For the probiotic feed production from residual food waste, aerobic liquid fermentation was conducted by thermophilic bacteria. 11 Strains of bacteria were isolated from several soil sources and residual food waste. Screening was carried by shaking incubator for the separation of thermophilic strain at $55^{\circ}C$. The isolated strains were tested for enzyme activities such as ${\alpha}$-amylase and protease. 6 Bacterial strains were chosen and were adapted by repeated fermentation processes in food waste substrate. The viable cell count of them at final fermentation stages were shown as $3-7{\times}10^9/ml$ in 2L-jar fermenter. Among them B3, B6 showed higher enzyme activity. By the mixed fermentation of B3, B6 and Bacillus stearothermophilus, the highest viable cell count reached to $1.4{\times}10^{10}/ml$ in 8 hours.

For the probiotic feed production from residual food waste by using the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus, aerobic liquid fermentation was attempted at $35^{\circ}C$. After grinding finely, optimal fermentation conditions of the substrate was investigated in shaking incubator. By controlling water content yeast growth was studied at each different solid content of 5, 10 and 15% respectively. The most active growth of the yeast was shown at 10%. For the stimulation of the cell growth, mixed culture with Aspersillus oryzae was conducted in a 2 litre-jar fermenter. As the results, the yeast growth rate was increased, but the maximum viable cell count amounted was slightly higher as $3.5{\times}10^9/ml$ than single culture.

The influence of agitation speed on the yeast growth was investigated in the production of probiotic feed from pulverized liquified food wastes by aerobic fermentation. A yeast Kluyvermyces marxianus was selected through a preliminary screening. The yeast was cultured by 2liter jar fermenter. in 10% solid(w/v) substrate of liquified food waste at $35^{\circ}C$ with each different agitation speed of 500, 900 and 1200 rpm. For the acceleration of enzyme excretion mixed culture with Aspergillus oryzae was also attempted and the results were compared to those of single culture. As results the viable cell number was increased by increasing agitation speed. But it showed highest value in 900rpm and then decreased in 1200rpm. The mixed culture increased amylase activity and growth rate, but did not seem to enhance the highest viable cell count in the final fermentation stage.
A pilot scale SBR (effective volume, $20m^3$) for the treatment of piggery wastewater treatment was performed with three different kinds of wastewater; fermenter effluent, scraper type and slurry type. The react phase in SBR was performed by sub-cycle operation consisting of repeated short cycle of anoxic-aerobic step. The fermenter effluent was characterized by the rapid nitrification and $NO_X-N$ accumulation due to depletion of organic matter in wastewater. The scraper type wastewater showed appropriate nitrogen removal efficiency, however, a poor response capacity for high loading rate often resulted in increased nitrogen concentration in effluent. Moreover, severe P release was the most serious problem in scraper type wastewater. SBR treated slurry type wastewater with high nitrogen removal efficiency to satisfy effluent quality requirement. It was thought that high concentration of organic matter in slurry made it possible to uptake P during SBR operation, where P concentration of 140mgP/l was decreased to 8mgP/l. As results, SBR was suitable to treat slurry type wastewater which has been discharged to the ocean till now.

For the production of probiotic feed enriched with viable yeasts, aerobic liquid culture of Kluyveromyces marxianus was attempted in pulverized residual food wastes. After the preliminary shaking culture result, the liquid food wastes was added with urea($0.5g/{\ell}$), o-phosphate($0.4g/{\ell}$ ), molasses($4g/{\ell}$), and yeast extract($1g/{\ell}$), and the fermentation was carried out in 2-litre jar fermenter. In 12 hours of aerobic mixed culture with Aspersillus oryzae, viable cell count of the yeast reached to the number of $1.4{\times}10^{10}/{\ell}$ in the cultured medium.

After grinding finely, optimal fermentation conditions of the substrate was investigated by shaking culture. The most active growth of the yeast was shown at solid content of 10%. The proper addition of urea(0.5g/l), o-phosphate(0.4g/l), molasses(4g/l), and yeast extract (1g/1) increased cell growth rate and viable cell count. For optimizing, the nutrients were all added to substrate and fermentation was carried in 2 litre jar fermenter. For the stimulation of hydrolyzing enzyme excretion, mixed culture with Aspersillus oryzae was also conducted. In 12 hours of fermentation, viable cell count of the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus amounted to the number of 1.4 $\times$10$^{10}$ /1 in the culture medium.

In this study, a waste heat recovery system was devised and the performances of components incorporated to recover the heat generated during the processing of aerobic liquid-composting in a livestock manure treatment facility were analyzed. In addition, the availability of recovered heat was confirmed. The heat generated by liquid fermentation in the livestock manure treatment facility was also checked. Experimental temperatures were set at 35, 40, and 45 ℃ based on considerations of the uniformity of aerobic liquid-composting fermentation tank temperature and its operating range (34.5 ~ 43.9 ℃). Recovered heat energies from the combined heat exchanger, which consisted of PE and STS pipes, were 53.5, 65.6, 74.4 MJ/h, The heat pump of capacity 5 RT was heated at 95.6, 96.1, 98.9 MJ/h and the heating COPs of the pump were 4.53, 4.62, and 4.65, respectively. The maximum hot water production capacity of the heat exchanger assuming a fermentation tank temperature of 45 ℃ confirmed an energy supply of 56 360 kcal/day. The heating capacity of the FCU linked to the heat storage tank was 20.8 MJ/h, and the energy utilization efficiency was 96.1%. When livestock manure was dried using the FCU, it was confirmed that the initial function rate was reduced by 50.5 to 45.8 % after drying.

One of the most important volatile aroma compounds responsible for mushroom flavor is 1-octen-3-ol. To meet the demand for natural mushroom flavor, a study was needed for the production of natural chiral specific (-)-1-octen-3-ol that has higher flavor intensity than synthetic chiral mixtures of (+), and (-)-1-octen-3-ol. The biosynthesis of (-)-1-octen-3-ol was achieved by an aerobic oxidation using lipoxygenase (LOX) and hydroperoxide lyase (HPOL) isolated from commercially available mushrooms in Korean market. Safflower oil from Uiseong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, that contains $\geq75\%$ of linoleic acid, was hydrolyzed using lipase. The recovered linoleic acid was biotransformed to stereo-specific 10-hydroperoxy linoleic acid by LOX. 10- hydroperoxy linoleic acid was further cleaved to (-)-1-octen-3-ol by HPOL. A commercial bioprocess for the production of (-)-1-octen-3-ol was developed using a 5-liter jar fermenter with fruiting bodies of Agaricus bisporus harvested from Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do. The maximum production of (-)-1-octen-3-o1 was achieved at $4^{\circ}C$, pH 6.5 and 800 rpm yielding 748 mg/kg of mushroom.
To investigate the potential applications of bacterial heme, aminolevulinic acid synthase (HemA) was expressed in a Corynebacterium glutamicum HA strain that had been adaptively evolved against oxidative stress. The red pigment from the constructed strain was extracted and it exhibited the typical heme absorbance at 408 nm from the spectrum. To investigate the potential of this strain as an iron additive for swine, a prototype feed additive was manufactured in pilot scale by culturing the strain in a 5 ton fermenter followed by spray-drying the biomass with flour as an excipient (biomass: flour = 1:10 (w/w)). The 10% prototype additive along with regular feed was supplied to a pig, resulting in a 1.1 kg greater increase in weight gain with no diarrhea in 3 weeks as compared with that in a control pig that was fed an additive containing only flour. To verify if C. glutamicum-synthesized heme is a potential electron carrier, lactic acid bacteria were cultured under aerobic conditions with the extracted heme. The biomasses of the aerobically grown Lactococcus lactis, Lactobacillus rhamosus, and Lactobacillus casei were 97%, 15%, and 4% greater, respectively, than those under fermentative growth conditions. As a potential preservative, cultures of the four strains of lactic acid bacteria were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ with the extracted heme and living lactic acid bacterial cells were counted. There were more L. lactis and L. plantarum live cells when stored with heme, whereas L. rhamosus and L. casei showed no significant differences in live-cell numbers. The potential uses of the heme from C. glutamicum are further discussed.
Azotobacter vinelandii, a strict aerobic nitrogen-fixing bacterium, has been extensively studied with regard to the ability of $N_2$-fixation due to its high expression of nitrogenase and fast growth. Because nitrogenase can also reduce cyanide to ammonia and methane, cyanide degradation by A. vinelandii has been studied for the application in the bioremediation of cyanide-contaminated wastewater. Cyanide degradation by A. vinelandii in NFS (nitrogen-free sucrose) medium was examined in terms of cell growth and cyanide reduction, and the results were applied for cyanide-contaminated cassava mill wastewater. From the NFS medium study in the 300 ml flask, it was found that A. vinelandii in the early stationary growth phase could reduce cyanide more rapidly than the cells in the exponential growth phase, and 84.4% of cyanide was degraded in 66 h incubation upon addition of 3.0 mM of NaCN. The resting cells of A. vinelandii could also reduce cyanide concentration by 90.4% with 3.0 mM of NaCN in the large-scale (3 L) fermentation with the same incubation time. Finally, the optimized conditions were applied to the cassava mill wastewater bioremediation, and A. vinelandii was able to reduce the cyanide concentration by 69.7% after 66 h in the cassava mill wastewater containing 4.0 mM of NaCN in the 3 L fermenter. Related to cyanide degradation in the cassava mill wastewater, nitrogenase was the responsible enzyme, which was confirmed by methane production. These findings would be helpful to design a practical bioremediation system for the treatment of cyanide-contaminated wastewater.
