The Roordynamic feasibility of Micro Power System supported by air foil bearings is investigated. The Micro Power System is new portable power source based on brayton cycle, which consists of compressor, turbine, generator, and combustion chamber. In this paper, the analysis of Rotordynamic characteristics of Micro Power System is performed based upon the bearing equilibrium position, Campbell diagram and stability. As a result, it is demonstrated that the air foil bearings could be adopted well to the Micro Power System. However, for more stable operation at target running speed, the damping characteristics of air foil bearing should be enhanced.
The high precision spindle is essential fer mass and low cost production of aspherical glass lens. Especially, in the grinding process of micro glass lens the performance of the spindle determine the machined surface quality. For the aspheric micro glass lens grinding, we design and make a high precision spindle. We use air bearings for high speed and low motion errors of the spindle. And the driving mechanism is an air turbine to remove heat generation. In this study, we make basic performance requirements of the spindle through benchmarking. And we confirm the requirements by basic machining test. We test air consumption, static stiffness, run-out and vibration of the spindle.
In this research, we propose an energy harvesting structure with a flexible blade element vibrating at its first mode to maximize the power output of the piezoelectric material. For this purpose, a piezoelectric patch was attached on the blade element used in a small-scale wind turbine, and air load was applied with a suitable angle of attack in the stall zone. The aerodynamic load created by air excitation vibrates the blade element in its first natural frequency and maximizes the voltage output of the piezoelectric patch. The variation of power outputs with respect to electrical resistance, air speed, and extra mass is experimentally investigated for various cases. An analytical model is constituted using a single-mode blade element with piezoelectric patch dynamics, and the power outputs of the obtained model are compared with experimental results.
This paper presents a numerical study on the rotordynamic analysis of a dual-spool turbofan engine in the context of blade defect events. The blades of an axial-type aeroengine are typically well aligned during the compressor and turbine stages. However, they are sometimes exposed to damage, partially or entirely, for several operational reasons, such as cracks due to foreign objects, burns from the combustion gas, and corrosion due to oxygen in the air. Herein, we designed a dual-spool rotor using the commercial 3D modeling software CATIA to simulate blade defects in the turbofan engine. We utilized the rotordynamic parameters to create two finite element Euler-Bernoulli beam models connected by means of an inter-rotor bearing. We then applied the unbalanced forces induced by the mass eccentricities of the blades to the following selected scenarios: 1) fully balanced, 2) crack in the low-pressure compressor (LPC) and high pressure compressor (HPC), 3) burn on the high-pressure turbine (HPT) and low pressure compressor, 4) corrosion of the LPC, and 5) corrosion of the HPC. Additionally, we obtained the transient and steady-state responses of the overall rotor nodes using the Runge-Kutta numerical integration method, and employed model reduction techniques such as component mode synthesis to enhance the computational efficiency of the process. The simulation results indicate that the high-vibration status of the rotor commences beyond 10,000 rpm, which is identified as the first critical speed of the lower speed rotor. Moreover, we monitored the unbalanced stages near the inter-rotor bearing, which prominently influences the overall rotordynamic status, and the corrosion of the HPC to prevent further instability. The high-speed range operation (>13,000 rpm) coupled with HPC/HPT blade defects possibly presents a rotor-case contact problem that can lead to catastrophic failure.
The objective of this paper is to propose a modelling of a small compressed air energy storage system, which drives an induction generator based on a field-oriented control (FOC) principle for a renewable power generation. The proposed system is a hybrid technology of energy storage and electrification, which is developed to use as a small scale of renewable energy power plant. The energy will be transferred from the renewable energy resource to the compressed air energy by reciprocating air compressor to be stored in a pressurized vessel. The energy storage system uses a small compressed air energy storage system, developed as a small unit and installed above ground to avoid site limitation as same as the conventional CAES does. Therefore, it is suitable to be placed at any location. The system is operated in low pressure not more than 15 bar, so, it easy to available component in country and inexpensive. The power generation uses a variable speed induction generator (IG). The relationship of pressure and air flow of the compressed air, which varies continuously during the discharge of compressed air to drive the generator, is considered as a control command. As a result, the generator generates power in wide speed range. Unlike the conventional CAES that used gas turbine, this system does not have any combustion units. Thus, the system does not burn fuel and exhaust pollution. This paper expresses the modelling, thermodynamic analysis simulation and experiment to obtain the characteristic and performance of a new concept of a small compressed air energy storage power plant, which can be helpful in system designing of renewable energy electrification. The system was tested under a range of expansion pressure ratios in order to determine its characteristics and performance. The efficiency of expansion air of 49.34% is calculated, while the efficiency of generator of 60.85% is examined. The overall efficiency of system of approximately 30% is also investigated.
The dynamic performance analyses and tests for a 50kW turbo-generator (KIMM-TG50) were carried out. The operating concept of this machine is that it gets the initial driving force from the built-in motor-generator until it reaches its self-sustaining speed of 40,000 rpm, and then the driving mode is changed to self-operating mode by the combustor installed between the centrifugal compressor and the turbine. Due to winding mistake of motor-generator, the system could go only up to 22000 rpm by the motor so that high pressure air externally fed into the turbine was utilized to get the system to run up to 62,000 rpm thereafter. The vibration data collected during the tests revealed that the first bending critical speed is in near 5,600 rpm as predicted in the design stage of the rotor-bearing system, and that there were no other identifiable critical speeds up until 62,000 rpm due to high damping from the squeeze film damper-bearings supporting the rotor. This paper presented some of the experimental results along with dynamic performance predictions made in the design stage as a part of progress being made.
Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle-installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction stream line inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. This paper describes operation of experience and numerical analysis composed similar condition with real high pressure feedwater heater. This study applied several impingement baffle plates to feedwater heater same as previous study. In addition, it shows difference of pressure distribution and value between single phase and two phase based on experience and numerical analysis.

This paper proposes a novel diffuser design for Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbines (DAWT) based on the blunt trailing edge airfoil AF300. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out to measure the performance of the AF300 diffuser against diffusers made with the shape of other high performance low wind speed airfoils. The results show that the proposed diffuser produces a greater air mass flow increase through the plane of the turbine than the other diffusers and it can be used to increase the performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine.
The effect of coating thickness on the contact fatigue and wear of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are investigated in this study. The same bondcoat material thickness (250 ㎛) are used for each sample, which allows the effect of the coating thickness of the topcoat to be investigated. TBCs with different coating thicknesses (200, 400, and 600 ㎛) are prepared by changing processing parameters such as the feeding rate of the feedstock, spraying speed, and spraying distance during APS(air plasma spray) coating. The damage size on the surface are strongly affected by the coating thickness effect. Although the damage size from contact fatigue using a spherical indenter diminish at a TBC of 200 ㎛, a high wear resistance such as a low friction coefficient and little mass change are found at a TBC of 600 ㎛. These results indicate that the coating thickness strongly affects the mechanical behavior in TBCs during gas turbine operation.
