The characterization of pore properties (mean pore size and pore size distribution) of the active layer in a UF membrane is important not only in order to obtain information about the factors affecting pore formation during membrane manufacturing but also to understand deeply the mechanism of solute and solvent transport through pores. Many methods of characterizing quantitatively the pore properties of UF membranes have been suggested in the literature: solvent and gas flow measurement, bubble point determination, electron microscopy, gas adsorption/desorption measurement, rejection measurement etc. But most of these methods involve time-consuming procedures and involve some wellknown problems and uncertainties.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been of particular concern since they are present both in the vapor and particulate phases in ambient air. In this study, a simple method was applied to determine the vapor phase PAHs, and the performance of the new method was evaluated with a conventional method. The simple method was based on adsorption sampling and thermal desorption with GC/MS analysis, which is generally applied to the determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air. A combination of Carbotrap (300 mg) and Carbotrap-C (100 mg) sorbents was used as the adsorbent. Target compounds included two rings PAHs such as naphthalene, acenaphthylene, and acenaphthene. Among them, naphthalene was listed as one of the main HAPs together with a number of VOCs in petroleum refining industries in the USA. For comparison purposes, a method based on adsorption sampling and solvent extraction with GC/MS analysis was adopted, which is in principle same as the NIOSH 5515 method. The performance of the adsorption sampling and thermal desorption method was evaluated with respect to repeatabilities, detection limits, linearities, and storage stabilities for target compounds. The analytical repeatabilities of standard samples are all within 20%. Lower detection limits was estimated to be less than 0.1 ppbv. In the results from comparison studies between two methods for real air samples. Although the correlation coefficients were more than 0.9, a systematic difference between the two groups was revealed by the paired t-test (${\alpha}$=0.05). Concentrations of two-rings PAHs determined by adsorption and thermal desorption method consistently higher than those by solvent extraction method. The difference was caused by not only the poor sampling efficiencies of XAD-2 for target PAHs and but also sample losses during the solvent extraction and concentration procedure. This implies that the levels of lower molecular PAHs tend to be underestimated when determined by a conventional PAH method utilizing XAD-2 (and/or PUF) sampling and solvent extraction method. The adsorption sampling and thermal desorption with GC analysis is very simple, rapid, and reliable for lower-molecular weight PAHs. In addition, the method can be used for the measurement of VOCs in the air simultaneously. Therefore, we recommend that the determination of naphthalene, the most volatile PAH, will be better when it is measured by a VOC method instead of a conventional PAH method from a viewpoint of accuracy.
A water soluble polymer, polycondensate of 1-butylamine and epichlorohydrin (PBE), was synthesized by condensation of 1-butylamine and epichlorohydrin. The characteristics of PBE were determined by IR spectroscopy, low angle light scattering measurement, and $\zeta$ potential measurement. Its interactions with colloidal bentonite particles in aqueous medium were also studied. The results of the studies are as follows : PBE is a cationic polyelectrolyte carrying tertiary ammonium ions on its backbone. The average molecular weight of PBE is found to be about 1,600. The adsorption of PBE on the colloidal bentonite particles are well described with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. As the amounts of PBE adsorbed on the bentonite particles increase, the $\zeta$ potential of the particles changes its sign from negative to positive. This inversion of charge confirms that PBE is cationic in nature. The adsorption of PBE onto the bentonite particles was found to occur through cation exchange reaction. It has been shown that PBE has flocculation effects on the colloidal suspension of bentonite. It has also enhanced effects of filtrability on the digested sludge.
Carbon nanotubes, nanofibers and powders were used for acetylene adsorption experiments. A total of 15 different experiments were designed by 3-level of Box-Behnken Design (BBD) with 3 factors including the Pd concentration of 0 to 5%, adsorption temperature of 30 to $80^{\circ}C$ and $C_2H_2/CO_2$ of 3 to 10. Based on those data, a second order polynomial regression analysis was used to derive the adsorption amount prediction equation according to operating conditions. The adsorption temperature showed the greatest influence index while the $C_2H_2/CO_2$ ratio showed the smallest according to the F-value measurement of the ANOVA analysis. However, there was little interaction between major factors. In the adsorption optimization analysis, a 22.0 mmol/g was adsorbed under the conditions of Pd concentration of 3.0%, adsorption temperature of $47^{\circ}C$ and $C_2H_2/CO_2$ of 10 with 95.9% accuracy.

The effects of adsorption and desorption of alkali-metals on Si(111) surface were investigated by using AES and RHEED-system. The adsorption system is a fundamental interest because of its unique electronic properties such as measurement of work function change, adatom-core level shift. It was found that the growth node of K on Si(111) surface was layer by layer growth and the saturation coverage was 2.0ML at room temperature. Superstructure changes on Si(111) surface according to the alkali-metal thickness and substrate temperatures were accurately defined. By applying the isothermal desorption method, the desorption energies of Li/Si(111) and K/Si(111) surfaces was measured. On Li/Si(111) and K/Si(111) surfaces, the desorption energies were 3.07 eV, 2.19 eV respectively.

Two compact sized globular proteins, β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin were kinetically characterized at the aqueous solution surface with the measurement of surface pressure (π) and surface concentration (Γ) via a radiotracer method. The adsorption kinetics was of diffusion control at early times, the rates of increase of πand Γ being lower at longer times due to growing energy barrier. At low concentrations, an apparent time lag was observed in the evolution of π for β-lactoglobulin but not for α-lactalbumin which was shown to be due to the non-linear nature of the p- G relationship for the former. The area per molecule of an adsorbed β-lactoglobulin during adsorption was smaller than that for spread monolayer since β-lactoglobulin was not fully unfolded during the adsorption. For α-lactalbumin, however, no such difference in the molecular areas for adsorbed and spread monolayer was observed indicating thereby that α-lactalbumin unfolded much more rapidly (has looser tertiary structure) than β-lactoglobulin. Surface excess concentrations of α-lactalbumin was found to evolve in two steps possibly due to the change in the orientation of the adsorbed protein from a side-on to an end-on orientation.

Concrete has a lower thermal conductivity or thermal diffusion coefficient compared to other building materials, so it is widely used as fireproof compartment material or refractory material for structures. However, in the event of thermal damage such as fire, cement curing agents and aggregates act differently, resulting in heat generation or deterioration of tissue due to dehydration, resulting in deterioration of physical properties and fire resistance. Therefore, in this study, the processing structure of cement paste is measured through nitrogen absorption method. The test specimen is a cement paste of 40% W/C and is set at 1000 ℃ under heating temperature conditions. As the temperature rose, the micro-pore mass below was reduced based on about 0.01 감소m, but the air gap above that was increased. Thus, in the range of pores measured in nitrogen adsorption, the air mass tended to decrease under high temperature conditions.
The purposes of this paper were to monitor the temperature rising courses and spark discharge of the modified granular activated carbon (GAC) by microwave (MW) irradiation and to evaluate absorption of benzene. The GAC coated on $SiO_2$, boron, talc, ferrite was named as the modified GAC. Thermal and spark discharge measurement of virgin GAC and modifed GAC has been carried out using a MW device operating at 2450 MHz under various energy conditions. The results of this paper as follows. First, the modified GAC is more efficient than the virgin GAC in temperature control. Temperature gradient of the modified GAC is more lower than that of virgin GAC. The temperature gradient of GAC was observed in the following order : virgin GAC, Mn-Zn ferrite/GAC, Ni-Zn ferrite,/GAC, $SiO_2/GAC$, Boron/GAC, Talc/GAC. Second, the spark discharge of the modified GAC was diminished, compared with that of virgin GAC. Because of its excellent electrical insulating properties, the coating material prevents the spark discharge. Finally, the benzene adsorption capacity of the modified GAC decreased due to diminishing of adsorption site by the coating material. Considering the temperature gradient and spark discharge of GAC, the GAC coated $SiO_2$ would be appropriate absorbent under irradiation of MW.

This paper describes a technique combining chemometrics with UV spectroscopy for the determination of the concentra tions of two tissue additives (i.e., wet strength and softening agents) in a cellulose fiber containing solution. In single as ent solutions, the concentration of the additive can be measured by UV spectroscopy at the wavelength where the species having absorption. For a binary (i.e., containing two additives) solution system, the spectral characterization is very complicated. However, if aided by a chemometrical calibration technique, each additive in the binary solution can be quantified simultaneously. The present method is very rapid and simple, it can easily perform a continuous measurement in the changes in the additives' concentration after fiber addition, and therefore this becomes a valuable tool for the adsorption kinetics study of chemical additives onto the cellulose fibers. The time-dependent adsorption behaviors of the wet-strength, softening agent, and their both on fiber were also presented.
