  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of uterus shortening on the duration required for estrus, the number of ovulation and the level of serum progesterone and prostaglandin $F_{2}{\alpha} (PGF_{2}{\alpha} $). The duration required for estrus after the surgical shortening of uterine horns and the interval between the following estrus was not affected by the surgical treatment but affected by luteal and follicular phase. The number of ovulations were increased by induction of superovulation to gilts with shortened uterine horns compared to the control. Serum progesterone concentration during the luteal phase was higher than that during the follicular phase with no difference between the control and me horns than that of the control. Findings of this study indicate that luteal formation and regressions and estrus cycle were normal when the unconnected parts of uterine horns were left in abdominal cavity. Therefore surgical shortening of uterine horns of sows helps embryo collections by non-surgical methods.

  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation of Ti-25Ta-xHf alloy in electrolyte containing Ca and P for dental implants was investigated using various experimental techniques. Ti-25Ta-xHf (x=0 and 15 wt.%) alloys were manufactured in an arc-melting vacuum furnace. Micropores were formed in PEO films on Ti-25Ta-xHf alloys in 0.15 M calcium acetate monohydrate + 0.02 M calcium glycerophosphate at 240 V, 270 V and 300 V for 3 min, respectively. The microstructure of Ti-25Ta-xHf alloys changed from (${\alpha}^{\prime}+{\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$) phase to (${\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}+{\beta}$) phase by addition of Hf. As the applied potential increased, the number of pore and the area ratio of occupied by micro-pore decreased, whereas the pore size increased. The anatase phase increase as the applied potential increased. Also, the crystallite size of anatase-$TiO_2$ can be controlled by applied voltage.

Burst criterion for Indian PHWR fuel cladding under simulated loss-of-coolant accident

  • The indigenous nuclear power program of India is based mainly on a series of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). A burst correlation for Indian PHWR fuel claddings has been developed and empirical burst parameters are determined. The burst correlation is developed from data available in literature for single-rod transient burst tests performed on Indian PHWR claddings in inert environment. The heating rate and internal overpressure were in the range of 7 K/s-73 K/s and 3 bar-80 bar, respectively, during the burst tests. A burst criterion for inert environment, which assumes that deformation is controlled by steady state creep, has been developed using the empirical burst parameters. The burst criterion has been validated with experimental data reported in literature and the prediction of burst parameters is in a fairly good agreement with the experimental data. The burst criterion model reveals that increasing the heating rate increases the burst temperature. However, at higher heating rates, burst strain is decreased considerably and an early rupture of the claddings without undergoing considerable ballooning is observed. It is also found that the degree of anisotropy has significant influence on the burst temperature and burst strain. With increasing degree of anisotropy, the burst temperature for claddings increases but there is a decrease in the burst strain. The effect of anisotropy in the ${\alpha}$-phase is carried over to ${\alpha}+{\beta}$-phase and its effect on the burst strain in the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$-phase too can be observed.

Prelithiation of Alpha Phase Nanosheet-Type VOPO4·2H2O Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • Owing to the rising concern of global warming, lithium-ion batteries have gained immense attention over the past few years for the development of highly efficient electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems. In this study, alpha-phase VOPO4·2H2O with nanosheet morphology was prepared via a facile hydrothermal method for application in high-performance lithium-ion batteries. The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses indicated that the obtained sample had an alpha-2 (αII) phase, and the nanosheet morphology of the sample was confirmed using SEM. The lithium-ion battery with VOPO4·2H2O as the anode exhibited excellent long-term cycle life and a high capacity of 256.7 mAh g-1 at room temperature. Prelithiation effectively improved the specific capacity of pristine VOPO4·2H2O. The underlying electrochemical mechanisms were investigated by carrying out AC impedance, rate capability, and other instrumental analyses.

  • Progesterone catabolizing enzyme, the enzyme $20{\alpha}$-hydroxysteroid dehydrgenase($20{\alpha}$-HSD) is pivotal in the regulation of ovarian function in rodents, which catabolizes progesterone into biologically inactive $20{\alpha}$-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one($20{\alpha}$-OHP). In this study was carried out the influence of $20{\alpha}$-HSD activity of ovarian function, we investigated changes in ovarian cytosol $20{\alpha}$-HSD activity and serume progesterone concentration during the estrous cycles and pregnancy in rat. During the estrous cycles, the $20{\alpha}$-HSD activities were highest on the progestrous, but serum progesterone concentration was lowest on this phase. During the pregnancy, the $20{\alpha}$-HSD activities were relatively higher early pregnancy(day-1-3 gestation) and late pregnancy(day 21 to parturition), serum progesterone concentration was maintained significantly high to day 19 of gestation. The $20{\alpha}$-HSD activities were lower during the middle pregnancy. From these results, ovarian $20{\alpha}$-HSD activities may possibly act as physiologically very important in the control and maintenance of estrous cycles in rat.

Synthesis of an Aspartame Precursor Using Thermolysin in Organic Two-Phase System (유기용매 이상계에서 Thermolysin에 의한 아스파탐 전구체 생산)

  • The synthesis of N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester(ZAPM), a precursor of aspartame, from N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-aspartic acid(Z-Asp) and L-phenylalanine methyl ester hydrochloride(L-PM-HCl) was investigated in ethylacetate-MES buffer two-phase system using thermolysin. In organic two-phase system, the degree of spontaneous hydrolysis of L-PM. HCl was significantly reduced with increasing the volume ratio of organic to aqueous phase. Stability of thermolysin in organic two-phase system was found to be higher than that in MES buffer solution. More than 90% of initial enzyme activity was maintained after 10 days of incubation in case that the volume of organic phase was equal to that of buffer phase, while the half life of thermolysin was about 2 days in aqueous buffer solution. The results of partitioning of substrates and product in organic two-phase system showed that the difference in partition coefficients between substrates and product was maximum at pH 5.5. The optimal pH for 2-APM synthesis in organic two-phase system was found to be 5.5-5.8, which is consistent with the value expected from the partition experiments. As the concentration of substrates was increased the conversion yield of Z-APM was increased with concomitant reduction of L-PMqHC1 hydrolysis. In case that the concentration of L-PM-HCl and Z-Asp were 160 mM and 80 mM respectively, the conversion yield of Z-APM reached 90% after 28 hrs of reaction. The yield obtained at different volume ratio of organic phase compares well with the predicted equilibrium constant in biphasic system.

Genotypic Variation of Rapid Canopy Closure and Its Relationship with Yield of Rice (벼 조기초관폐쇄성의 품종 변이 및 수량과의 관계)

  • Rapid canopy closure (RCC) is one of the physiological attributes that may enhance genetic yield potential of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in a growing season. Crop growth before canopy closure could be described by an exponential equation of $y\;=\;{\alpha}{\cdot}{\exp}({\beta}{\cdot}t)$ where $\alpha$ is the crop leaf area index (LAI) or shoot dry weight (DW), t is the thermal time, $\beta$ is the LAI or DW at the beginning of the exponential growth and is the relative growth rate of LAI ($m^2m^{-2}^{\circ}C^{-1}$) or DW($gg^{-2}^{\circ}C^{-1}$). Field experiment using 22 cultivars revealed that the exponential growth phase before canopy closure can be divided into two sections; an earlier section during which crop dry weight and LAI of varieties are highly dependent on $\alpha$ and a second section where crop dry weight and LAI are highly dependent on $\beta$. Grain weight had significantly positive correlation with $\alpha$ parameter and dry weight and LAI during early exponential phase. The parameter $\beta$ of the exponential growth curve had positive and significant correlation with the LAI and dry weight during the late exponential growth phase, grain number per unit area, and grain yield. There was genotypic difference for RCC parameters, $\alpha$ and $\beta$, indicating the possibility of genetic improvement for these traits.

Microstructural Change by Hot Forging Process of Korean Traditional Forged High Tin Bronze (전통기술로 제작된 방짜유기의 열간 단조 과정별 미세조직 변화)

  • Currently, the fabrication of a high-tin bronze spoon by traditional manufacturing techniques involves 10 steps in the bronze ware workshop. Hot forging has a major influence on manufacturing and involves two to three steps. The dendritic ${\alpha}$-phase in the microstructure of the high-tin bronze spoon is refined and finely dispersed through hot forging. In addition, twinning is observed in the ${\alpha}$-phase of the hammered part, and the ${\alpha}$-phase microstructure gradually transform from a polygon to a circular shape due to hammering. In this process, the adjacent ${\alpha}$-phases overlap with each other and remain combined after quenching. The microstructure with the overlapping is also observed in bronze artifacts, and this shows the correlation with technical system. The results of the experimental hot forging of Cu-22%Sn alloys show that the decrease in in the amount of the dendritic microstructure, which forms during casting, is in proportion to the number of processing steps and that the refined grain obtained by hammering contributes to the improvement in the strength of the material. From the hammering marks, which are observed on both the bronze artifact excavated from archaeological sites and on the high-tin bronze spoon produced in the traditional workshop, it is presumed that the knowledge regarding the unrecorded manufacturing system of bronze ware in ancient times has been passed down in a traditional way up to the system used currently.

Characteristics of Nano-Sized, α-2ZrO2·P2O5 Powder Prepared by Polyvinyl Alcohol Solution Method (Polyvinyl Alcohol 용액법에 의해 제조된 나노크기 α-2ZrO2·P2O5 분말의 특성 연구)

  • $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$ powder, which is not synthesized by solid reaction method, was successfully synthesized through PVA solution method. In this process, the firing temperature and the PVA content strongly affected the crystallization behavior and final particle size. A stable ${\alpha}$-phase $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$ was synthesized at a firing temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ and holding time of 4 h. ${\beta}$-phase $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$ was observed, with un-reacted $ZrO_2$ phases, for firing temperatures lower than $1200^{\circ}C$. In terms of the PVA content effect, the powder prepared with a PVA mixing ratio of 12:1 showed stable ${\alpha}$-phase $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$; however, the ${\beta}$-phase was found to co-exist at relatively higher PVA content. The synthesized ${\alpha}$-phase $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$ powder showed an average particle size of 100~250 nm and an average thermal expansion coefficient of $-2.5{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the range of room temp. ${\sim}800^{\circ}C$.

Consolidation of p-type Fe(Mn)Si2 Thermoelectric Powder and Microstructure (P형 Fe(Mn)Si2 열전재료 분말의 성형 및 미세조직)

  • The effects of the dopant (Mn) ratio on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of $FeSi_2$ alloy were studied in this research. The alloy was fabricated by a combination process of ball milling and high pressure pressing. Structural behavior of the sintered bulks were systematically investigated by XRD, SEM, and optical microscopy. With increasing dopan (Mn) ratio, the density and ${\varepsilon}-FeSi$ phase of the sintered bulks increased and maximum density of 94% was obtained in the 0.07% Mn-doped alloy. The sintered bulks showed fine microstructure of ${\alpha}-Fe_{2}Si_{5}$, ${\varepsilon}-FeSi$ and ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ phase. The semiconducting phase of ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ was transformed from ${\alpha}-Fe_{2}Si_{5}+{\varepsilon}-FeSi$ phase by annealing.
