This study investigates the melting point and brazing properties of the aluminum (Al)-copper (Cu)-silicon (Si)-tin (Sn) alloy fabricated for low-temperature brazing based on the alloy design. Specifically, the Al-20Cu-10Si-Sn alloy is examined and confirmed to possess a melting point of approximately 520℃. Analysis of the melting point of the alloy based on composition reveals that the melting temperature tends to decrease with increasing Cu and Si content, along with a corresponding decrease as the Sn content rises. This study verifies that the Al-20Cu-10Si-5Sn alloy exhibits high liquidity and favorable mechanical properties for brazing through the joint gap filling test and Vickers hardness measurements. Additionally, a powder fabricated using the Al-20Cu-10Si-5Sn alloy demonstrates a melting point of around 515℃ following melting point analysis. Consequently, it is deemed highly suitable for use as a low-temperature Al brazing material.
Recently Al-Cu-P alloys are used to refine primary Si of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys. Because it has inside AlP compound that acts as nucleation site in the melt, Al-Cu-P alloy has good refinement effect in lower holding temperature and after shoter holding times. In this study Al-Cu-P refinement agent was made by mechanical alloying method. When Al-13.5wt%Cu-1.5wt%P was alloyed mechanically for 30hr in Ar atmosphere by high energy ball mill, it had the refinement effect that showed primary Si size of about $30{\mu}m$ in Al-20wt%Si at $760^{\circ}C$, treated for 15min.
This study investigated the growth behavior and characteristics of compounds formed at the interface between a liquid Al-Si-Cu alloy and solid cast iron. Through microstructural analyses, it was observed that various AlFe and AlFeSi phases are formed at the interface, and the relative proportion of each phase changes when small amounts of strontium are added to the Al alloy. The results of the microstructural analysis indicate that the primary phases of the interfacial compounds in the Al-Si-Cu base alloy are Al8Fe2Si and Al4.5FeSi. However, in the Sr-added alloys, significant amounts of binary AlFe intermetallic compounds such as Al5Fe2 and Al13Fe4 formed, in addition to the AlFeSi phases. The inclusion of Sr has a slight diminishing effect on the rate at which the interfacial compounds layer thickens during the time the liquid Al alloy is in contact with the cast iron. The study also discusses the nano-indentation hardness and micro-hardness of the interfacial phases.

For the development of a low-melting point filler metal for brazing aluminum alloy, we analyzed change of melting point and wettability with addition of Sn into Al-20Cu-10Si filler metal. DSC results showed that the addition of 5 wt% Sn into the Al-20Cu-10Si filler metal caused its liquidus temperature to decrease by about 30 oC. In the wettability test, spread area of melted Al-Cu-Si-Sn alloy is increased through the addition of Sn from 1 to 5 wt%. For the measuring of the mechanical properties of the joint region, Al 3003 plate is brazed by Al-20Cu-10Si-5Sn filler metal and the mechanical property is measured by tensile test. The results showed that the tensile strength of the joint region is higher than the tensile strength of Al 3003. Thus, failure occurred in the Al 3003 plate.
Metal matrix composites(MMCs) reinforced with hard particles have many potential application in aerospace structures, auto parts, semiconductor package, heat resistant panels, wear resistant materials and so on. In this work, the effect of SiC partioel sizes(50 and 100 ${\mu}m$) and additional elements such as Si, Cu and Ti on the microstructure and the wear property of $Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti)/SiC_p$ composites produced by pressureless infiltration method have been investigated using optical microscopy, scanning eletron microcopy(SEM) with EDS(energy dispersive spectrometry), hardness test, X-ray diffractometer(XRD) and wear test. In present study, the sound $Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti)/SiC_p$(50 and 100 ${\mu}m$) composites were fabricated by pressureless infiltration method. The $Al-5Mg-0.3Si-O.1Cu-O.1Ti/SiC_p$ composite with $50 {\mu}m$ size of SiC particle has higher hardness and better wear property than any other composite with $100{\mu}m$ size of SiC particle produced by pressureless infiltration method. The hardness and wear property of $Al-5Mg/SiC_p$(50 and 100 ${\mu}m$) composites were enhanced by the addition of Si, Cu and Ti in Al-5%Mg matrix alloy.
The influences of Cu and Mg addition on wear properties of SiC particulate reinforced Al-Si metal(alloy) matrix composites were investigated. Metal matrix composites were prepared by combination of compocasting and hot pressing techniques. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) The composite with Mg addition exhibits letter wear resistance than that with Cu addition. It is considered that Mg addition improved wettability of matal matrix composite by the strong segregation to the SiC / Al matrix interface. 2) After homogenization treatment, it was found that the interfacial segregation of Mg was predominant, while that of Cu was not detected. 3) The SiC / Al-11Si eutectic composite exhibits better wear resistance than the SiC / Al-6Si hypoeutectic composite does. 4) It seems that the increase in the amount of Mg addition affects on the uniform dispersion of SiC particulates, on the refinement of microstructure and on age hardening and these effects cause wear resistance improvement of composites.

The effects of annealing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Si alloys fabricated by high-energy ball milling (HEBM) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) were investigated. The HEBM-free sintered alloy primarily contained Mg2Si, Q-AlCuMgSi, and Si phases. Meanwhile, the HEBM-sintered alloy contains Mg-free Si and θ-Al2Cu phases due to the formation of MgO, which causes Mg depletion in the Al matrix. Annealing without and with HEBM at 500℃ causes partial dissolution and coarsening of the Q-AlCuMgSi and Mg2Si phases in the alloy and dissolution of the θ-Al2Cu phase in the alloy, respectively. In both alloys, a thermally stable α-AlFeSi phase was formed after long-term heat treatment. The grain size of the sintered alloys with and without HEBM increased from 0.5 to 1.0 ㎛ and from 2.9 to 6.3 ㎛, respectively. The hardness of the sintered alloy increases after annealing for 1 h but decreases significantly after 24 h of annealing. Extending the annealing time to 168 h improved the hardness of the alloy without HEBM but had little effect on the alloy with HEBM. The relationship between the microstructural factors and the hardness of the sintered and annealed alloys is discussed.
Variation of shape and size of solid particles and solute redistribution in Mg-9wt.%Al, AI-4.5wt.% Cu, and AI-7wt.%Si alloys were investigated when they were heated to semi-solid temperatures and held without stirring. In the case of Mg-9wt.% Al and Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloys, the polygonal shaped solid particles were agglomerated with non-uniform distribution, and there were no disappearance of the solid/solid boundary until the end of melting. But in the case of an Al-7wt.%Si alloys, two or three spherical shaped particles were coalesced or separated individually, and the coalesced particles had no solid/solid interface on the contrary to the prevous case. The maximum size of solid particles during isothermal heating at high temperature was smaller than that at lower temperature, but the time required to reach the maximum size at high temperature was shorter than that at lower temperature. The concentrations of main solute atom whose distribution coefficient is lower than 1, decreased in the primary solid particles as the liquid fraction increased, and the gradient of solute concentration was steeper in Mg-9wt.%Al alloy and Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloy than that of Al-7wt.%Si alloy.

In the compound casting between the aluminum alloy and the cast iron, the iron component may be dissolved from the cast iron during the process and mixed into the aluminum melt, thereby forming various iron-containing intermetallic compounds and significantly deteriorating the tensile properties of the aluminum alloy. On the other hand, unlike Fe, which is added as an impurity, Cu is added to improve the mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy. In this study, the change in microstructure and tensile properties of aluminum alloys due to the addition of Fe and Cu was investigated. A large amount of iron-containing compounds such as coarse Al5FeSi phases were formed when the iron content was 1% or more, and the tensile properties were significantly reduced. In the case of the aluminum alloy to which Cu was added, an Al2Cu phase was additionally formed and the tensile strength was clearly improved.
For comprehensive understanding of the formation behavior of $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phase in Al-Si-Cu alloys with the existence of Fe element, microstructure characterizations were performed using combined analysis of OM, SEM-EDS, XRD. Especially, experimental and predictive works on solidification events of $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phase as well as other phases formed together with $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ have been carried out by using DSC analysis and Java-based Materials Properties software (J. Mat. Pro.). Primary and eutectic $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phases were able to distinguish from each other on microstructures by their morphological features. Primary $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phase was seen to have rough surface perpendicular to growth direction, indicating free attachment of solute atoms in liquid state. On the other hand, the eutectic $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phase was formed with plain and straight surface during eutectic reaction together with $\alpha$-Al phase. The eutectic reaction of $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ and $\alpha$-Al phases was seen to be able to separate into each formation depending on cooling rate.
