This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of rice cover crop cropping systems on rice root growth in a rice field as affected by conventional tillage without rice straw or green manure crop treatment (CTFS, check plot), no-tillage without cover crops (NTNT), no-tillage amended with rape (NTRA), no-tillage amended with rye (NTRY), no-tillage amended with hairyvetch (NTHV), and no-tillage amended with Chinese milk vetch (NTCM). In 0-5 cm soil depth, dry weight of root in NTRS ($128g\;m^{-2}$) was significantly higher than in the other plots (p<0.05) at harvesting stage. In addition, content of active organic matter at 0-5 cm soil depth was $1,684g\;m^{-2}$ in NTCM, $1,309g\;m^{-2}$ in NTRA, $1,295g\;m^{-2}$ in NTRS, $1,072g\;m^{-2}$ in NTRY, $917g\;m^{-2}$ in NTHV, $434g\;m^{-2}$ CTFS, and $426g\;m^{-2}$ in NTNT treatment. In no-tillage rice cover crop cropping system, our findings suggest that NTRS and NTCM should be enhanced root growth and active organic matter in paddy field.
In order to select the demonstration farm site for agricultural investment by Korean fund, 14 sites were investigated by soil morphological characteristics and were evaluated by rating method in the Oudomxai province of Laos. Land evaluation was carried out by using eight factors, such as site accessibility, soil erosion susceptibility, easiness of farm mechanization, irrigation water obtainability, suitability of soil physical and chemical properties for crop growth, cost for establishment of farm foundation and land obtainability. In addition, one site to have been highly ranked was soil physico-chemically studied for farm planning. The site of heavy clayey soil has hydraulic conductivity of 26.27~40.64 cm $day^{-1}$, organic content of lower than 14 g $kg^{-1}$, available phosphate content of lower than 3 mg $kg^{-1}$, exchangeable cations of lower than 0.38, 11 and 3.1 cmolc $kg^{-1}$ in K, Ca and Mg, respectively. Major important limitations for establishment of demonstration farm were concluded as heavy soil-texture, high soil erodibility, low organic matter and phosphate contents, and insufficient irrigation water in the Oudomxai province of Laos.

Porous mineral coating have been fabricated and applied for basic research on their slow release action to a fertilizer. Feldspar was selected as raw mineral for the coating and two different particle sizes of powder were prepared. Slow-release action was estimated by using a potassium sulfate fertilizer. Spherical pellets were prepared with a pan-type pelletizer and then screened into sizes ranging 1.4 to 2.35mm. While the fertilizer pellets were rotated in the pelletizer again, the feldspar powder and 0.5% polyvinyl alcohol solution were simultaneously sprayed on the pellets. The fertilizer pellets coated with feldspar powder were fabricated. The pellets were heated to increase their strength and screened to sort by coating thickness. Potassium releasing tests were conducted for 40 days and the performance for slow-release action was estimated as functions of the heating temperature, coating thickness and raw mineral powder size. The Burst effect caused high initial releasing rate. Releasing kinetics was proportional to concentration of potassium in pellets. The pellet that was fabricated with $27.4{\mu}m$-sized feldspar and heated at $1050^{\circ}C$ showed a releasing rate of 43% on the 40th day.
There was no difference between eco-friendly and conventional cultivated soils in the chemical properties. But $Av.P_2O_5$ contents in the eco-friendly cultivated soils were slightly higher than that of conventional cultivated soils. In the conventional cultivated soils, the coefficient of correlation between spore density and soil chemical properties such as pH, EC, OM, $Av.P_2O_5$, K${\surd}$(Ca+Mg) and CEC was $-0.48^*$, -0.05, $0.48^*$, -0.12, -0.13, 0.31 respectively. But, in the eco-friendly cultivated soils was $-0.68^*$, $0.69^*$, $0.96^{**}$, $0.75^*$, $0.63^*$, $0.92^{**}$ respectively. The spore density was 140 spores $30g^{-1}$ in the eco-friendly cultivated soils and 60 spores $30g^{-1}$ in the conventional cultivated soils. Infection ratio of intercellular hypha was higher than that of arbuscular and vesicular among the fungi structures within the root. Suncheon and Cheonan as eco-friendly cultivated soil were higher than GimJe and NamWon in infection ratio.

This study compares the long-term hydrological cycles of the Seolmacheon and Cheongmicheon basin by applying the structural equation model (SEM). These two basins are found different especially in their land-use pattern. Both basins have the actual evapotranspiration data measured by the eddy-covariance method as well as the rainfall and runoff data. The length of the data considered in this study is nine years from 2010 to 2018. The structure of the SEM is determined by considering the correlations among the data as well as the general knowledge on the hydrological cycle. As a result, a total of three SEMs are applied sequentially to analyze their fittings. As irony would have it, two basins are found to be similar in the application of one SEM, but different in the application of another. Especially, when considering the feedback process between precipitation and evapotranspiration, two basins are found to be very different. That is, the feedback process between precipitation and evapotranspiration is found to be significant in the Cheongmicheon basin where the portion of agricultural area (i.e., paddy) is more than 40%.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of photoperiod and light intensity on milk production, milk composition, hormones levels and blood metabolites indices of Korean Holstein dairy cows in automatic milking system (AMS). A total of 24 Holstein dairy cows were selected and used to four subsequent treatments for the experimental periods of 60 days. The light programs consisted of (1) Control: the natural photoperiod with 14.2 h of the light period and 9.4 h of the dark period (below 10 Lux); (2) T1: 16 h of the long day photoperiod (LDPP) with 50 Lux of light; (3) T2: 16 h of LDPP with 100 Lux of light; and (4) T3: 16 h of LDPP with 200 Lux of light, respectively. Importantly, there was a significant difference in the thurl activity of dairy cows between the different light intensity programs (p < 0.05). Milk yield was higher in T1 and T2 (40.80 ± 1.71 and 39.90 ± 2.02 kg/d, respectively) than those of Control and T3 (32.18 ± 1.51 and 35.76 ± 2.80 kg/d, respectively) (p < 0.05), but DMI was lower in T1, T2, and T3 compared to Control (p < 0.05). Also, milk fat percentage, the contents of milk fat and total solids were higher in T2 than those in the others (p < 0.05). The average daily melatonin level in milk was high to T3 (28.20 ± 0.43 pg/mL), T2 (24.62 ± 0.32 pg/mL), T1 (19.78 ± 0.35 pg/mL), and Control (19.36 ± 0.45 pg/mL) in order (p < 0.05). Also, the cortisol levels in milk and blood were lower in treatment groups than in Control (p < 0.05). The results of this study showed that it will be effective to improve the milk yield and milk composition, and to reduce the stress of dairy cows when the light conditions regulate to extend the photoperiod to 16 h at a light emitting diode (LED) intensity of 100 Lux under the AMS in dairy farm.
Hygienic behavior of Honey bees, Apis mellifera, was evaluated by uncapping and removing ability of dead broods from the nest. Hygienic behavior is originated from quantitative traits, which are expected to express key roles in colony defense against mite parasites and bacterial and fungal diseases. It is regarded as one of important characteristics of honey bee's resistance to parasites and pathogens. In this study, five inbreed and two hybrid lines of A. mellifera, the former five inbreed lines, which have been reared for over eight years at the National Academy of Agricultural Science in Korea, and the latter two hybrid lines, which have been bred by crossing between the inbreed lines, were investigated on their hygienic behavior by a pin-killed brood assay at 12hrs and 24hrs after treatment. The results indicated that after 12hrs one inbred line was proved to be hygienic (removal rate of dead brood >90%), three inbred and two hybrid lines showed intermediate behavior, and one inbred line belonged to non-hygienic (removal rate of dead brood <70%). However, after 24hrs, only one line was considered to be intermediate as removal rate was below 90%, thus all except this line had shown hygienic behavior.
In previous studies, we reported QTLs for grain weight (GW), qGW3 and for spikelets per panicle (SPP), qSPP3 linked to RM60 on chromosome 3 using advanced backcross lines derived from a cross between Oryza sativa ssp. Indica cv. Milyang 23 and O. glaberrima. The O. glaberrima alleles at this locus increased GW and spikelets per panicle in the Milyang 23 background. To further confirm and narrow down the position of the QTLs on chromosome 3, substitution mapping was performed using five lines containing the target O. glaberrima segment on chromosome 3. The size and position of the O. glaberrima segment on chromosome 3 were different in each line. These lines possessed 3-10 non-target O. glaberrima introgressions in the Milyang 23 background. These five lines were evaluated for seven agronomic traits including 1,000 grain weight and spikelets per panicle and also genotyped with seven SSR markers. Four lines were informative in delimiting the position of QTLs, qGW3 and qSPP3. Two lines with the O. glaberrima segment flanked by SSR markers, RM60 and RM523 displayed significantly higher values than Milyang 23 in GW and SPP whereas two lines without that O. glaberrima segment displayed no difference in GW and SPP compared to Milyang 23. The result indicates that two QTL, qGW3 and qSPP3 are located in the interval between RM60 and RM523 which are 1.2-Mb apart. Introgression lines having QTLs, qGW3 and qSPP3 would be useful materials not only to indentify the relationship between these two yield QTLs, but also to develop high yielding variety via marker-aided selection technology.
Ginseng has been recognized as a lifespan extending medicine which has been regarded as one of the medicines classified as top medicines, as the Boncho (medical herbs) study which is influenced by the idea of guidance's costume and food concept mainly in China is gaining its bona fide form. As the demand for ginseng has been expanded to other levels, the demand for ginseng has been increasing. Ginseng from the nature reached its supply chain limit due to its extinction and difficulty of picking, so it translated into ginseng cultivation of economy rather than harvesting in nature. After the start of ginseng cultivation, the ginseng cultivation was further enhanced by the rapid development of processing methods such as white-ginseng and red-ginseng, and the surge of consumption due to the traditional belief in ginseng drug efficacy and support of scientific research. In the Joseon Dynasty, the name Gasam (cultivated ginseng) had been created as ginseng was cultivated on farmland after the stage of SanYang (wild cultivated ginseng), the purpose of the new name Gasam is to differentiate from natural ginseng, and natural ginseng lost its firm position as the genuine ginseng as the Gasam replaced the genuine ginseng, and the natural ginseng got a new name of SanSam (wild ginseng). Because the real ginseng substance concept dissipated, and as Gasam is being called ginseng, the name Gasam was also disappeared. As a result, it was possible to grow large quantities according to the arrival of the Gasam era, and it was possible to supply the demand for ginseng, and it could become one agricultural industry. In this ginseng cultivation, in Japan where ginseng did not grow naturally, it was difficult to obtain ginseng from Joseon and faced with a shortage of ginseng at all times. Therefore, the shogun cultivated the Gasam systematically at the national level by the inside of the shogunate. However, since the natural ginseng is native to China and Korea, there is a concern about the deterioration of the quality of natural ginseng due to the incorporation of cultivated ginseng (Gasam). To protect the interests, the cultivation of ginseng was subject to control. For this reason, the lack of historical information on Gasam cultivation, which had to be started secretly, would be a natural result. In this paper, althouh not sufficient enough, the historical informations were used to summarize the history of ginseng cultivation in China, Japan and Korea.

Purpose: Platycodon grandiflorum (PG) is known to have effective antimicrobial and anticancer activity. The main bioactive components of PG are saponins, and these could contribute to anti-inflammatory activity. However, little is known about the anti-inflammatory effect of PG. In this study, we aim to assess the anti-inflammatory response to Red PG Extract (RPGE) in splenocytes under ex vivo conditions. Methods: The cell viability of isolated splenocytes taken from mice was analyzed by performing a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. The productions of nitric oxide (NO) and cytokines (specifically interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10)) were measured utilizing Griess reagent and ELISA, respectively. Results: We found that co-treatment with RPGE and Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) decreased isolated splenocyte proliferation as compared with that of the LPS-stimulated control. We also observed that RPGE markedly suppressed NO synthesis and IL-6 production that was induced by LPS. There were no significant differences of IL-10 production between co-treatment with RPGE plus LPS and treatment with LPS alone. Conclusion: When taken together, our data has shown that RPGE mitigates LPS-induced inflammation in splenocytes isolated from mice. Further research is surely needed to confirm the anti-inflammation effects of RPGE in an in vivo model.
