Allium victorialis L. (A. victorialis) is a very popular vegetable in Korea. The most commonly used parts of this vegetable are the bulbs and young leaves. To determine if the mature leaves have any beneficial properties, we investigated antioxidant, anti-${\alpha}$-glucosidase, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities of water and ethanol extracts from A. victorialis. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by measuring total phenolic content, DPPH and superoxide radicals scavenging activities. The water extract from A. victorialis ($W{\cdot}A$. victorialis) exhibited higher antioxidant ability than the ethanol extract ($E{\cdot}A$. victorialis). Moreover, the water extract showed strong inhibitory effect on ${\alpha}$-glucosidase. On the other hand, the ethanol extract had greater anti-inflammatory activity on murine macrophage cells (RAW 264.7) and greater anticancer activities against human colon cancer cells (HT-29). These results suggest that mature leaves from E·A. victorialis may have health-enhancing effects.
This study was carried out to determine the antimutagenic and anticancer effects of Allium victoriolis using Ames test and cytotoxicity. Allium victorialis extracted with ethanol and then further fractionated to chloroform, ethyl acetate and water. The inhibition rate of ethanol extract (200 $\mu\textrm{g}$/plate) of Allium victorialis in the Salmonella typhimurium TA100 strain showed 88.2% against the mutagenesis induced by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG). The suppression ratio against 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide(4NQO) in the Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 strains showed 76.4% and 83.0%, respectively. The cytotoxicity effects of Allium victorialis extract against the cell lines with human lung carcinoma (A549), human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and human gastric cacinoma (KATOIII) were inhibited with the increase of extract concentration. The treatment of 0.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/plate Allium victorialis of ethanol extract showed strong cytotoxicities of 74.2%, 71.3% and 67.4% against A549, MCF-7 and KATOIII, respectively.
This study examined the inflammatory reaction effects of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum in vivo at the time of a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) shock in rats, and in vitro in cultured Raw 264.7 cells, with the aim of facilitating the development of a new anti-inflammatory medicine. Plasma concentrations of interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$), and IL-10 in rats peaked 5 h after LPS treatment in all experimental groups, with those of IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, and TNF-${\alpha}$ being significantly lower in all animals treated with A. victorialis than in the control group at that time point. Conversely, the plasma concentration of IL-10 was higher in the rats treated with 300 mg/kg A. victorialis extract than in the control group at both 2 and 5 h after LPS treatment. Concentrations of IL-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 in the liver of rats treated with A. victorialis extract were significantly lower than those of the saline-treated control group. However, the liver concentrations of TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-10 did not vary significantly between the four animal groups. Similarly, concentrations of IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, and TNF-${\alpha}$ obtained from cultured Raw 264.7 macrophages were lower in all of the A.-victorialis-extract-treated groups than in the control group. Although the concentration of IL-10 in the A.-victorialis-extract-treated groups tended to be greater than in the control group, the differences between groups were not statistically significant. Together the findings of this study suggest that A. victorialis var. platyphyllum contains functional substances that are involved in inflammatory reactions.

Atherosclerosis is emerging as one of the major causes of death in Korea as well as Western societies. In the present study; hypocholesterolemic and antiatherogenic effects of the ethanol extract of Allium victorialis Makino was investigated using the conventional rabbit and the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP)-transgenic mouse model. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by feeding high cholesterol diet to the animals for 30 days and they were then fed with high cholesterol diet containing 0.5% of the A. victorialis extract for additional 30 (or 40) days. In the experiment using rabbits, treatment with the A. victorialis extract significantly decreased plasma total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, triglyceride levels and lipid peroxidation compared to those in the control group. Total cholesterol contents in the liver and the heart were also significantly decreased. Lipid staining of the aorta isolated from the rabbits showed that treatment with the A. victorialis extract decreased formation of atheromatous plaques on the intima of the aorta. In the experiment employing CETP transgenic mouse model, treatment with the A. victorialis extract decreased the levels of plasma total cholesterol and the tissue triglyceride levels in the heart. These results demonstrated that the ethanol extract of A. victorialis lowered serum cholesterol levels, tissue lipid contents and accumulation of cholesterol in the artery.

The hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of Allium victorialis (AV) leaf methanol extract were evaluated in a high fat diet (HFD) supplied mice. Changes on the serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein were examined. The effects were compared with those of a group given 250 mg/kg of metformin. After 91 days of a continuous HFD supply, the mice were showed marked hyperglycemia and hyperlipemia. However, these hyperglycemia and hyperlipemia induced by the HFD were inhibited by the AV extract treatment at the three different doses (62.5, 125 and 250 mg/kg). The results suggest that the AV methanol extract is beneficial for improving the diet-induced hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia in humans.
This study was conducted to investigate antioxidant activity and anti-immunological inflammatory effect of Allium victorialis subsp. platyphyllum extracts (AVPEs). Antioxidant activities of AVPEs were determined by free radical scavenging assay and reducing power test. Leaf-part extract had comparatively better antioxidant activity than other-part extracts. Antioxidant activity of extracts had protective effect for human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) against superoxide anions secreted from activated neutrophils. Also, we observed AVPEs had inhibitory effects on the adherence of monocytic THP-1 to HUVEC monolayer to the basal level. Inhibitory effect on cell adhesion was caused by suppression of tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}\;(TNF-{\alpha})-upregulated$ expression of vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and E-selectin in HUVECs. From these results, we expect to support the evidence of anti-immunological inflammatory effects of Allium victorialis subsp. platyphyllum (AVP) as a Korean traditional pharmaceutical.
This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidative activity and cytotoxicity of fermented Allium victorialis extract. The results were as follows; The total polyphenol content of A. victorialis extract was 2.63 mg/g, and that of fermented A. victorialis extract was 1.65 mg/g which decreased a little by fermentation. The total flavonoid content of A. victorialis extract was 57.77 mg/g, and that of fermented A. victorialis extract was 62.27 mg/g, and this could increase a little from fermentation. Electron donating ability of A. victorialis extract was lower than vitamin C(97.71%), but before fermentation it was 82.29% and after fermentation it became 82.40%. Nitrite scavenging ability of A. victorialis extract before and after fermentation showed lower numerical value than that of butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT) at pH 2.5 but that of A. victorialis extract expressed higher than that of BHT. Superoxide dismutase-like activity showed relatively low level, 15%. Nitrite production increased by A. victorialis extract but was inhibited after fermentation. Methyl diamphetamine (MDA) content was inhibited with increased concentration of A. victorialis extract compared with $H_2O_2$ treatment but there was not any difference before and after fermentation. Therefore, production of lipid peroxide(LPO) was inhibited by A. victorialis extract. Cell viability of fibroblast cell was tend to slightly decrease with increased concentration of A. victorialis extract, but not different with control.
Phytochemical investigation of the 80% MeOH extract from the leaves of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum resulted in the isolation of seventeen compounds; two terpenes, three norsesquiterpenes, one furofuran lignan, and eleven phenolic derivatives. Their chemical structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods to be trans-phytol (1), phytene-1,2-diol (2), icariside B2 (3), (6S,9S)-roseoside (4), sedumoside G (5), pinoresinol-4-O-glucoside (6), 2-methoxy-2-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethanol (7), 2-hydroxy-2-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethanol (8), Benzyl ${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (9), methyl ferulate (10), trans-ferulic acid (11), methyl-p-hydroxycinnamate (12), glucosyl methyl ferulate (13), linocaffein (14), siringin (15), 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-ethyl-O-${\beta}$-Dglucopyranoside (16), and pseudolaroside C (17). All compounds were isolated for the first time from this plant.
This study was conducted to gather the basic data on the alpine leek (Allium victorialis) for the expand of consumption and the production of its manufactured goods. Amino acid content in alpine leek leaves and various physiological activities were examined. Seventeen component amino acids and 38 free amino acids from alpine leek leaves were analyzed, and the total contents were 2,693.28 mg/100g for component amino acids and 535.39 mg/100g for free amino acids. Total phenolic compounds in the leaves of alpine leek showed the highest level from the methanol extract (37.7 mg/l), and followed by ethanol extract (31.9 mg/l) and hot water extract (25.4 mg/l). Total flavonoid contents in 1,000 mg/l extract was the highest in the methanol extract (22.2 mg/l). DPPH radical scavenging activity at 1,000 mg/l extract was high in the order of ethanol extract (51.6%), methanol extract (47.3%) and hot water extract (37.2%). nitrite radical scavenging activity Methanol extract from Allium victorialis leaves was the highest nitrite radical scavenging activity (79.5%). Hyperplasia suppression of lung cancer cells (Calu-6) and gastric cancer cells (SNU-601) by the methanol extract from the bulb of alpine leek were 99.9% in the extracting concentration of over 200 mg/l. No significant difference in antimicrobial activity among the 3 different solvents and extract concentrations was observed, and the inhibition zones against the gram-positive and negative microorganisms were ranged from 8.23 to 10.15 mm. It was concluded that physiological activities in a human body could be improved by the intake of alpine leek as a pharmaceutical material, and that it would be useful for the prevention of health risk such as lung and gastric cancers.

The antiobese effects of Allium victorialis (AV) leaf methanol extract were evaluated in a high fat diet (HFD) supplied mice. The changes on the body weight, food consumption, leptin and adiponectin levels as well as the periovarian fat weights and histopathology of adipocytes were examined. The effects were compared with those of a group given 250 mg/kg of metformin. After 91 days of a continuous HFD supply, the mice were significantly showed obesity. However, the obesity induced by the HFD was inhibited by the AV extract treatment at the three different doses (62.5, 125 and 250 mg/kg) respectively. The results suggest that the AV methanol extract is beneficial for improving the diet-induced obesity in humans.
