A new damage identification technique using static displacement data is developed to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. In the conventional damage assessment techniques using dynamic response, it is usually difficult to obtain a significant natural frequencies variation from the measured data because the natural frequencies variation is intrinsically not sensitive to the damage of a bridge. In this proposed identification method, the stiffness reduction of the bridges can be estimated using the static displacement data measured periodically and a specific loading test is not required. The static displacement data due to the dead load of the bridge structure can be measured by devices such as a laser displacement sensor. In this study, structural damage is represented by the reduction in the elastic modulus of the element. The damage factor of the element is introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Finally, the proposed algorithm is verified using various numerical simulation and compared with other damage identification method. Also, the effect of noise and number of damaged elements on the identification are investigated. The results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient for damage identification of the bridges.

Recently, there has been enormous growth in the amount of commercial and scientific data, such as protein sequences, retail transactions, and web-logs. Such datasets consist of sequence data that have an inherent sequential nature. However, only a few of the existing clustering algorithms consider sequentiality. This study presents a method for clustering such sequence datasets. The similarity between sequences must be decided before clustering the sequences. This study proposes a new similarity measure to compute the similarity between two sequences using a sequence element. Two clustering algorithms using the proposed similarity measure are proposed: a hierarchical clustering algorithm and a scalable clustering algorithm that uses sampling and a k-nearest neighbor method. Using a splice dataset and synthetic datasets, we show that the quality of clusters generated by our proposed clustering algorithms is better than that of clusters produced by traditional clustering algorithms.
Structural cracks may cause variations in structural stiffness and thus produce bilinear vibrations to structures. This study examines the dynamic behavior of structures with breathing cracks. A generalized algorithm based on the finite element method and bilinear theory was developed to study the influence of a breathing crack on the vibration characteristic. All the formulae derived in the time domain were applied to estimate the period of the overall bilinear motion cycle, and the contact effect was considered in the calculations by introducing the penetration of the crack surface. Changes in the dynamic characteristics of cracked structures are investigated by assessing the variation of natural frequencies under different crack status in either the open or closed modes. Results in estimation with vibrational behavior variation are significant compared with the experimental results available in the literature as well as other numerical calculations.
A Harmony Search (HS) and Genetic Algorithms (GA), two powerful metaheuristic search techniques, are used for minimum weight designs of different truss structures by selecting suitable profile sections from a specified list taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). A computer program is coded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000-OAPI to obtain solution of design problems. The stress constraints according to AISC-ASD (Allowable Stress Design) and displacement constraints are considered for optimum designs. Three different truss structures such as bridge, dome and tower structures taken from literature are designed and the results are compared with the ones available in literature. The results obtained from the solutions for truss structures show that optimum designs by these techniques are very similar to the literature results and HS method usually provides more economical solutions in multi-element truss problems.

Researchers have elaborated several accurate methods to calculate member-end rotations or moments, directly, for bridge-type structures. Recently, the concept of rotation and moment propagation (RMP) has been presented considering bending flexibility, only. Through which, in spite of moment distribution method, all joints are free resulting in rotation and moment emit throughout the structure similar to wave motion. This paper proposes a new set of closed-form equations to calculate member-end rotation or moment, directly, comprising both shear and bending flexibility. Furthermore, the authors program the algorithm of Timoshenko beam theory cooperated with the finite element. Several numerical examples, conducted on the procedures, show that the method is superior in not only the dominant algorithm but also the preciseness of results.
For constructing virtual environment it is more natural to model object as deformable body than as rigid body. High accuracy of simulation of model and low-latency computational cost for real-time simulation should be guaranteed. We pre-compute Green function through finite element analysis of deformable body and it is possible to simulate deformation of body in real-time environment using Capacitance Matrix Algorithm. Also, the capacitance matrix algorithm enables to construct the haptic rendering which serves the reaction force through a haptic device. The Newmark scheme is used for the more realistic haptic rendering and dynamic simulation in real-time.

An improved boundary element method is presented for numerical analysis of hydrodynamic behavior of marine structures. A new algorithm for numerical solution of the finite depth free-surface Green function in three dimensions is developed based on multiple series representations. The whole range of the key parameter R/h is divided into four regions, within which different representation is used to achieve fast convergence. The well-known epsilon algorithm is also adopted to accelerate the convergence. The critical convergence criteria for each representation are investigated and provided. The proposed method is validated by several well-documented benchmark problems.

Surfaces of many engineering structures, specially, those of ships and airplanes are commonly fabricated as doubly curved shapes as well as singly curved surfaces to fulfill functional requirements. Given a three dimensional design surface, the first step in the fabrication process is unfolding or planar development of this surfaces into a planar shape so that the manufacturer can determine the initial shape of the flat plate. Also a good planar development enables the manufacturer to estimate the strain distribution required to form the design shape. In this paper, an algorithm for optimal approximated development of a general curved surface, including both singly and doubly curved surface is developed in the sense that the strain energy from its planar development to the design surface is minimized, subjected to some constraints. The development process is formulated into a constrained nonlinear programming problem, which is on basis of deformation theory and finite element. Constraints are subjected to characteristics of the fabrication method. Some examples on typical surfaces and the practical ship surfaces show the effectiveness of this algorithm.

This paper presents a parallel algorithm for the finite element analysis using relatively inexpensive transputer parallel system. The substructure method, which is highly parallel in nature, is used to improve the parallel computing efficiency by splitting up the whole structure into substructures. The proposed algorithm is applied to a simple two-dimensional magnetostatic problem. It is found that the more the number of transputer is increased, the more the total computation time is reduced. And the computational efficiency becomes better as the number of internal boundary nodes becomes smaller.

This paper proposes an optimum array configuration to improve null steering time for mobile controlled reception pattern antenna (CRPA) systems. The proposed array consists of a single reference element at the center and nine auxiliary elements arranged in a circular array. The array radius and the vertical positions of the center element are optimized using a genetic algorithm in conjunction with a constrained least-mean-square algorithm. The results demonstrate that the proposed array is suitable for mobile CRPA systems without significant side nulls in satellite directions.
