  • Senior business has been paid attention due to rapid global aging and baby boomers turning 60. However, senior business is not successful as expected because of a lack of understanding of consumers and small size of Korean domestic market. Understanding of senior consumers and overseas markets and providing attractive product and service contents needs to overcome the current challenges. Therefore, this study explores and compares consumers of different generation and different countries. We employ consumption value theory and analyze which consumption values are perceived strongly by each four group(Korean consumers in their 20s, Korean their consumers in 50s, Chinese consumers in their 20s, and Chinese consumers in their 50s). We conducted online survey to compare consumption values among samples of consumers in two countries: Korea and China. There are forty survey instruments in twelve consumption values. The results can be used to develop a strategy for planning, developing, distributing, and promoting product and service contents which consumers, in particular baby boomers, have a strong intention to purchase it.

  • Designing environments for the elderly includes studying changes in the elderly themselves, changes in their environment, and changes in the intercommunication between the elderly and their environment. The purpose of this study is to provide guidelines for a ubiquitous environment in which seniors can "age in place," using an environment-behavioral approach. 305 subjects aged 45 to 78 take part in the survey research. Temporal sequence (age groups) and behavior (daily activities) are considered as the significant variables to design digital services for the elderly in the perspective of an environment-behavioral approach. Several conclusions can be made. (1) The characteristics of subjects in the over-65 age group shows that they manage an independent lifestyle even if they realize some body functions deteriorate as they age. (2) Over-65 age group is more engaged in healthcare and pastime activities. The male subjects of it are most inactive. (3) The IDA (importance of daily activities) and FDA (frequency of daily activities) are classified by five to six factors in each group. The IDA and FDA of the group aged over 65 differ from other age groups. (4) Five affordance dimensions of digital services for the elderly are proposed: Healthcare, Domesticity, Mobility & Security, Network, and Recreation & Pastime. These affordance dimensions will help research groups or companies design ubiquitous environments to enhance the quality of life of seniors.

The most desirable services were healthcare services including emergency care and nursing care and cleaning and laundry services. Regarding the educational and recreational programs, future residents chose physical exercises such as swimming and tennis and music activities such as playing instruments and singing as the most interesting programs they want to experience in UBRC. Most of the respondents were interested in mentoring college students or international students who come to the university for their degrees. The findings from the study should provide a guideline when offering services, programs, and activities in the future UBRC in Korea.
