Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of pile should be known accurately. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanism of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For the investigation, five cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the Held test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The f-w (side shear resistance-displacement) curve of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a for millimeter displacements, and after yielding point, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, the f-w curve in the highly/completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and the resistance gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until relatively high displacement (>15 mm). The q-w (end bearing resistance-displacement) curves showed linear response at least until the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless of rock mass conditions.

The fluid power products are widely used in current industrial area such as automation of products and equipment assembly, high-tech machine tool, aircraft, train, and etc. As the development of industry is in progress, the development of the fluid power products is demanding and it is required in every industrial area. This research proposed a pneumatic system to evaluate displacement accuracy of the pneumatic actuator without external load and to analyze capability of integration of the valve system. The pneumatic system consisted of a combination of pneumatic actuator, four two-port valves, two three-port valves, two pressure valve, a check valve, two proximity sensors, and a program logic controller (PLC). The position controller is based on the PLC connected with the proximity sensors. The maximum air pressure applied for tests was $49.05N/cm^2$ and the displacement accuracy of a stroke was measured using a dial gauge. The supply- and discharge-side of air pressure and the length of the stroke of the pneumatic cylinder were varied The test of the position control of the pneumatic cylinder was carried out 50 times at each supply- and discharge-side air pressure of 24.53/34.34, 29.43/39.24, 34.34/44.15, and $39.24/49.05N/cm^2$ and replicated three times. The accuracy of the displacement of the pneumatic cylinder stroke increased as the supply- and discharge-side of air pressure increased with the stroke length of 133mm. Also the displacement accuracy increased as the stroke length increased with the fixed supply- and discharge-side of air pressure of the pneumatic cylinder as 34.34 and $44.15N/cm^2$, respectively. The most accurate displacement of the pneumatic cylinder was obtained at the supplyand discharge-side of air pressure of 39.24 and $49.05N/cm^2$, respectively, and strokes of 170 and 190mm.
This study investigates optimum designs of steel space truss towers under seismic loading by using Jaya optimization algorithm. Turkish Earthquake Code (2007) specifications are applied on optimum designs of steel space truss towers under the seismic loading for different local site classes depending on different soil groups. The proposed novel algorithm does not have any algorithm-specific control parameters and depends only a simple revision equation. Therefore, it provides a practical solution for structural optimization problems. Optimum solutions of the different steel truss examples are carried out by selecting suitable W sections taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). In order to obtain optimum solutions, a computer program is coded in MATLAB in corporated with SAP2000-OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface). The stress and displacement constraints are applied on the design problems according to AISC-ASD (Allowable Stress Design) specifications. Firstly, a benchmark truss problem is examined to see the efficiency of Jaya optimization algorithm. Then, two different multi-element truss towers previously solved with other methods without seismic loading in literature are designed by the proposed algorithm. The first space tower is a 582-member space truss with the height of 80 m and the second space tower is a 942-member space truss of about 95 m height. The minimum optimum designs obtained with this novel algorithm for the case without seismic loading are lighter than the ones previously attained in the literature studies. The results obtained in the study show that Jaya algorithm is a practical and robust optimization method for structural optimization problems. Moreover, incorporation of the seismic loading causes significant increase in the minimum design weight.
In recent years, due to the many advantages cable-stayed bridges have often constructed in medium and long span. These advantages can be listed as an aesthetically pleasing appearance, economic and easy construction, etc. The main structural elements of cable-stayed bridges are listed as deck, pylon, cables and foundation. Perhaps one of the most vital and expensive of these structural elements is stay-cables. Stay-cables ensure the allowable displacement and distribution of bending moments along the bridge deck with prestressing force. Therefore the optimum design of the stay-cables and prestressing force are very important in achieving the performance expected from the cable-stayed bridges. This paper aims to obtain the stay-cables size and prestressing force optimization of the cable-stayed bridge. For this purpose, single pylon and fan type cable configuration Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge was selected as an example. The three dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) of the bridge was created with SAP2000. Analysis of the 3D FEM of the bridge was conducted under the different combined effects of the self-weight of the structural element, prestressing force of stay-cable and live load. Stay-cable stress and deck displacement were taken into account as constraints for the optimization problem. To optimize this existing bridge a metaheuristic algorithm named Jaya was used in the optimization process. 3D FEM of the selected bridge was repeatedly analyzed by using Open Applicable Programming Interface (OAPI) properties of SAP2000. To carry out the optimization process the developed program which integrates the Jaya algorithm and the required codes for calling SAP2000 is coded in MATLAB. At the end of the study, the total weight of the stay-cables was reduced more than 40% according to existing stay cables under loads taken into account.

In this study, a steel frame that realized the second floor of a structure was fabricated in referring to NFPA 13. In addition, a riser pipe system with groove joints was installed, and a seismic simulation test was performed using static cyclic loading. Cyclic loading tests on the maximum allowable side sway of seismic design standards for buildings in Korea were conducted using actuators to analyze the seismic behavior of the riser pipe system and major piping elements due to the deformation of the steel frame structure or the displacement-dominant behavior caused by the relative displacement between the structural members in the event of a seismic load. Moreover, the deformation angle of the riser pipe system was measured using an image measurement system because it is difficult to measure using the conventional sensors.
Active vibration control is generally used to reduce vibration level by the actuators based on measured signal. Dynamic properties of a structure can be easily modified by the active vibration control, so that the vibration level may be effectively reduced to the magnitude below the allowable limit over a wide frequency rangs. In this paper, an instantaneous optimal control algorithm including acceleration feedback is presented for the active vibration control of large structures considering facts that the acceleration response can be easily measured, but the displacement and velocity response are obtained by numerically integrating the measured acceleration response with some errors. The adverse effect of the time delay is overcomed by taking into account the dynamic characteristics of an actuator and filters in the design of controller. Performance test is carried out using a hydraulic active mass driver on a test structure$(L{\times}W{\times}H;=;1200mm{\times}800mm{\times}1600mm, about;500kg)$ supported by four columns under base excitations. It is confirmed that the vibration level of the test structure are reduced to about 1/6 near resonance.

This study, in order for perceiving the mechanical attribute followed by the explosive spalling of high strength concrete material under high temperature and evaluating capacity of endurance of material, targets understanding capacity of endurance of material such as explosive spalling in high temperature, temperature by thickness of clothing, transformation extent, transformation speed and displacement, stocking the maximum load based on the Allowable Stress Design Method. As a result of experimenting the explosive spalling attribute of high strength concrete material, the one possibly causing serious damage is the 50 MPa concrete. In all aspects of 60 MPa concrete, explosive spalling happens. Especially, it is hazardous enough to reveal all the iron bar. All explosive spalling is intensively concentrated on the surface of concrete for the first $5{\sim}25$ minutes, which urges for the explosive spalling protection action. As a result of evaluating the structural safety by the transformation of high strength concrete, while beam assures the fire safety meeting regulation, 60 MPa shows the dramatic increase of transformation, which only counts 84% of safety. In a column, both the concrete exclusion and excessive explosive spalling are concentrated upper part of column, which brings about the dramatic transformation, so it only meets the 50% of safety regulation. Likewise, in 80, 100 MPa concrete which was never experimented considering the condition of domestic structural endurance stocking devices, the faster collapse is expected.

Nearshore and offshore pipelines are often applied to carry oil, gas, water and combined products. The thermal and pressure gradients of the fluid inside pipeline cause pipeline expansion. This expansion produces stress to connecting structures with pipeline. Should this stress exceeds the yield strength of connecting components or the allowable displacement of the system, a damage can occur. As most pipelines contain hazardous and toxic fluids, the damage usually leads to fatal accidents involving great economic loss as well. Even subsea pipelines can be easily applied to transport liquid type fluid without time and space constraint, they should be designed and maintained carefully to be functional safely during design lifetime. In this paper, various theories estimating pipeline thermal expansion are investigated and the effects of pipe components to expansion are studied.
This paper presents the development and implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based deep excavation induced wall and ground displacements and wall support member forces prediction program (ANN-EXCAV). The program has been developed in a C# environment by using the well-known AI technique artificial neural network (ANN). Program used ANN to predict the induced displacement, groundwater drawdown and wall and support member forces parameters for deep excavation project and run the stability check by comparing predict values to the calculated allowable values. Generalised ANNs were trained to predict the said parameters through databases generated by numerical analysis for cases that represented real field conditions. A practical example to run the ANN-EXCAV is illustrated in this paper. Results indicate that the program efficiently performed the calculations with a considerable accuracy, so it can be handy and robust tool for preliminary design of wall and support members for deep excavation project.
In this study, three types of structures-stepped gabion retaining walls, vertical gabion retaining walls, and parapets-were installed on the dam floor crest to prevent the overflow of deteriorative homogeneous reservoirs. The acceleration response, displacement behavior, and pore water pressure ratio behavior were compared and evaluated using shaking-table model tests. The experimental conditions were set to 0.154 g in consideration of the domestic standard and the seismic acceleration range according to the magnitude of the earthquake, and the input waveform was applied with Pohang, Gongen, and artificial earthquake waves. The acceleration response according to the design ground acceleration increased as the height of the embankment increased, and the observed value were larger in the range of 1.1 to 2.1 times the input acceleration for all structures. The horizontal and vertical displacements exhibited maximum values on the upstream slope, and the embankment was evaluated as stable and included within the allowable range for all waveforms. The settlement ratio considering the similarity law exhibited the least change in the case of the parapet structure. The amplification ratio was 1.1 to 1.5 times in all structures, with the largest observed in the dam crest. The maximum excess pore water pressure ratio was in the range of 0.010 - 0.021, and the liquefaction evaluation standard was within 1.0, which was considered very stable.
