducing additional nodal variables in the element displacement approximation on the basis of integrals of Legendre polynomials. Since the displacement approximation is hierarchical, the resulting element stiffness matrix and equivalent nodal load vectors are hierarchical also. The merits of the propoosed element are as follow: i) improved conditioning, ii) ease of joining finite elements of different polynomial order, and iii) utilizing previous solutions and computation when attempting a refinement. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency, modeling convenience, robustness and overall superiority of the present formulation. The results obtained from the present formulation are also compared with those available in the literature as well as with the analytical solutions.

  • The material property of the rubber has been studied in order to improve the reliability of the finite element model of a lead rubber bearing (LRB) which is a typical base isolator. Rubber exhibits elastic behaviour even within the large strain range, unlike the general structural material, and has a hyper-elastic characteristics that shows non-linear relationship between load and deformation. This study represents the mechanical characteristics of the rubber by strain energy function in order to develop a finite element (FE) model of LRB. For the study, several strain energy functions were selected and mechanical properties of the rubber were estimated with the energy functions. A finite element model of LRB has been developed by using material properties of rubber and lead which were identified by stress tests. This study estimated the horizontal and vertical force-displacement relationship with the FE model. The adequacy of the FE model was validated by comparing the analytical results with the experimental data.
