Inorganic alignment layer (IAL) was deposited on an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) by using reactive sputtering deposition method. After deposited, IAL was irradiated by $Ar^+$ ion beam (IB) for liquid crystal (LC) alignment. IAL treated by various conditions such as IB energy, IB incident angle, and IB irradiation time had excellent alignment property and electro-optical property the same as that of PI. We investigated into the stability of ion beam treated IAL after a lapse of long time. However IAL irradiated IB did not occur degradation of electro-optical property. The results implied that IAL irradiated IB was adopted as LC alignment layer instead of rubbed polyimide.

We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a-C:H thin film by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system for 30 sec under 30W rf power at a gas pressure of 1.4*10$\^$-1/ torr. A high pretilt angle of about 5 by ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment by the ion beam alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of 250$^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of NLC was observed above annealing temperature of 300$^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high LC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the ion beam alignment method on the a-C:H thin film by PECVD method as working gas at 30W rf bias condition can be achieved.

The aligned liquid crystals (LCs) display on SiNx thin films using ion-beam (IB) irradiation was studied with controllability ofpretilt angle depending on incident energies of the IB. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) was used to orient the LCs on SiNx alignment films. The LCs alignment property for the SiNx thin films were observed to verify the practical application potential (figure1). A good LCs alignment of vertical alignment LCs cells on SiNx thin film surfaces irradiated with incident IB energy of 1800eV was achieved. Also, a good LC alignment by the IB irradiation on the SiNx thin film surface was observed at an annealing temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. However, the alignment defects of the nematic liquid crystal was observed at an annealing temperature above $230^{\circ}C$. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of LCs on SiNx thin film surfaces irradiated with IB energy was used for the surface analysis.

It is widely investigated to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using non-contact alignment method such as ion-beam (IB) irradiation, UV alignment, and oblique deposition. Because conventional rubbing method has some drawbacks. These include defects from dust and electrostatic charges and rubbing scratch during rubbing process. In addition, rubbing method needs additional process to remove these defects. Therefore rubbing-free methods like ion-beam irradiation are strongly required. We studied LC alignment effect on poly imide surface by IB irradiation and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD). In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) (SE-150 from Nissan Chemical) surface was observed. We also achieved low pretilt angle as a function of ion-beam irradiation intensity. In addition, it can be obtained the good EO properties of the IB-aligned TN-LCD on PI surface. Some other experiments results and discussion will be included in the poster.

We present the structural, optical, and electrical properties of amorphous silicon suboxide (a-$SiO_x$) films grown on indium tin oxide glass substrates with a radio frequency magnetron technique from a polycrystalline silicon oxide target using ambient Ar. For different substrate-target distances (d = 8 cm and 10 cm), the deposition temperature effects were systematically studied. For d = 8cm, oxygen content in a-$SiO_x$ decreased with dissociation of oxygen onto the silicon oxide matrix; temperature increased due to enlargement of kinetic energy. For d = 10 cm, however, the oxygen content had a minimum between $150^{\circ}\;and\;200^{\circ}$. Using simple optical measurements, we can predict a preferred orientation of liquid crystal molecules on a-$SiO_x$ thin film. At higher oxygen content (x > 1.6), liquid crystal molecules on an inorganic liquid crystal alignment layer of a-$SiO_x$ showed homogeneous alignment; however, in the lower case (x < 1.6), liquid crystals showed homeotropic alignment.

Ion beam (IB)-induced alignment of inorganic materials has been investigated intensively as it provides controllability in a nonstop process for producing high-resolution displays[1][2]. LC orientation via ion-beam (IB) irradiation on the nitrogen doped diamond like carbon (NDLC) thin film deposited by physical deposition method-sputtering was embodied. The NDLC thin film that was deposited by sputter showed uniform LC alignment at the 1200eV of the ion beam intensity. The pretilt angle of LC on NDLC thin films was measured with various IB exposure time and angle. The maximum pretilt angle were showed with IB irradiation angle of $45^{\circ}$ and exposure time of 62.5 sec, respectively. To show NDLC thin film stability in high temperature, thermal stability test was proceeded. The uppermost of the thermal stability of NDLC thin film was $200^{\circ}C$. In this investigation, the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of LC on NDLC thin film were measured.
We demonstrated size control of Au nanoparticles by heat treatment and their use as a catalyst for single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNTs) growth with narrow size distribution. We used uniformly sized Au nanoparticles from commercial Au colloid, and intentionally decreased their size through heat treatment at 800 oC under atmospheric Ar ambient. ST-cut quartz wafers were used as growth substrates to achieve parallel alignment of the SWNTs and to investigate the size relationship between Au nanoparticles and SWNTs. After the SWNTs were grown via chemical vapor deposition using methane gas, it was found that a high degree of horizontal alignment can be obtained when the particle density is low enough to produce individual SWNTs. The diameter of the Au nanoparticles gradually decreased from 3.8 to 2.9 nm, and the mean diameter of the SWNTs also changed from 1.6 to 1.2 nm for without and 60 min heat treatment, respectively. Raman results reconfirmed that the prolonged heat treatment of nanoparticles yields thinner tubes with narrower size distribution. This work demonstrated that heat treatment can be a straightforward and reliable method to control the size of catalytic nanoparticles and SWNT diameter.

In this paper, the LC alignment characteristics of the NDLC thin film deposited by PECVD and sputtering were reported respectively. The NDLC thin film deposited using sputter showed uniform LC alignment at the 1200 eV of the ion beam intensity and pretilt angle was about $2^{\circ}$ while the NDLC thin film deposited using the PECVD showed uniform LC alignment and high pretilt angle at the 1800 eV of the ion beam intensity. Concerning the ion beam intensity, uniform LC alignment of the NDLC thin film deposited by the sputtering was achieved at the lower intensity. And the pretilt angle of the NDLC thin film deposited by sputter was higher than those of NDLC thin film that was deposited using the PECVD. The uppermost of the thermal stability of NDLC thin film was $200^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, NDLC thin film deposited by the PECVD showed stability at high temperature without defects, compared to NDLC thin film deposited by the sputter.

In this paper, we investigated the vertical alignment characteristics of liquid crystals (LCs) on fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs). For comparison, a commercialized homeotropic polyimide (PI) layer was used as an LC alignment layer. We confirmed the successful deposition of FSAMs and the change of FSAMs before and after rubbing treatment through contact angle measurement and atomic force microscopy. The optical transmittance spectrum of the FSAMs is similar to that of the homeotropic PI layer, which is a superior optical characteristic applicable to LC devices. When FSAMs were applied to the vertically aligned (VA) LC cell, uniform and vertical LC alignments were achieved. In addition, the voltage-transmittance characteristic of VA LC cell with FSAMs was superior to that of VA LC cell with the conventional homeotropic PI layers. These results indicate that the FSAMs are suitable as the homeotropic LC alignment layer for enhanced LC devices.

This letter focuses on the liquid crystal alignment characteristics according to the properties of hydrogenated amorphous carbon(a-C:H) thin film deposited by RPECVD(Remote Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) method using $C_2H_2$ and He gases. The properties of the deposited thin films were controlled by the ion beam irradiation time and ion beam energy. The results show that not ion beam energy but ion beam irradiation time plays an important role in the properties of a-G:H thin films. As the ion beam irradiation time increases, not only the sp2 concentration in a-G:H thin films but also liquid crystal pretilt angle was varied.
