The effectiveness of mineral additives in suppressing alkali-silica reactivity has been studied in this work. Experimentation has been performed in accordance with the procedures prescribed in ASTM C 1567. In the scope of the investigation, a quarry aggregate which was reactive according to ASTM C 1260 was tested. In the experimental program, prismatic mortar specimens measuring $25{\times}25{\times}285mm$ were produced. Ten sets of production, three specimens for each set, were made. Length changes were measured at the end of 3, 7, 14 and 28 days and then expansions in percentage have been calculated. Fly ash, silica fume, and metakaolin have been used as cement replacement in different ratios for the testing of the alkali-silicate reactivity of the aggregate. In the mixes performed, the replacement ratios were 20%, 40%, and 60% for the fly ash, and 5%, 10%, and 15% for the silica fume, and 5%, 10%, and 15% for the metakaolin. Mixes without mineral additives were also produced for comparison. The beneficial effect in suppressing alkali-silica reactivity is highly noticeable as the replacement ratios of the mineral additives increase regardless of the type of the mineral additive used. Being more concise, the optimum concentrations of using silica fume and metakaolin in mortar in suppressing ASR is 10%, respectively, while it is 20% for fly ash.

The production of waste glasses has been increased with the development of industry. The utilization of waste glass for concrete can cause the concrete to be cracked and to be weakened due to an expansion by alkali-silica reaction(ASR). When used the fibers with waste glass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass. In this study, we conducted basic experimental research to analyze the possibilities of recycling of amber waste glass as fine aggregates for steel fiber reinforced concrete. Test results of fresh concrete. slump is decreased because grain shape is angular and air content is increased due to involving small size particles so much in waste glasses. Also. tensile and flexural strengths increased as the content of steel fibers increased. In conclusion, the content of waste glass below 40% is reasonable and usage of pertinent admixture is necessary to obtain workability or air content.

The purpose of this study was to review application of ASTM C 1260 for cement matrix with flyash and lithium nitrate using reactive aggregate. The experimental program included the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT: ASTM C 1260) for the slate which was evaluated as reactive aggregate by ASTM C 1260 at the previous study. The cement, which was substituted by 10, 20, 30% flyash containing less than 10% CaO, could control ASR expansion. From the experiment applying lithium nitrate to control ASR, the mortar bar containing lithium nitrate showed more than 0.1% expansion at 14 days. This is probably due to dissolution of lithium nitrate in NaOH solution during test periods. Thus, it is necessary to adopt another test method to verify the control effect of lithium nitrate against alkali-silica reaction.

Within the context of continuum mechanics, inelastic behaviours of constitutive responses are usually modelled by using phenomenological approaches. Elasto-plastic damage modelling is extensively used for concrete material in the case of progressive strength and stiffness deterioration. In this paper, a review of the main features of elasto-plastic damage modelling is presented for uniaxial stress-strain relationship. It has been reported in literature that the influence of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) can lead to severe degradations in the modulus of elasticity and compression strength of the concrete material. In order to incorporate the effects of ASR related degradation, in this paper the constitutive model of concrete is based on the coupled damage-plasticity approach where degradation in concrete properties can be captured by adjusting the yield and damage criteria as well as the hardening moduli related parameters within the model. These parameters are adjusted according to results of concrete behaviour from the literature. The effect of ASR on the dynamic behaviour of a beam and a column are illustrated under moving load and cyclic load cases.
In this study an implicit algorithm for modeling of propagation of macrocracks in 3D concrete structures suffering from alkali-silica reaction has been developed and implemented. The formulation of the problem prior to the onset of localized deformation is based on a chemo-elasticity approach. The localized deformation mode, involving the formation of macrocracks, is described using a simplified form of the strong discontinuity approach (SDA) that employs a volume averaging technique enhanced by a numerical procedure for tracing the propagation path in 3D space. The latter incorporates a non-local smoothening algorithm. The formulation is illustrated by a number of numerical examples that examine the crack propagation pattern in both plain and reinforced concrete under different loading scenarios.

The distresses of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) was recently reported at highway cement concrete pavement in Korea, which showed typical cracking and spalling patterns of ARS. Korea is was no longer safe zone against ASR, needding to find a control methodology against ASR. The purpose of this research was to provide a control methodology against ASR using mineral admixtures through a series of laboratory test program. Laboratory works included the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) by ASTM C 1260 regulation with five types of aggregate and three types of mineral admixtures (fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag and silica fume). The result of ASTM C 1260 test for five types of aggregates without mineral admixtures showed that Siltstone and Mudstone were found to be "reactive." Tuff and Andesite-1 were found to be "possiblely reactive." In case of concrete mixed with 10, 20, and 30% fly ash, all specimens except Mudstone mixed with 10% FA were found to be "non-reactive". In cases of concrete mixed with 30, 40, and 50% ground granulated blast-furnace slag and 5, 7.5, and 10% silica fume, all specimens were found to be "non-reactive." These results could be selectively applied in constructions in Korea.

The possibility of ASR(alkali-silica reaction) for coarse aggregates had known to be low up to recently in Korea. But the distress of ASR was identified and reported by ASTM C 1260 test. The purpose of this paper was to identify the effect of environmental conditions on length expansion of mortar-bar by alkali-silica reaction with KS F 2546 and ASTM C 1260 test. The results of this study were as following; The result of KS F 2546 test for five kinds of aggregates shows that all of them are non-reactive. But that of ASTM C 1260 test shows that all of aggregates except Andesite-2 are over possible reactive because of environmental condition such as external alkali ion by 1N NaOH, high temperature and humidity. The result of variety of NaOH concentration on ASTM C 1260 using Siltstone indicates that length expansion rate increases highly as NaOH concentration increases. And, comparison results of KS F 2546 for Siltstone with that of 0.00N NaOH experiment indicates that length expansion rate increases as temperature and humidity increases.

In this paper, a ferrosilicon by-product was evaluated to confirm the feasibility of recycling it as supplementary cementitious material of ordinary Portland cement in concrete. Three different levels of replacement ratio (10 %, 20 % and 30 % of total binder) were applied to find which is the most beneficial to be used as a binder. Ferrosilicon concrete was initially assessed at setting time and compressive strength. Durability was evaluated by the resistance to chloride penetration test(RCPT) and alkali-silica reaction(ASR) with a comparison to silica fume concrete due to their similarity in chemical composition. The porosimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy give information on the microstructural characteristics of the ferrosilicon concrete. It was found that 10 % ferrosilicon concrete has higher strength while 20 %, 30 % have lower strength than OPC concrete. However, chemical resistance to chloride attack is higher when replacement is increased. Compared to silica fume, the durability of ferrosilicon might be less efficient however, it is obviously beneficial than OPC. High SiO2 content in ferrosilicon results in producing more C-S-H gel which could make denser pore structure. Most of the risk of alkali silica reaction to silicate binders through length change tests was less than 0.2 %, and both mortar using ferrosilicon and silica fume showed better resistance to alkali silica reaction as the substitution rate increased.Reuse of industrial waste rather than producing highly refined additives might reduce environmental load during manufacture and save costs.
Typically, high lime fly ash (Class C) has been characterized as a fly ash, which at lower replacement levels is not as effective as the low lime (Class F) fly ash, in mitigating alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in portland cement concrete. The influence of fineness of Class C, obtained by grinding virgin fly ash into finer particles, on its pozzolanic reactivity and ASR mitigation performance was investigated in this study. In order to assess the pozzolanic reactivity of mortar mixtures containing virgin or ground fly ashes, the strength activity index (SAI) test and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted on the mortar cubes and paste samples, respectively, containing virgin fly ash or two ground fly ashes. In addition, to evaluate any improvement in the ASR mitigation of ground fly ashes compared to that of the virgin fly ash, the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) was conducted on the mortar mixtures containing different dosages of either virgin or ground fly ashes. In all tests crushed glass aggregate was used as a highly reactive aggregate. Results from this study showed that the finest fly ash (i.e., with an average particle size of 3.1 microns) could increase the flow ability along with the pozzolanic reactivity of the mortar mixture. However, results from this study suggested that the fineness of high lime fly ash does not seem to have any significant effect on ASR mitigation.

The successful completion of the present research would be achieved using ground waste glass (GWG) microparticles in self-consolidating concrete (SCC). Here, the influences of GWG microparticles as cementing material on mechanical and durability response properties of SCC are investigated. The aim of this study is to investigate the hardened mechanical properties, percentage of water absorption, free drying shrinkage, unit weight and Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) of binary blended concrete with partial replacement of cement by 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 wt% of GWG microparticles. Besides, slump flow, V-funnel, L-box, J-ring, GTM screen stability, visual stability index (VSI), setting time and air content tests were also performed as workability of fresh concrete indicators. The results show that the workability of fresh concrete was increased by increasing the content of GWG microparticles. The results showed that using GWG microparticles up to maximum replacement of 15 % produces concrete with improved hardened strengths. From the results, when the amount of GWG increased there was a gradual decrease in ASR expansion. Results showed that it is possible to successfully produce SCC with GWG as cementing material in terms of workability, durability and hardened properties.
