  • Photoelectrocatalytic system is based on the idea that the photogenerated electrons in a layer of TiO$_2$ would move toward a cathode with application of high voltage across the TiO$_2$ coated aluminum plate. In this system, aluminum plate is used as a substrate for TiO$_2$ and also serves as a cathode. According to our scheme, moving photogenerated electrons toward a cathode would have the same effect as moving these electrons away from the holes, which would have the effect of retarding recombination of photogenerated electrons with holes. Recent experiments on benzene and toluene showed higher rates of removal with high voltage on compared to high voltage off, which supported our scheme partially.

  • When the product is removed from the mold after molding during the sheet metal molding process, elastic recovery causes a springback phenomenon. Much research has been done to minimize this phenomenon. In this study, V-bending experiments were conducted using galvanized steel sheets, stainless steel, and aluminum sheet materials, using a total of nine types of thin sheet materials of 1.0t, 1.5t, and 2.0t, respectively. Molding analysis and experimental data were compared and analyzed. In the case of galvanized steel sheets, it was considered that the springback phenomenon occurs more frequently in molding analysis than in experiments. It was considered that the springback phenomenon occurs greatly in the experiment, not the interpretation of the molding of the stainless steel plate and the aluminum plate. It was considered that the springback occurrence tendency of the molding analysis and the experiment was the same, and the springback occurrence error rate of the molding analysis and the experimental result was about 4.0%.

  • Until now, there are different kinds of design and evaluation method criteria for ship hulls and ship strength based on allowable stress design using past experiences. But for many sinking accidents of large ships in operation, it has also a doubt about allowable stress design. It is recognized that structural plastic collapse caused by large external force is a main cause of that accidents. Therefore, there is the need for new design criteria based on ultimate limit state with a consideration about progressive collapse behavior as a safety assessment of ship hulls. Also many aluminum alloy ships is built for the purposes of lightweight of ship hulls, with that, a developing of criteria based on ultimate limit state should be made. In this study, the ultimate strength characteristics of aluminum ship hull are investigated by the ALPS/USAS program using already developed design formula for aluminum plate and stiffened panel.

  • This study has been motivated to evaluate the practicality of numerical simulation of impedance monitoring for damage detection in steel column connection. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, the theory of electro-mechanical (E/M) impedance responses and impedance-based damage monitoring method are outlined. Secondly, the feasibility of numerical simulation of impedance monitoring is verified for several pre-published experimental examples on steel beams, cracked aluminum beams, and aluminum round plates. Undamaged and damaged steel and aluminum beams are simulated to compare to experimental impedance responses. An aluminum round plate with PZT patch in center is simulated to investigate sensitive range of impedance responses. Finally, numerical simulation of the impedance-based damage monitoring is performed for a steel column connection in which connection bolts are damaged. From the numerical simulation test, the applicability of the impedance-based monitoring to the target steel column connection can be evaluated.

  • The purpose of this experiment is to study the radiant cooling effects by a plate directly viewing the nighttime sky. The measurements are performed at a rooftop of the Engineering building at the Dongguk University in Seoul during the month of August in 2004. The radiant cooling effects are compared using three different types of plate surfaces such as galvanized Iron, black painted, and aluminum film coated galvanized iron plate. Among these plates, the black painted surface show the lowest temperature that is lower than its ambient temperature. The maximum radiant cooling temperature difference, that is ambient temperature minus plate temperature, observed is about 5K..

  • The most important factor in an aircraft manufacturing is stability and weight reduction. Most of aircraft components are designed with thin plate type to satisfy weight reduction needs. The thin plate is difficult to be machined because it is apt to be vibrated by dynamic force generated in milling process. The most critical factor in machining of aluminum thin plate is width and thickness between stiffeners. So we tested many cases to find out the machinable minimum thickness at different width between stiffeners. And with the data obtained from many tests, this papers suggested the standard width thickness relation that is machinable without vacuum fixture. Machinist will be able to reduce the cost of aircraft thin plate parts by reducing the number of vacuum fixture used by the help of this standard.

  • Acoustic response control of a comer-pinned plate using piezoelectric wafers was studied, both theoretically and experimentally. Three different sizes of aluminum alloy plates were used and available ball joints were employed to hold the plate at the four comers. The plate with the largest aspect ratio showed the largest and most clear responses to the acoustic excitation in the range of frequencies (0~200Hz), and sound pressure levels (80~100dB) as predicted. The reduction of the acoustic response of the plate by piezoelectric actuator was very significant, more than expected, but abatement of the sound transmission through the plate was only slightly altered by the piezoelectric actuator. This work is an original work extending earlier work with doors excited by acoustic fields. The important difference is the used of ball joints to simulate the joints.

  • In this study, we develop the lower pressure die casting with rheo-forming process of A356 aluminum alloy and vacuum system which can control the crystal size and obtain the high strengthened-light material. Using this process, we fabricate the thin plate for bipolar plate through the low pressure die casting with electromagnetic stirring and vacuum-evacuation which can control the crystal grain by electromagnetic stirring. Thin plate ($110mm{\times}130mm{\times}1mm$) is fabricated by this process. The average Vickers hardness of thin plate is about 77 HV.
