  • The advent of private railroad corporations presented many problems on administration's effectiveness. These brought an effect on safety management too. Most public railroad corporations maintain their rolling stocks and facilities by their own workers. On the other hand, private railroad corporations depend on outsourcing to cut down the cost of maintenance. But they have similar safety management systems. Therefore we investigated the gap between the two types of corporations, focusing on workers' safety attitude and proposed solutions to improve safety management systems in private railroad corporations.

  • With the growth of airline management, as well as computer and IT security, the international trade in this modern society has been rapidly increasing, Along with the advancing, airplanes have become a universal means of communication. However, the complications associated with airplane safety have also been brought up as a result, the most concerning of which is terrorism. One of the main counterplans for preventing terrorism is Ground security activities the core of Ground security activities is absolute safety for passengers in both passenger terminal and freight terminal. Subastral security refers to physical protection, proximity control and 100% security search and freight guarding of the passengers' possessions, and the personnel's duties to perform such jobs are be! coming more crucial. On the other hand, Airport security check has bee n gradually developing since the 1960's, when hijacking began to take place. Although the airports have been providing more safe and comfortable services to their customers, terrorism is still happening today. When Ground security activities is minute, the users feel displeasure and discomfort, yet considering solely their convenience can brings problems in achieving safety. Since the 9.11 terror in 2001, the idea of improving and strengthening airport security was reinforced and a considerable amount of estate is being spent today for invention and application of new technology. Various nations, including the United States, have been improving their systems of security through public services; public police department is actively carrying out their duties in airports as well. In San Francisco International Airport, private police department is in charge of collection of data, national events, VIP protection, law enforcement, cooperation within facilities, daily-based patrol and traffic control. Under guidance and supervision of national organizations, such as TSA, general police department interprets X-Rays, operates metal detectors, checks passports or IDs and observes reactions to explosives. Under these circumstances, studies about advancement of cooperation and duties of general police department and private police department necessitated: especially about private police department and their training for searching equipments, decrease in number of turn over rate, invention of technology and prior settlement in estate for security. The privacy of the public, who make up the major population of airport passengers, must also be minimized. In the following research, the activities of police departments in San Francisco International Airport will be analyzed in order to understand recent actions of the United States on airport security.

  • This paper proposes a case study of applying to DO-278A, which is a software development standard of ground aviation equipment in communication, navigation, surveillance/air traffic management (CNS/ATM) domain, in order to develop software of Advanced surface movement, guidance and control system (A-SMGCS). It explains considerations to application of DO-278A standard, discusses how to tailor processes or requirements specified in DO-278A in detail, and explain tailored results. And it also summary problems or issues occurred during application of DO-278A, which can be appeared when DO-278A is applied to for the first time by any development part. These are required considerations in order to reduce trial and error. To the conclusion, it explains lessons learned from application of DO-278A and suggest how to solve these problems or issues.

  • Runway and taxiway is base facilities for aircraft take off and landing and runway capacity is one of major factor for airport capacity. Runway occupancy time is affect on the runway capacity. The identification of aircraft using taxiway by analysis of airport ground surveillance data and the measurement of pass time on the points is general method for the confirmation of the runway occupancy time. This study is runway occupancy time analysis of landing airplane using ADS-B message, in this study we surveyed landing aircraft runway occupancy time and analysis of serviced record using taxiway include rapid exit taxiway. The result of analysis is to confirm the different of landing direction and aircraft category on the same runway caused by structure of airport. Also the result of runway occupancy time analyzed data, it is base input data for the air transportation simulation.

Development for Estimation Model of Runway Visual Range using Deep Neural Network (심층신경망을 활용한 활주로 가시거리 예측 모델 개발)

  • The runway visual range affected by fog and so on is one of the important indicators to determine whether aircraft can take off and land at the airport or not. In the case of airports where transportation airplanes are operated, major weather forecasts including the runway visual range for local area have been released and provided to aviation workers for recognizing that. This paper proposes a runway visual range estimation model with a deep neural network applied recently to various fields such as image processing, speech recognition, natural language processing, etc. It is developed and implemented for estimating a runway visual range of local airport with a deep neural network. It utilizes the past actual weather observation data of the applied airfield for constituting the learning of the neural network. It can show comparatively the accurate estimation result when it compares the results with the existing observation data. The proposed model can be used to generate weather information on the airfield for which no other forecasting function is available.

A Study on Designs for the Pulley and Electric-wire for 'HELLO' Artwork at Incheon Airport Terminal 2 (인천공항 제2여객터미널 'HELLO' 작품의 풀리와 전선의 디자인에 관한 연구)

  • This study focused on the designs for the pulley and electric cables for Hello, the artwork displayed at the Great Hall at the Incheon International AirportTerminal 2. This study presented designs for the pulley and cables, and the parts were applied and tested to analyze their durability and problems. Improvements were made for the final production of the work and three samples were produced respectively for the designs of the pulley and the cables. As are sult, this study found that for the pulley, the most efficient design was to fix the cables at its center. In the case of cables, it was most efficient touse flat cables with a wire in the core. These designs were applied to the artwork Hello, which is currently installed at the Great Hall at the Incheon International Airport Terminal 2. Future research will be conducted to make further improvements to the cable sand the pulley.

Development of a Practical Algorithm for Airport Ground Movement Routing (공항 지상이동 경로 탐색을 위한 실용 알고리즘 개발)

  • Motivated by continuous increase in flight demand, awareness of the importance in developing ways to increase aircraft operational efficiency on the airport movement area has been raised. This paper proposes a new routing algorithm for providing the shortest path in a right time, enhancing the aircraft movement efficiency. Many researches on developing algorithms have been performed, for example, Dijkstra algorithm and $A^*$ algorithm. The Dijkstra algorithm provide optimal solution but could possibly provide it with a cost of relatively longer computation time. On the other hand, $A^*$ algorithm does not guarantee the optimality of a solution. In this paper, we suggest a Hybrid $A^*$ algorithm, incorporating both algorithms to eliminate the weaknesses. Rigorous test shows the proposed Hybrid $A^*$ algorithm may achieve shorter computing time and optimality in searching the shortest path.

Decision of Available Soil Depth Based on Physical and Hydraulic Properties of Soils for Landscape Vegetation in Incheon International Airport

  • Decision of available soil depth based on soil physical and hydraulic properties for the $3^{rd}$ Landscape Vegetation Project in the Incheon International Airport was attempted. The soil samples were collected from the 8 sites at different depths, 0-20 and 20-60cm, for the three project fields, A, B, and C area. Physical and chemical properties including particle size distribution, organic matter content and electrical conductivity were analyzed. Hydrological properties including bulk density and water holding capacity at different water potential, -6 kPa, -10 kPa, -33 kPa, and -1500 kPa were calculated by SPAW model of Saxton and Rawls (2006), and air entry value was calculated by Campbell model (1985). Based on physical and hydrological limitation, feasibility and design criteria of soil depth for vegetation and landfill were recommended. Since the soil salinity of the soil in area A area was $19.18dS\;m^{-1}$ in top soil and $22.27dS\;m^{-1}$ in deep soil, respectively, landscape vegetation without amendment would not be possible on this area. Available soil depth required for vegetation was 2.51 m that would secure root zone water holding capacity, capillary fringe, and porosity. Available soil depth required for landscape vegetation of the B area soil was 1.51 m including capillary fringe 0.14 m and available depth for 10% porosity 1.35 m. The soils in this area were feasible for landscape vegetation. The soil in area C was feasible for bottom fill purpose only due to low water holding capacity.

  • This study measured the environmental efficiency of 21 international airports based on sustainability reports issued by each airport for 2018. As many sectors in the industry paid attention to social and environmental responsibilities, airport operators comprise one of the leading sectors that streamlined their facilities to become increasingly sustainable and environmental. Nevertheless, studies on the environmental operations of airports are insufficient compared with studies on economic or operational efficiency. Therefore, the current study aims to determine any possible improvement in the environmental inefficiency of airports with the utilization of directional distance function (DDF) and to examine operational efficiency with the application of the data envelopment analysis (DEA). The majority of airports have operated their facilities efficiently, but not all have effectively managed pollutants generated by airports. Furthermore, many airports can still potentially reduce CO2 and water consumption. This study suggests several implementable environmental improvements to the aviation sector. Moreover, other industrial sectors may use the research as a benchmark for enhancing environmental efficiency.

  • Change orders represent one of the largest sources of cost growth on construction projects, but an efficient change management control system can help the projects steer clear of the constant construction changes. This study was performed to achieve a better understanding of all changes and to develop a new set of Best Practices using process mapping techniques. The project data for this research were collected from case studies of aviation projects implemented in Houston, Texas at Bush Intercontinental Airport. The findings and contributions of this research should help owners and project managers determine and identify major causes that impact project budget and schedule and implement solutions prior to them surfacing.
