In this study, instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to measure the concentrations of about 30 trace elements in airborne particulate (PM2.5) samples at urban area of Daejeon city located in the southwestern region of Korea. An inspection of the measurement data indicates that the distribution patterns of trace elements could clearly distinguish the elements with their concentrations ranging over five orders of magnitude. The mean values for Lu and Dy were found to be the lowest at values of 0.01 and $0.04ng/m^3$, while those for K and Fe showed the highest value of 671 and $653ng/m^3$, respectively. The results of correlation analysis showed that PM2.5 concentrations can exhibit much more enhanced correlations with the elements of earth crustal components. The results of factor analysis further indicated that there are no more than six factors with statistical significance, which may exert dominant roles in regulating the elemental concentration levels in the study area. Enrichment factor analysis supports explicit interpretation of results found by this factor analysis.
Iron-oxide nanopowders were synthesized by a pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) in various ambient gas conditions. SEM measurement indicates that the spherical iron nanoparticles are about 50 nm in diameter. The phase analysis for the produced iron-oxide powders was systematically investigated by using $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectra and the results show that classified phases of $Fe_2O_3$ and $Fe_3O_4$ can be controlled by regulating the oxygen concentration in the mixed gas during the PWE process. A quadrupole line on the center of $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectrum represents the superparamagnetic phase of 12 % from ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ phase.
Environmental monitoring analysis were analyzed for the period from 1988 to 2007 near King Sejong Station. Extreme environment structure behaviors(Marine Biology Lab.) were evaluated using monitoring sensors developed commercial sensors. Also when installing the sensors ambient environment of the King Sejong Station, to analyze the measured data and the comparative behavior of the structure were analyzed. As a environmental monitoring analysis result at King Sejong Station temperature, sensors were installed to withstand about $-25.6^{\circ}C$ or less and 49.5m/s. They were needed that the height of 225.0cm or more to be installed during the installation. For several monitoring sensors used in Antarctic, temperature, snow and strong winds were very sensitive to the atmospheric environment. Quite often a camouflage(animals and humans) would make it necessary to provide housing for monitoring sensors. Therefore, protection system developed for these sensors were to protect the sensors and data logger. Protection system the newly developed, is economical, easy to install even in harsh environments. Based on the measurement result of the one year, consider electrode applicability of the protection system, it was confirmed that the behavior of the structure is also predictable.
In the finite element modelling of long-span cable-stayed bridges, there are a lot of uncertainties brought about by the complex structural configuration, material behaviour, boundary conditions, structural connections, etc. In order to reduce the discrepancies between the theoretical finite element model and the actual static and dynamic behaviour, updating is indispensable after establishment of the finite element model to provide a reliable baseline version for further analysis. Traditional sensitivity-based updating methods cannot support updating based on static and dynamic measurement data at the same time. The finite element model is required in every optimization iteration which limits the efficiency greatly. A convenient but accurate Kriging surrogate model for updating of the finite element model of cable-stayed bridge is proposed. First, a simple cable-stayed bridge is used to verify the method and the updating results of Kriging model are compared with those using the response surface model. Results show that Kriging model has higher accuracy than the response surface model. Then the method is utilized to update the model of a long-span cable-stayed bridge in Hong Kong. The natural frequencies are extracted using various methods from the ambient data collected by the Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System installed on the bridge. The maximum deflection records at two specific locations in the load test form the updating objective function. Finally, the fatigue lives of the structure at two cross sections are calculated with the finite element models before and after updating considering the mean stress effect. Results are compared with those calculated from the strain gauge data for verification.
The corrosion behavior of Cr-N coated steels with different phases (${\alpha}-Cr$, CrN and $Cr_2N$) deposited by cathodic arc deposition on Hl3 steel was investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution at ambient temperature. Potentiodynamic polarization test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were the techniques applied to characterize the corrosion behavior. It was found that the CrN coating had a lower current density from potentiodynamic polarization test than others. The porosity, corresponding to the ratio of the polarization resistance of the uncoated and the coated substrate, was higher in the $Cr_2N$ coating than in the other Cr-N coated steels. EIS measurements showed, for the most of Cr-N coated steels, that the Bode plot presented two time constants. Also, the $Cr_2N$ coating represents the characteristic of Warburg behavior after 72hr of immersion. The coating morphologies were examined in planar view and cross-section by SEM analyses and the results were compared with those of the electrochemical measurement. The CrN coating had a dense, columnar grain-sized microstructure with minor intergranular porosity. From the above results, the CrN coating provided a better corrosion protection than the other Cr-N coated steels.
In the present study effects of SnO$_2$-impregnation on the cell performance of Mesocarbon Microbeads (MCMB) electrode in the Li-ion battery have been investigated. Sn element was impreganted into MCMB powders by the chemical titration, and then post annealed at 250$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in ambient atmosphere to be transformed as tin-oxide. From the measurement for the cell performance with the half cell in which the SnO$_2$-impregnated MCMB was used as an anode, the SnO$_2$-impregnated MCMB showed higher charge/discharge capacities, higher reversible specific charge capacity and better cycleability than a raw MCMB. As the amount of impregnated SnO$_2$ increased, both reversible and irreversible capacities increased.
The planar Schottky diodes were fabricated and modeled to probe the device applicability of the cracked GaN epitaxial layer on a (111) silicon substrate. On the unintentionally n-doped GaN grown on silicon, we deposited Ti/Al/Ni/Au as the ohmic metal and Pt as the Schottky metal. The ohmic contact achieved a minimum contact resistivity of $5.51{\times}10.5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^{2}$ after annealing in an $N_{2}$ ambient at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec. The fabricated Schottky diode exhibited the barrier height of 0.7 eV and the ideality factor was 2.4, which are significantly lower than those parameters of crack free one. But in photoresponse measurement, the diode showed the peak responsivity of 0.097 A/W at 300 nm, the cutoff at 360 nm, and UV/visible rejection ratio of about $10^{2}$. The SPICE(Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) simulation with a proposed model, which was composed with one Pt/GaN diode and three parasitic diodes, showed good agreement with the experiment.

Built-in voltage in organic light-emitting diodes was studied using modulated photocurrent technique ambient conditions. From the bias voltage-dependent photocurrent, built-in voltage of the device is determined. The applied bias voltage when the magnitude of modulated photo current is zero corresponds to a built-in voltage. Built-in voltage in the device is generated due to a difference of work function of the anode and cathode. A device was made with a structure of anode/$Alq_3$/cathode to study a built-in voltage. ITO and ITO/PEDOT:PSS were used as an anode, and Al and LiF/AI were used as a cathode. It was found that an incorporation of PEDOT:PSS layer between the ITO and $Alq_3$ increases a built-in voltage by about 0.4V. This is consistent to a difference of a highest occupied energy states of ITO and PEDOT:PSS. This implies that a use of PEDOT:PSS layer in anode improves the efficiency of the device because of a lowering of anode barrier height. With a use bilayer cathode system LiF/Al, it was found that the built-in voltage increases as the LiF layer thickness increases in the thickness range of 0~1nm. For 1nm thick LiF layer, there is a lowering of electron barrier by about 0.2eV with respect to an Al-only device. It indicates that a very thin alkaline metal compound LiF lowers an electron barrier height.

In this study, ultra thin films of ferroelectric vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (VF2-TrFE) copolymer were fabricated on degenerated Si (n+, $0.002\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) using by spin coating method. A 1~5 wt% diluted solution of purified vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (VF2:TrFE=70:30) in a dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent were prepared and deposited on silicon wafers at a spin rate of 2000~5000rpm for 30 seconds. After annealing in a vacuum ambient at $200^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, upper gold electrodes were deposited by vacuum evaporation for electrical measurement. X-ray diffraction results showed that the VF2-TrFE films on Si substrates had $\beta$-phase of copolymer structures. The capacitance on $n^+$-Si(100) wafer showed hysteresis behavior like a butterfly shape and this result indicates clearly that the dielectric films have ferroelectric properties. The typical measured remnant polarization (2Pr) and coercive filed (EC) values measured using a computer controlled a RT-66A standardized ferroelectric test system (Radiant Technologies) were about $0.54\;C/cm^2$ and 172 kV/cm, respectively, in an applied electric field of ${\pm}0.75\;MV/cm$.
High-energy linear accelerators are increasingly used in the medical field. However, the unwanted photo-neutrons can also be contributed to the dose delivered to the patients during their treatments. In this study, neutron fluxes were measured in a solid water phantom placed at the isocenter 1-m distance from the head of an18-MV linac using the foil activation method. The produced activities were measured with a calibrated well-type Ge detector. From the measured fluxes, the total neutron fluence was found to be $(1.17{\pm}0.06){\times}10^7n/cm^2$ per Gy at the phantom surface in a $20{\times}20cm^2$ X-ray field size. The maximum photo-neutron dose was measured to be $0.67{\pm}0.04$ mSv/Gy at $d_{max}=5cm$ depth in the phantom at isocenter. The present results are compared with those obtained for different field sizes of $10{\times}10cm^2$, $15{\times}15cm^2$, and $20{\times}20cm^2$ from 10-, 15-, and 18-MV linacs. Additionally, ambient neutron dose equivalents were determined at different locations in the room and they were found to be negligibly low. The results indicate that the photo-neutron dose at the patient position is not a negligible fraction of the therapeutic photon dose. Thus, there is a need for reduction of the contaminated neutron dose by taking some additional measures, for instance, neutron absorbing-protective materials might be used as aprons during the treatment.
