  • The geomorphic deformation of the alluvial fans by tectonic movement was investigated along the lineaments of the northem part of the Ulsan(Bulguksa) fault system. Based on the aerial photographs interpretation and field surveys Ulsan fault system was identified as an active reverse fault which has displaced the Quatemary fan deposits. Buguksa fault system strikes for the direction of NW-SE and N-S. These two lineaments of active fault are crossing at Jinty village in Gyeongju city and the fault plane forms here almost vertical dip. The lateral pressures from the two directions have possibly influenced on the formation of the vertical dip at jinty villagy. It should be resulted from that the two pressures responsible for the active reverse fault at which the one with the NW-SE strike thrusts the hanging wall of Tohamsan block southwestward and the other pressure with the N-S strike thrusts it westward over the foot wall of the fan deposits. The marine oxygen isotope stage 8(0.30-0.25 Ma. BP) and stage 6(0.20-0.14 Ma. BP) are presumed to be the ages of high and middle surfaces of the alluvial fan, repectively. The vertical displacements on the high surfaces along the Bulguksa fault system are about 1.05 m at Ha-Dong, 9.5-10.5 m at Jinhyun-Dong, and about 10 m high at Jinty village. And the vertical displacement on the middle surface was measured about 6 m high at Ha-Dong. The average slip rate of vertical displacements is calculated about 0.03-0.43 mm/y.

  • It is important to understand the complex, various migration features of the alluvial channels for river engineering. In this study, the morphological changes and migration features of alluvial channels were investigated by analyzing the aerial photographs of active channels between 1972 and 2004 in Hapyeong Intake Station, Nakdong river. The lower channels were migrated from left bank to right bank and showed the features of braided channel in 2004. The instability of lower channels was increased due to the increased channel slope and width. The sinuosity of lower channels was decreased with time. As time increased, the increasing rate of lower channel and lateral migration rate were decreased. As a result of meso-scale regime analysis by using bankfull discharge, multiple row bars were developed, and suspended sediment load was governed in the flow as a sand bed channel.

  • Changes in bed forms and subsequent changes in channel roughness by changes in water discharge are discussed with the field data collected from some alluvial rivers in Korea. This study is limited to the following condition of river flow: (1) Medium size alluvial rivers with their widths of 100 m more or less, (2) Straight and prismatic river reach with no additional causes for energy loss but bed friction, (3) Lower-flow regime with Froude number less than 0.5. Major conclusions obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) For the channels considered in this study, the bed roughness expressed by Manning's n increases from 0.02 for the plane beds with no sediment motion to 0.05 for the dune beds, (2) The roughness coefficient for alluvial channels should not be estimated from Strickler-type equations developed for the fixed beds, (3) The method for determining the channel roughness suggested in the present guideline for river works, River Structure Standard, appears to be lack of generality. More research based on the field data collected in Korea is needed in order to improve the existing methods.

  • Based on the concentration of $^{40}K$ naturally occurring radioisotope of potassium, a method for the determination of total potassium in soils and plants was developed. The method was extended to evaluate the potassium supplying power of soils by taking the ratio of exchangeable potassium to total potassium $(K_{ex}/K_t)$, termed the potassium buffering capacity. Using this as index, it was observed that the release of potassium from soil fellows the from order reaction. A linear relationship was found between the potassium buffering capacity and the release constant of potassium or mica content of the clay. Similarly the potassium buffering capacity was also closely correlated with total uptake of potassium by rice plant. Hence it is concluded that the method for determining of the potassium buffering capacity could be veil applied to characterize the potassium availability of soils. The method for the determination of potassium is characterized by (1) The efficient measurement of the weak beta activity emissions from the samples, (2) identification of $^{40}K$, (3) calculation of total potassium content using the proportional constant of $^{40}K$ of samples to that of the standard. Difference in the potassium supplying power of soils due to soil types was also evaluated with the use of this technique. The degree of the potassium supplying power was in the order of soil types as red-yellow podzolic and lateric soils, basaltic materials(Rvd)> low-humic gley and alluvial soils, alluvial plains and food plains(Apa)> low-humic gley soils, nearly level to sloping local alluvial plains and slopes(Afb)> low-humic gley and alluvial soils, fluvio-marine plains (Fma).

  • In order to make comparative analysis of geomorphological changes caused by urban development, I surveyed the distribution of geomorphological resources of 'Daegu Innovation Town' development plan area. The results are as follow: (1) At the front of small valleys of back-mountains are formed small alluvial fans, and at the side of small valleys are distributed hills connected with back-mountains. (2) As small valley erode laterally hills, vertical bluffs and planner bedrock riverbed are formed, and in some riverbed are appeared mud cracks and ripple marks. (3) The depth of valley in alluvial fan of 'Sinseo District' is 7m. In Sinseocheon valley dissecting alluvial fan, fluvial terraces 2m high above riverbed are distributed. Those terraces were formed while alluvial fan was dissected after last glacial period.

  • The present study was aimed to evaluate the soil microbial communities by fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) method in paddy soils at 20 sites in Gyeongnam Province. The soil microbial biomass carbon content of fan and valley $1,266mg\;kg^{-1}$ was higher than alluvial plain $578mg\;kg^{-1}$ (p<0.05). In addition, The dehydrogenase activity of fan and valley $204{\mu}g\;TPF\;g^{-1}\;24h^{-1}$ was higher than alluvial plain $93{\mu}g\;TPF\;g^{-1}\;24h^{-1}$ (p<0.05). The communities of total bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria in the fan and valley paddy soils were significantly higher than those in the alluvial plain paddy soils (p<0.05). Total bacteria communities should be considered as a potential responsible factor for the obvious microbial community differentiation that was observed between the fan and valley and alluvial plain in paddy soils.

  • This paper is to exhibit the numerical analysis of sediment transport in the slowly varing flow and the sediment transport relation between the steady and the unsteady flow in the alluvial stream. The gradually varied flow of alluvial stream and the sediment transport are very complicated physical phenomen. Therefore the mathematical modeling is needed to be established. Linear implicit means of modified indirect method are applied to sediment transport by numerical analysis instead of the conception of steady flow in order to decrease errors. Further more, this study has purpose on reasonable prediction of the river-bed variation by way of this numerical method.

  • This paper introduces an irrigation facility for agricultural use of Rokugo alluvial fan in Yokote Basin, northeastern Japan. A cylindrical distributor of agricultural water is able to supply water accurately to seven irrigated areas through its 180 orifices and one circular baffle, implying that people around fan areas has been tenacious of agricultural water. It has been recently reevaluated as tourism resources or symbolic landscape reflecting regional characteristics even though its functional value has decreased.

  • The study is focused on the analysis of geomorphological environment changes of alluvial bar in lower Kum river using satellite-based multitemporal/multisensor data. Landsat datas for environment changes analysis consists of Landset MSS(2 scenes) and Landset TM(7 scenes) acquired from 1979 to 1994. This study is to develop the analysis techniques for the environment change detection of using ratio, classification, false color composite etc, of Landsat data especially useful to the geomorphological study of tidal flats and river channels. The results of this study can be summarized as follows : 1. The lower Kum River alluvial bar have had rapid geomorphological changes after the construction of the temporary dam to block the river flowing in 1983. The most alluvial bar located in the river has both bankway growth, especially the allurival bar in the Lower Kum River had grown between 1983 to 1990. 2. After construction of the estuarine barrage, no remarkable geomorphological changes have been found in Kum River area but the growth and formation of new underwater bar has continued. The enormous materials was needed for the growth and formations of new underwater barrier oslands and bar would be supplied from the sea bottom and river sediment to diminish of stream velocity after construction of the estuarine barrage.
