A variety of metal oxides were coated by sol-gel process from their metal alkoxides on the ribbons of Co-based and Fe-based amorphous alloys, and the effects of surface oxide coating on the magnetic properties of the alloy are investigated. The core loss is found to be reduced significantly by the oxide coating, the loss reduction becoming more prominent at higher frequencies. The shape of the hystersis loop is also dependent upon the kind of the coated metal oxide. The coatings of MgO, SiO2, MgO·SiO2 and MgO·Al2O3 induce tensile stress into the Fe-based ribbon whereas those of BaO, Al2O3, CaO·Al2O3, SrO·Al2O3 and BaO·Al2O3 induce compressive stress. These results may be explained by the modification of domain structures via magnetoelastic interactions with the shrinkage stress induced by the sol-gel coating.

AlSi-Al$_2$O$_3$ composite layer was prepared by plasma spray on steel substrate. The composite powder for plasma spray was prepared by simple mechanical blending. The wear resistance of the composite layers and matrix aluminum alloy were performed in terms of size distribution of ceramic particles. Friction coefficients of AlSi were decreased with incorporation of $Al_2$O$_3$. The tribological properties of coated layers were affected by the size of incorporated $Al_2$O$_3$ particle. The reinforcement of $Al_2$O$_3$ particle into aluminum alloy matrix decreased the friction coefficient as well as wear loss.
In this study, the effect of coating thickness($20{\mu}m$ and $30{\mu}m$) on microstructure and tensile properties in Yb:YAG disk laser welds of Al-Si-coated boron steel (1.2mmt) was investigated. In the case of as welds, the quantity of ferrite was found to be higher in base metal than that in HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) and fusion zone, indicating, fracture occurrs in base metal, and the fracture position is unrelated to the coating thickness. Furthermore, yield strength, tensile strength of base metal and welded specimens showed similar behavior whereas elongation was decreased. On the other hand, base metal and HAZ showed existence of martensite after heat treatment, the fusion zone indicated the presence of full ferrite or austenite and ferrite during heat treatment ($900^{\circ}C$, 5min), After water cooling, austenite was transformed to martensite, and the quantity of ferrite in fusion zone was higher as compared with in base metal, resulting in sharply decrease of yield strength, tensile strength and elongation, which leads to fracture occured at fusion zone. In particular, results showed that because the concentration of Al was higher in 30um coating layer specimen than that of 20um coating specimen, after heat treatment, producing a higher quantity of ferrite was higher after heat treatment in the fusion zone; howevers, it leads to a lower tensile property.
This study is aimed at improving the plasma resistance of Al2O3 ceramics on which plasma resistant YAS(Y2O3-Al2O3-SiO2) frit is melt-coated using a simple heat-treatment process. For this purpose, the results of phase analysis and microstructural observations of the prepared YAS frits and the coating layers on the Al2O3 ceramics according to the batch compositions are compared and discussed with regard to the results of plasma resistance test. The prepared YAS frits consist of crystalline or amorphous or co-existing crystalline and amorphous phases according to the batch compositions, depending on the role and content of each raw material. The prepared YAS frit is melt-coated on the densely sintered Al2O3 ceramics, resulting in a dense coating layer with a thickness of at least ~ 80 ㎛. The YAS coating layer consists of crystalline YAG(Y3Al5O12), Y2Si2O7, and Al2O3 phases, and YAS glass phase. Plasma resistance of YAS coated Al2O3 ceramics is strongly dependent on the content of the YAG(Y3Al5O12) and Y2Si2O7 crystalline phases in the coating layer, especially on the content of the YAG phase. Comparing the weight loss of YAS coating ceramics with values obtained for commercial Y2O3, Al2O3, and quartz ceramics, the plasma resistance of the YAS coating ceramics is 6 times higher than that of quartz, 2 times higher than that of Al2O3, and 50 % of the resistance of Y2O3.

Friction and wear at ceramic coated surfaces of aluminum alloy were experimentally studied using a Ring-on-Block wear test machine. Ceramic materials coated on aluminum alloy surfaces were WC, CrC, $Al_{2}O_{3}$ by a plasma spray; and $Al_{2}O_{3}$,$Al_{2}SiO_{5}$, $Na_{2}B_{4}O_{7}$,$Na_{4}P_{2}O_{7}$, and $Al_{2}O_{3}-ZrO_{2}$ composite coating by an Anodic Spark Depositon. They were tested under the sliding wet contact and compared with aluminum alloys and steels. Test results showed that ceramic coated surfaces, in general, have better anti-wear property than those of aluminum alloys due to increase in the surface hardness ; however, they also showed higher coefficients of friction and changes in wear mechanisms, resulting in brittle fractures.
Ni-Al intermetallic coating technology is an available method for the strengthening of aluminum substrate. In this study, Ni-Al intermetallics were coated on an aluminum substrate through a reaction synthesis process at a temperature lower than melting point of aluminum. And the sliding wear properties of the coatings have been investigated to verify their usability and compared the wear properties with those of a cast Al-12.5%Si alloy and an anodizing layer on aluminum. Results show that the wear rate of the coating layer greatly increased at 1 m/s and 1.5 m/s when compared with that of the cast Al-12.5%Si alloy. Much pitting damages were observed on the worn surfaces at these sliding speeds, unlike at other sliding speeds. The wear of the intermetallic coating layer at these sliding speeds seems to be increased by pitting as a consequence of adhesion. In contrast, wear of the coating layer at other speeds hardly occurs, regardless of wear periods. Nevertheless, the wear properties of the intermetallic coating layer on the aluminum substrate through the reaction synthesis process are more stable than those of anodized aluminum and are superior to those of the cast Al-12.5%Si alloy in a steady-state wear period.
$Li_2SiO_3$ was used as a coating material to improve the electrochemical performance of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$. $Li_2SiO_3$ is not only a stable oxide but also an ionic conductor and can, therefore, facilitate the movement of lithium ions at the cathode/electrolyte interface. The surface of the $Li_2SiO_3$-coated $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ was covered with island-type $Li_2SiO_3$ particles, and the coating process did not affect the structural integrity of the $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ powder. The $Li_2SiO_3$ coating improved the discharge capacity and rate capability; moreover, the $Li_2SiO_3$-coated electrodes showed reduced impedance values. The surface of the lithium-ion battery cathode is typically attacked by the HF-containing electrolyte, which forms an undesired surface layer that hinders the movement of lithium ions and electrons. However, the $Li_2SiO_3$ coating layer can prevent the undesired side reactions between the cathode surface and the electrolyte, thus enhancing the rate capability and discharge capacity. The thermal stability of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ was also improved by the $Li_2SiO_3$ coating.

Sintered composites of Al-8wt%Cu-10vol%SiCp were deformed by repressing or equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) at room temperature, $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. Repressing produced more densification than ECAP but resulted in much lower transverse rupture strengths. In both cases, deformation at room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$, resulted in much lower strengths than deformation at $600^{\circ}C$, and also caused the fracturing of some SiC particles. The higher bend strengths and less SiC fracturing at $600^{\circ}C$ are attributable to the presence of an Al-Cu liquid phase during deformation. The employment of copper coated SiC instead of bare SiC particles for preparing the composites was found not improving the properties.

Stainless steel 316L (STS 316L) is widely used as a material of biopsy needle. However it has a side effect that tissue can be damaged by electrochemical operation between tissue and STS 316L. Many studies have been made on the ceramic coating of biopsy needle to reduce the side effect. In this study, STS 316L was coated with three bioceramics, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2$ and $ZrO_2$ using a RF magnetron sputtering method. The effects of ceramic coating on the electrical conductivity and coating strength of ceramic-coated STS 316L were investigated. The results showed that the electrical conductivity of ceramic-coated STS 316L was much lower than that of uncoated STS 316L. The coating strength of $ZrO_2$-coated STS 316L was 30% and 70% higher, respectively than those of $Al_2O_3$-coated STS 316L and $SiO_2_3$-coated STS 316L.
