A Study of Pain, Depression, and Adjustment to Military Life of Soldiers with Low Back Pain (요통이 있는 병사의 통증, 우울, 군생활 적응에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine levels of pain, depression, and adjustment to military life in soldier who experienced low back pain, in order to produce fundamental data for the development of health improvement programs to prevent and manage low back pain in soldiers with low back pain. Methods: Subjects of this study consisted of 317 soldiers who had low back pain. Study instruments were Visual analog scale (VAS), the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D), and adjustment to military life scale. Collected data were analyzed by the SPSS Win 14.0 program. Results: Mean score of pain was 4.16 points, depression was 8.58 points, and adjustment to military life was 69.15 points. The level of pain was negatively related to adjustment to military life (r=-.241, p<.001) and positively related to depression (r=.262, p<.001). There was a negative relationship between depression and adjustment to military life (r=-.442, p<.001). Conclusion: Soldiers who had low back pain experienced higher levels of pain and depression and lower level of adjustment to military life. Therefore, further study is needed to develop and examine a nursing intervention to manage low back pain for them.

Effects of the Program Improving Adjustment to Military Life, on Stress, Depression, Idea of Suicide, Self-esteem, and Adjustment to Military Living in Auxiliary Police (군생활 적응 향상 프로그램이 전.의경의 스트레스, 우울, 자살생각, 자아존중감, 군생활 적응에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify whether the program, improving adjustment to military life would have an effect on stress, depression, idea of suicide, adjustment to military living, and self-esteem in auxiliary police. Method: This quazi experimental study using a non-equivalent control group pretest and posttest design was conducted from February 1 to May 30, 2007. Using convenience sampling, the researcher recruited 120 auxiliary police and randomly assigned each to either the experimental and the control group. The experimental group received an 8-week program to improve adjustment to military life. Results: Anxiety, stress, depression, idea of suicide, self-esteem, and adjustment to military living were significantly different between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that programs to improve adjustment to military life would improve psychological health and adaptation of military living in auxiliary police. Replication studies are needed to confirm the effects of this program and to identify the long-term maintenance effects of the program.

Effect on the Soldier's Resiliency on the Their Adjustment in Military (병사들의 레질리언스가 군 생활 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the soldier's resiliency on the their adjustment in military. For the research, resiliency was consisted of interpersonal relation, vitality, emotion control, curiosity and optimistic. This study analyzed 150 military soldiers by survey. The results of this study are summarized as follows: soldier's resiliency and adjustment in military was showed high level. Soldier who had high resiliency adapted to the military life better than who had low resiliency. Interpersonal relation, curiosity and optimistic among resiliency showed positive influence on soldier's adjustment in military. This study finally discussed theoretical implications for future study and practical implications on the results.

  • The purpose of this study is to review whether the self-esteem of Republic of Korea army officers and noncommissioned officers affect cultural acceptability and at the same time to determine whether these relationships are mediated by adjustment to military life and job satisfaction. For this purpose, we conducted a survey by random sampling of 580 officers and noncommissioned officers serving in the army units located in Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province. The collected data was analyzed by a structural equation model, including statistical and correlation analysis. As a result of analysis, self-esteem of the military officers and noncommissioned officers appeared to be mediated only by military life adjustment, or to affect the cultural acceptability mediated by the military life and job satisfaction in turn. Therefore, in order to increase the cultural acceptability of military officers and noncommissioned officers, ROK Army should enhance the self-esteem, job satisfaction and adaptability of them.

Moderating Effects of Ego-resilience on the Relationship between Military Life Stress and Military Adjustment of Soldiers (군 생활스트레스가 병사의 군 적응에 미치는 영향 : 자아탄력성의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • This study attempted to find out the moderating effects of ego-resilience in the relationship between soldier's military stress and military adjustment. The datas were collected from 321 soldier of military from questionaries in October, 2013. The results were as follows. The soldier level and academic career had no impact on the military adjustment. Military stresses of soldier had greater impact on the military adjustment than other factors. Ego-resilience also had positive impact on the military adjustment. This study demonstrated that ego-resilience of soldier had moderating effect in the relationship between military stress and military adjustment. This study verified that to improve the capability of military adjustment of soldier it is as important to attention soldier's inside thing, ego-resilience as environment things. Finally, the authors remarked the limits of this study and the suggestions for the further research directions.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the moderating effect of interpersonal relationship skills in adapting military life and stress in the army. For this purpose, 453 soldiers in Chungnam and Daejeon were surveyed. First, the main result of this study is the difference in interpersonal skills and group life adjustment in accordance with the rank and class of the soldiers. Second, too much stress can cause difficulty to adapt military life and interpersonal skills. Also high interpersonal skills can help to adjust well to military life. Third, according to the survey, it was confirmed that the openness in the sub-factors of military life and military life stress was effective. This study suggests that it is important to help control the stress of military life to improve the ability of the openness of interpersonal skills in order to increase the adaptability military life.

Family function mediates the relationship between internet addiction prior to entering the military and maladjustment in military life (입대 전 인터넷중독수준과 군 생활부적응 간의 관계에서 가족기능의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine internet addiction and maladaptation among soldiers and to ascertain how family function mediated among army soldiers. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 313 soldiers currently serving military service and was analysed using the structural equation model. The results were summarized as follows: Internet addiction had a direct effect on military adjustment and family function mediated military adjustment. Moreover, internet addiction had an indirect effect through family function, family function had a partial mediate effect on the relationship between internet addiction and military adjustment among army soldiers. Based on the findings, this study discussed the need to develop preventive and therapeutic programs to enhance army soldiers military adjustment.

Study on the Couple Relationships in Military : Relationship among Military life Stress, Couple Relationship Resilience and Military Adjustment (육군 병사들의 커플관계에 관한 연구 : 군 생활 스트레스, 커플관계 탄력성, 그리고 군 생활 적응의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relation among the CRR, MA, and MS of military solder's who have experienced couple relationship troubles. Data collected from 239 soldiers in front-line division and post line division was analyzed by correlation analysis, t-test and hierarchical analysis using SPSS 18.0. As the results, 1. CRR and MA showed a positive correlation and CRR and MS showed a negative corelation. 2. CRR showed a significant influence on the MA. 3. CRR had a mediating effects on the process where MS influenced MA. The results of this study are expected to be used as the primary data for raising the adaptability to the military especially on the subject of couple relationship, and as an educational guidance for helping soldiers to see the positive aspect of the adversity and stress of military life.

The Effect of Self-Efficacy and Ego-resilience on College Adaptation after Military Service (군복무 후 제대한 복학생의 진로결정자기효능감과 자아탄력성이 대학생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how career decision-making self-efficacy and ego-resilience of college students after military service influence college life adjustment. For this purpose, the questionnaire was administered to 234 male college students who returned to the four-year university in Jeonbuk area. The collected data were analyzed by correlation analysis and hierarchical regression using SPSS 18.0. As a result of examining the correlation between each variables, the subscale adaptation of college life adjustment and university environment adaptation showed a positive correlation with the goal selection of career decision self-efficacy and optimistic attitude of ego-resilience. Future plan of career decision-making self-efficacy, optimistic attitude of ego-resilience and personal-emotional adaptation of college life adaptation showed a positive correlation between self-evaluation of career decision self-efficacy and self-resilience confidence. As a result of hierarchical regression analysis, it was found that ego-resilience had more influence on college life adjustment than career decision self-efficacy. The limitations of this study were discussed along with the significance of this study, which was revealed through data collection only for students who came back after military service.

A Case of Psychogenic vomiting (七情吐) patient who showed loss of the weight due to Maladjustment in a Military life (군대생활 부적응으로 급격한 체중감소를 나타낸 칠정토(七情吐) 환자 치험 1례)

  • Psychogenic vomiting (七情吐) is the disease of vomiting due to seven emotions that joy, anger, melancholy, anxiety, grief, fear and terror being the response of the mind to the environmental stimuli. We experienced a 21year-old man who had a psychogenic vomiting due to maladjustment in a military life, and whose condition was improved through oriental medical treatment. We treated the patient with Herbal medications and Giungoroen (至言高論)-wise saying and lofty opinion). Giungoroen is psychological therapy that promotes patient's recognition of disease and will to cure it through conversation. After being treated, the patient showed that symptoms (vomiting, nausea, abdominal discomfort, insomnia, a depressed mood, a feeling of uneasiness) was improved considerably. Tills result suggests that oriental medical treatment bas good effect on psychogenic vomiting due to adjustment disorder.
