  • Pt is still considered as one of the most active electrocatalysts for ORR in alkaline fuel cells. However, the high cost and scarcity of Pt hamper the widespread commercialization of fuel cells. As a strong candidate for the replacement of Pt catalyst, silver (Ag) has been extensively studied due to its high activity, abundance, and low cost. Ag is more stable than Pt in the pH range of 8~14 as the equilibrium potential of Ag/Ag+ being ${\approx}200mV$ higher than that of Pt/PtO. However, Ag is the overall catalytic activity of Ag for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) is still not comparable to Pt catalyst since the surface Ag atoms are approximately 10 times less active than Pt atoms. Therefore, further enhancement in the ORR activity of Ag catalysts is necessary to be competitive with current cutting-edge Pt-based catalysts. We demonstrate the architectural design of Ag catalysts, synthesized using plasma discharge in liquid phase, for enhanced ORR kinetics in alkaline media. An attractive feature of this work is that the plasma status controlled via electric-field could form the Ag nanowires or dendrites without any chemical agents. The plasma reactor was made of a Teflon vessel with an inner diameter of 80 mm and a height of 80 mm, where a pair of tungsten(W) electrodes with a diameter of 2 mm was placed horizontally. The stock solutions were made by dissolving the 5-mM AgNO3 in DI water. For the synthesis of Agnanowires, the electricfield of 3.6kVcm-1 in a 200-ml AgNO3 aqueous solution was applied across the electrodes using a bipolar pulsed power supply(Kurita, Seisakusyo Co. Ltd). The repetition rate and pulse width were fixed at 30kHz and 2.0 us, respectively. The plasma discharge was carried out for a fixed reaction time of 60 min. In case of Ag nanodendrites, the electric field of 32kVcm-1 in a 200-ml AgNO3 aqueous solution was applied and other conditions were identical to the plasma discharge in water in terms of electrode configuration, repetition rate and discharge time. Using SEM and STEM, morphology of Ag nanowires and dendrites were investigated. With 3.6 kV/cm, Ag nanowire was obtained, while Ag dendrite was constructed with 32 kV/cm. The average diameter and legth of Ag nanowireses were 50 nm and 3.5 um, and thoes values of Ag dendrites were 40 nm and 3.0 um. As a results of XPS analysis, the surface defects in the Ag nanowires facilitated O2 incorporation into the surface region via the interaction between the oxygen and the electron cloud of the adjacent Ag atoms. The catalytic activity of Ag for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) showed that the catalytic ORR activity of Ag nanowires are much better than Ag nanodendrites, and electron transfer number of Ag nanowires is similar to that of Pt (${\approx}4$).

  • Pure ZnO, ZnO nanowires doped with 3 wt.% Ga (3GZO) and doped with 3 wt.% Ag (3SZO) were grown by a hot-walled pulse laser deposition (HW-PLD) technique. The optical and chemical properties of Ga and Ag doped nanowires was analyzed. Nanowires were determined to be under 200 nm in diameter and several μm in length. Change of significant resistance was observed and the gas detection sensitivities of ZnO, 3GZO and 3SZO nanawires were compared. The sensitivities of ZnO, 3GZO, and 3SZO nanowire sensors were measured at 300℃ for 1 ppm of ethanol gas at 97%, 48%, and 203%, respectively.

  • As displays become larger and solar cells become cheaper, there is an increasing need for low-cost transparent electrodes. Intensive effort has been made to replace ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) based transparent electrode with cheap and flexible ones. Among those, silver nanowires have got limelight because of its great conductivity and flexibility. Even though the electric property of the Ag nanowire based transparent electrode surpassed ITO, the optical property needs to be improved (lower transmittance, higher haze). Here, we reported transparent electrode based on Ag nanowires and conducting polymer to improve optical properties. The Ag nanowires are coated onto PET films and the resulting transparent electrode film shows $200ohm/{\Box}$ resistance and > 90% optical transmittance.

  • This paper describes a selective synthetic method of fabricating Ag nanowires by using a modified polyol process. To synthesize the Ag nanowire, an ethylene glycolic solution of silver nitrate and an ethylene glycolic solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone solution containing a small amount of organic oxidant, 1,4-benzoquinone, were slowly added to a hot ethylene glycol medium at $160^{\circ}C$ for 8 min using a syringe pump. The reaction mixtures were heated for an additional 45 min and cooled to room temperature. Finally, the silver nanomaterials were isolated from the mixture by centrifugation. The crystal structure of the nanomaterials was investigated by powder X-ray diffraction analyses, and their morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. A small amount of organic oxidant, 1,4-benzoquinone, played a significant role in controlling the morphology during crystal growth. Consequently, Ag nanowires rather than Ag nanoparticles were selectively obtained.

  • Ag- and Pd-loaded $SnO_2$ nanowire network sensors were prepared by the growth of $SnO_2$ nanowires via thermal evaporation, the coating of slurry containing $SnO_2$ nanowires, and dropping of a droplet containing Ag or Pd nanoparticles, and subsequent heat treatment. All the pristine, Pd-loaded and Ag-loaded $SnO_2$ nanowire networks showed the selective detection of $C_2H_5OH$ with low cross-responses to CO, $H_2$, $C_3H_8$, and $NH_3$. However, the relative gas responses and gas selectivity depended closely on the catalyst loading. The loading of Pd enhanced the responses($R_a/R_g$: $R_a$: resistance in air, $R_g$: resistance in gas) to CO and $H_2$ significantly, while it slightly deteriorated the response to $C_2H_5OH$. In contrast, a 3.1-fold enhancement was observed in the response to 100 ppm $C_2H_5OH$ by loading of Ag onto $SnO_2$ nanowire networks. The role of Ag catalysts in the highly sensitive and selective detection of $C_2H_5OH$ is discussed.

  • The printing of nanomaterials onto certain substrates is one of the key technologies behind high-speed interconnection and high-performance electronic devices. For the printing of next-generation electronic devices, a printing process which can be applied to a flexible substrate is needed. A printing process on a flexible substrate requires a lowtemperature, non-vacuum process due to the physical properties of the substrate. In this study, we obtained well-ordered Ag nanowires using modified gravure printing techniques. Ag nanowires are synthesized by a silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) reduction process in an ethylene glycol solution. Ag nanowires were well aligned by hydrodynamic force on a micro-engraved Si substrate. With the three-dimensional structure of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which has an inverse morphology relative to the micro-engraved Si substrate, the sub-micron alignment of Ag nanowires is possible. This technique can solve the performance problems associated with conventional organic materials. Also, given that this technique enables large-area printing, it has great applicability not only as a next-generation printing technology but also in a range of other fields.

  • Recently, advances in nano-material researches have opened the door for various transparent conductive materials, which include carbon nanotube, graphene, Ag and Cu nanowire, and printable metal grids. Among them, Ag nanowires are particularly interesting to synthesize because bulk Ag exhibits the highest electrical conductivity among all metals. Here we reviewed recently-published research works introducing various devices from organic light emitting diode to tactile sensing devices, all of which are employing AgNW for a conducting material. They proposed methods to enhance the stretchability and reversibility of the transparent electrodes, and apply them to make various flexible and stretchable electronics. It is expected that Ag nanowires are applicable to a wide range of high-performance, low-cost, stretchable electronic devices.

  • Traditional screen printing is still a dominant method to print electrodes on c-Si solar cells. In order to achieve higher efficiency for c-Si solar cells, improvement of the electrode material is one of the key approaches. Shadowing loss can be reduced by using high aspect ratio finger electrode with width of finger electrode less than 80um. The rheological properties of Ag paste for applying c-Si solar cells are improved by using Ag nanowires. The printing properties including the aspect ratio of printed electrode can be improved with higher Thixotropic index (T.I.) values.
