  • I-V characteristics of ground electrode fabricated using an aluminium scrap are presented. We fabricated several shapes of aluminium scraps and aluminium electrodes. The results show that the current of aluminium electrode increased linearly by the voltage increase. AC breakdown voltage of copper plate electrode was higher than that of aluminium electrode. AC breakdown current of aluminium electrode was higher than that of copper plate electrode. As applied voltage increased, grounding resistance of aluminum electrode decreased linearly.

Utilization of Waste Aluminium Foil as a Sacrificial Electrode for the Treatment of Wastewater

  • In this study, the use of waste food grade aluminium foil and mild steel as a sacrificial electrode in an electrocoagulation system was developed to remove reactive red 111 from wastewater. The effect of different parameters like pH, current density, electrode material, and different electrode configurations was investigated. Optimum operating conditions for maximum COD removal were determined as, 6 mA/㎠ current density and 30 min at 5 pH for aluminium foil and 7 pH for mild steel. Maximum COD reduction obtained at optimum conditions using monopolar 4 electrodes, monopolar 2 electrodes and bipolar electrode configuration were 96.5%, 89.3%, and 90.2% for Mild steel as a sacrificial electrode and 92.1%, 84.2%, and 88.6% for aluminium foil as a sacrificial electrode. The consumption of electrode and energy for both the electrodes of different configurations were calculated and compared. Using batch experimental data, a continuous-flow reactor was developed. Sludge analysis using Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was done. Different adsorption kinetic models and isotherms were developed and it was found that pseudo second-order model and Langmuir isotherm fit best with the experimental data obtained.

  • This research studied the characteristics and applicability of electrocoagulation using aluminium electrode for the color and COD removal in textile wastewater. Electrocoagulation reactor used two different electrode, Fe and Al, since in the general chemical wastewater treatment, aluminium and ferrous salts were used as coagulants. Aluminium electrode showed higher removal efficiency of color and COD than ferrous electrode did. The COD and color removal efficiency improved at the 0.192A/$dm^2$ current density. Thus, the electrocoagulation process with bipolar aluminium electrode showed better efficiency in the decolorization and COD removal rate of textile wastewater effluent than custom coagulants did.

  • The erosion of electrode in spot welding of aluminium alloy by direct current is dependent on the electric polarity. The positive electrode is much more eroded than the negative one. To explain this phenomenon, Peltier effect has been generally accepted as a unique theory. In this study Peltier effect was evaluated by calculations on the basis of some references and experiments. The difference of heat generated by Peltier effect on both electrode surfaces was, however, only 4% of total heat generated during wel- ding. Because of insufficient explanation, Kohler theory, which is mainly affected by thin oxide film, was introduced. A theoretical calculation showed 17% of the temperature difference between the positive and negative electrode, in case "surface voltage" resulted from oxide film was 30% of total contact voltage. This revealed that the erosion of electrode could be more affected by Kohler theory than effect.an effect.

Assessment of gas production and electrochemical factors for fracturing flow-back fluid treatment in Guangyuan oilfield

  • Electrochemical method was used for the fracturing flow-back fluid treatment in Guangyuan oilfield. After performing electrolysis, we found that the amount of $H_2$ gas produced by electrode was closely related to the combination mode of electrodes and electrode materials. Using an aluminium electrode resulted in a large $H_2$ production of each electrode combination, whereas inert anode and cathode materials resulted in low $H_2$ production. Then, the relationship between the gas production of $H_2$ and the treatment efficiency of fracturing flow-back fluid in Guangyuan oilfield was studied. Results showed that the turbidity removal and decolourisation rates of fracturing flow-back fluid were high when $H_2$ production was high. If the $H_2$ production of inert electrode was large, the energy consumption of this inert electrode was also high. However, energy consumption when an aluminium anode material was used was lower than that when the inert electrode was used, whereas the corresponding electrode combination production of $H_2$ was larger than that of the inert electrode combination. When the inert electrode was used as anode, the gas production type was mainly $O_2$, and $Cl_2$ was also produced and dissolved in water to form $ClO^-$. $H_2$ production at the cathode was reduced because $ClO^-$ obtained electrons.

  • Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the effects of various factors on the phosphorus removal by electrolysis with aluminium electrodes. The efficiency of phosphorus removal increases with increasing of voltage applied, surface area of electrodes and electrolyte concentration, and decreasing of electrode distance. The phosphorus removal was not affected by the connection number of an electric circuit. The amount of aluminium ion eluted from electrodes according to Faraday's law was 4.47 mg and the A/P mole ratio was 2.14 at the electric current value of 20 mA.

  • Spot welding is one of the important welding processes for the construction of thin metal sheet. Because of low investment cost, alternating welding current is widely applied for power source. Direct current type could be, however, recommened for high quality weldment. In this study, the effect of welding current type on the weldability and the electrode life in spot welding of aluminium alloy were investigated. Various welding tests were done by using three phase direct and alternating welding current, respectively. In spite of high variation of welding force, weld quality and electrode life with alternating welding current were shown better results than those with direct current for 2mm thick alumininum alloy sheets. This was due to excessive erosion of the positive electrode in direct welding current compared with the negative one. On the contrary to 2mm sheets, the welding parameters of alternating current for 1mm sheets must be carefully selected.

전극의 전기분해 용출을 통한 해성점토의 개량에 관한 연구 (A Study on Improvement of Marine Clay through the Leaching Effect of Electrolyte Reaction in Electrode)

  • 본 연구에서는 해성점토의 전단강도를 증진시킬 목적으로 철과 알루미늄 전극을 직접 삽입한 후 전극을 분해하여 지반 고결화 효과를 유발하였다. 이를 위해 남해안에서 채취한 실제 해성점토에 대해 실내 토조를 이용한 파일럿 실험을 실시하였고, 각각 철과 알루미늄을 삽입한 후 일정 고전류(2.5A)를 적용시켰다. 고결화에 의한 영향을 파악하고자 실험 종료 후에는 콘관입시험기를 이용하여 비배수 전단강도를 측정하였으며, 위치별 함수비와 pH 및 전기전도도를 측정하여 철과 알루미늄의 전극분해에 의한 고결화 효과를 간접적으로 판단하였다. 철 전극 전기분해 실험 결과, 양(+)극부 근처에서의 함수비는 초기에 비해 35% 감소하였고, 음극부 근처에서는 13% 증가하였으나, 양극부에서 용출된 철 이온과 흙 입자의 고결화 작용에 의해 전체적으로 측정된 전단강도는 초기에 비해 상당히 증가하였다. 또한 알루미늄 전극을 이용하였을 경우, 철에 비해 비교적 균일한 전단강도 증진효과가 나타났으며, 그 개량정도 역시 더 크게 나타났다.

  • Electropolishing is the controlled electrochemical removal of surface metal, resultmg in a brilliant appearance andimproved properties. Sometimes described as "reverse plating," the process has a leveling effect, which produces smoothnessand increased reflectivity. Unlike conventional mechanical finishing systems, the electropolishing does not smear, bend,stress or fracture the crystalline metal surface to achieve smoothness. Instead, electropolishing removes metal from thesurface producing a unidirectional pattern that is stress-free, microscopically smooth and often highly reflective. In addition,improved corrosion resistance and passivity are achieved on many ferrous and some non-ferrous alloys.   • Film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) using AIN reactively sputtered at room temperature was fabricated. The FBAR is composed of a piezoelectric aluminium nitride thin film, top electrode of Al and bottom electrode of Au connected by a short (200${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) transmission line on both sides and reflector layers of SiO$_2$- W Pair. The active areas of Al and Au were patterned using 150${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter shadow mask. The series resonance frequency (fs) and the parallel resonance frequency (fp) were measured at 1.976 GHz and 2.005 GHz, respectively. The minimum insertion loss and return loss were 6.1 dB and 37.19 dB, and the quality factor (Q) was 4261.
