  • To analyze tendency of temporal and spatial change of shorelines and to estimate rate of shoreline changes using long-term shoreline change data is very important for the coastal environmental management. In this study, investigation was conducted to estimate the rate of shoreline changes using long-term shoreline change data from the year 1985 to 2009 aerial photographs. In this process aerial triangulation, GPS surveying and digital mapping was done for the estimation of changes. As the results, shorelines of Bangpo and Kkotji Beach retreated at a maximum rate of 0.2 m/yr and 0.8 m/yr, respectively. The shoreline could be changed by various factors. However, it was presumed that coastal erosion has been mainly affected by retaining wall constructed in the late 1990s.

  • Many internet portals provide maps with spatial information services. Recently, various images including aerial, satellite, street view, and photo-realistic 3D city models are provided as well as maps. This study suggested a method for geometric correction of the panoramic aerial images in the internet portal and 3D building modeling using information which is available in the internet. The key of this study is to obtain all necessary data easily from internet without restrictions. Practically, the ground control coordinates could be available from geo-referenced internet maps, and stereo pairs of the aerial images and close-range photographs for photo-realistic object modeling are provided by the internet service. However, the ground control points are not suitable for accurate mapping. RMSE of the plotting was about 9 meters and reduced upto 4 meters after coordinate transformation. The proposed methods would be applicable to various applications of photo-realistic object modeling which do not require high accuracy.

  • It is desirable to use a photogrammetric scanner to minimize the errors from the scanning procedure in case of building aerial photo image DB. The photogrammetric scanner, however, is highly expensive to have only limited number of scanners available, therefore the general-purpose scanners have been considered as an alternative. This study has mainly been focused to see the possibility of the general-purpose scanner to be used for scanning aerial photographs. For that, the analysis of the image coordinates were made as well as the accuracy evaluation of each phase. In addition to that, as the application of the orthophoto images has been increased, the magnitudes of the errors from the DEM generation and orthophoto projection were analyzed. Also, the calibration program was developed to verify the geometric distortion of the automatic scanner to contribute to enhance the quality of the aerial photo image DB.

  • The analysis of foreign aircraft appearing suddenly in air defense identification zones requires a lot of cost and time. This study aims to develop a pre-trained model that can identify neighboring military aircraft based on aircraft photographs available on the web and present a model that can determine which aircraft corresponds to based on aerial photographs taken by allies. The advantages of this model are to reduce the cost and time required for model classification by proposing a pre-trained model and to improve the performance of the classifier by data augmentation of edge-detected images, cropping, flipping and so on.

  • From 12 to 16 July 2006, 4 days' torrential rainfall in Deoksan-ri, Inje-up, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do caused massive landslide and debris flow. Huge losses of both life and property, including two people buried to death in submerged houses, resulted from this disaster. As the affected region is mostly mountainous, it was difficult to approach the region and to estimate the exact extent of damage. But using aerial photographs, we can define the region and assess the damage quickly and accurately. In this study the debris flow region in inje, Gangwon-do was analyzed using aerial photographs. This region was divided into three sections - beginning section, flow section and sedimentation section. Informations for each section were extracted by digitizing the shot images with visual reading. Topographic, forest physiognomic and soil characteristics and debris flow occurrences of this region were analyzed by overlaying topographic map, forest type map and soil map using GIS. Comprehensive analysis shows that landslide begins at slope of about $36^{\circ}$, flows down at $26^{\circ}$ slope, and at $21^{\circ}$ slope it stops flowing and deposits. Among forest physiognomic factors, species of trees showd significant relationship with debris flow. And among soil factors, effective soil depth, soil erosion class, and parent materials showed meaningful relationship with debris flow.

  • This study presents long-term shoreline changes of barrier islands in Nakdong Estuary using aerial photographs. Digital photogrammetry is used for constructing mosaic aerial photographs, which yield six sets of shoreline data ranging from 1975 to 2001. Three kinds of rate of shoreline changes such as EPR (End Point Rate), JKR(Jackknife Rate) and LRR (Linear Regression Rate) are computed by a GIS-based Digital Shoreline Analysis Systems. There have been remarkable changes both in Sinja Island and Doyodeung. Western part of Sinja Island advanced seaward, whereas eastern part retreated landward, giving appearance that the island rotated counterclockwise. Rate of shoreline changes at both ends reach 20 m/yr. Doyodeung occurred newly in front of Baekhapdeung in 1993, resulting in shoreline advance in a rate of 40 m/yr. Rate of shoreline changes differ both within and between barrier islands and have a tendency to increase eastward. To understand this spatial variability of rate of shoreline changes, it is suggested to make a detailed investigation into the impact of coastal development on hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes.

  • In this study, the volume of shoreline retreat at sea-cliffs in the Taean peninsula(West Coast of Korea) was estimated and their erosion and seasonal landforms characteristics changes were investigated through multi-temporal aerial photographs and field survey. Based on the analysis of aerial photographs through ortho-correction, the results show that the length of shoreline and erosion area increase as erosion at sea-cliffs occurs in Pado-li and Dundu-li. To obtain the seasonal quantitative landforms changes and retreat of sea-cliffs, we marked top, middle, and bottom datum-points, from which the distance to the nearest bedrock was repeatedly measured. In these regions, the retreat of sea-cliffs gradually increases in spring to summer, but gradually decreases in autumn. In particular, the typhoon that has a great influence on the Korean peninsula in July to September in summer would drastically increase the retreat of sea-cliffs in comparison with other seasons. As the outcrop of sea-cliffs repeats freezing and thawing in winter, the retreat of sea-cliffs increases a little due to active mechanical weathering. To know the erosion and seasonal landforms changes of sea-cliffs, we took pictures of them in every month and then analyze their condition. The retreat of sea-cliffs was repeatedly occurred by the circulation of the erosion of sea-cliff base, landslides, the formation of slope sediment debris and their erosion, in that order.

  • Geographic Information System (GIS) is a method of expressing objects in a space. Currently, many research and developments are being conducted to implement 3D GIS. In previous studies, 3D GIS applications have been developed using Unity 3D, which is a 3D engine with good development accessibility. However, it requires manual work to enter various formats of GIS data, making it difficult to immediately reflect GIS data that change frequently. To improve this problem, this study developed a method for automatically reading and outputting various GIS data from the existing Unity 3D application. The improved application could read Satellite Images, Aerial Photographs, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and Shapefiles with no transformation through other commercial programs, and they could be implemented as 3D objects. This study automated the GIS data conversion which had been manually performed and as a result, the manpower, time, and resources required for 3D GIS implementation can be saved.

  • Trying to estimate variations of the riverbed is basic and important for river management. When new dam constructed in upstream and a structure were planned, impact of the riverbed changes in downstream should be considered for stably maintained and sustained rivers in the future. In this study, long-term riverbed changes analyzed using aerial photographs in Naeseongcheon. Also applying one-dimensional numerical model, GSTARS analyzed the effects of bed deformation in critical points. Based on Changing Patterns of long-term riverbed, it is possible that after the dam was built, to explore how to manage Naeseongcheon.
