Advanced adhesive technologies and demanding applications of adhesive joints can no longer be developed successfully by the traditional "trial and error" approach. Appropriate technical solutions require reference to a reliable basis of well-established scientific knowledge about the elementary mechanisms of adhesion (i.e. the 'fundamental adhesion') as they are responsible for the capability of the compound w transmit mechanical force between the adhesive and the substrate surface (i.e. the 'practical adhesion'). Adhesion mechanisms also influence the formation of polymer structure in the adhesive and the resulting macromolecular dynamics in the interphase that is formed in the adhesive near to the substrate. These manifold molecular factors rule the macroscopic behaviour of an adhesive bond line in terms of mechanical and other physical properties as well as in terms of durability. This paper reviews the level of refinement that understanding of fundamental adhesion has achieved up to now.

Adherend samples were made from unsaturated polyester and woven and mat glass fibers by the hand layup and vacuum methods. The mechanical properties of the adhesive, composite adherends, and terminal-joint and secondary-joint specimens were determined experimentally. Combinations of the experiment results and the bonding theory were used in this study. The maximum and average shear stresses were calculated based on the maximum tensile force and geometry parameters of the joint specimens. The results of the maximum and average shear stresses were compared and evaluated for six joints. The results showed that the grinding and grind/acetone joint had the highest strength among three types of terminal-joints. Similarly, the mat-mat and mat-woven joints had the highest strength among three types of secondary-joints with the same value. Conversely, no treatment and woven-woven bonding had very low strength. In each case, failure occurred always at two ends and then moved toward the middle area of the overlap length.
When an adhesive joint is exposed to high environmental temperature, the tensile load capability of the adhesive joint decreases because the elastic modulus and failure strength of structural adhesive decrease. The thermo-mechanical properties of structural adhesive can be improved by addition of fillers to the adhesive. In this paper, the elastic modulus and failure strength of adhesives as well as the tensile load capability of tubular single lap adhesive joints were experimentally and theoretically investigated with respect to the volume fraction of filler (alumina) and the environmental temperature. Also the tensile modulus of the fille containing epoxy adhesive was predicted using a new equation which considers filler shape, filler content and environmental temperature. The tensile load capability of the adhesive joint was predicted by using the effective strain obtained from the finite element analysis and a new failure model, from which the relation between the bonding length and the crack length was developed with respect to the volume fraction of filler.
We synthesized polyurethane adhesive having thermal characteristic could be debonded by heat treatment and made a dismantlable polyurethane adhesive including thermally expansive bead. We used dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMA) to confirm thermal characteristic and investigated bond strength, dismantlement property of dismantlable polyurethane adhesive by content of thermally expansive bead, heating trigger and treatment conditions. The dismantlable polyurethane adhesive could be expanded by hot-air or microwave treatment and the dismantlement of the specimens became easier as the weight fraction of the thermally expansive bead increased. At the dismantlable polyurethane adhesive, the content of thermally expansive bead 40% was suitable for both bond strength and dismantlement, in case of using hot-air treatment as trigger for dismantlement, bonded joints were separated easily at $160^{\circ}C$ for 30 min and in case of using microwave as trigger, bonded joints were separated easily by irradiating microwave for 4 min.
Purpose: In this paper adhesive-bonded cylindrical lap joints are analyzed by assuming that the adherends are elastic and the adhesive is linearly viscoelastic. Method: The distribution of the stresses in the adhensive is evaluated using the Finite Element Method. Nuverical examples for identical and different adherends bonded through a four parameter viscoelastic solid adhesive are illustrated. Results: The stress distribution in the adhesive layer with respect to time is shown. The stress distribution in the adhesive layer with respect to time is shown. The results are also shown that adherend thickness and elastic modulus give effect on the normalized stress. Conclusion: In this study, the stress distribution of the adhesive layer of the wrapped cylindrical body considering the viscoelasticity of the adhesive layer was numerically analyzed by using a four - element elastomer model.
In this study, effects of surface roughness on adhesive strength of heat-resistant adhesive RTV88 were examined. Sandblast was used to generate rough surfaces on aluminum adherends, and then tensile-shear tests of Al/RTV88 single lap joints were performed. The shear strength was shown to be affected by the surface roughness. Effective area, peel failure area, and cohesive failure area were introduced to explain the effects of surface roughness on the adhesive strength. An empirical relation for the failure force was proposed based on these parameters and verified by the test results.

The objective of this study is to investigate the distribution of von Mises stress, peeling stress, and shear stress in the adhesive layer used to bond two composite panels, considering various parameters using a three-dimensional finite element method. The stiffness of the materials and the effect of the stacking order on the amount of load transferred to the adhesive layer were examined to determine which type of laminate generates less stress at the bond line. The study analyzed six different stacking sequences, all with a common first layer in contact with the adhesive and a 0° orientation. Additionally, the impact of using hybrid composites on reducing bond line stress was investigated.
In this paper, novel carbon nanotube (CNT)-filled Solderable electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) and joining process have been developed. To investigate the bonding characteristics of CNT-filled Solderable ECA, three types of Solderable ECAs with different CNT weight percent (0, 0.1, 1wt%) were formulated. For a joining process, the quad flat package (QFP) chip was used. The QFP chip had a size of $14{\times}14{\times}2.7$ mm and a 1 mm lead pitch. The test board had a Cu daisy-chained pattern with 18 ${\mu}m$ thick. After the bonding process, the bonding characteristics such as morphology of conduction path, electrical resistance and pull strength were measured for each formulated ECAs. As a result, the electrical and mechanical bonding characteristics for a QFP joints using CNT-filled ECA were improved about 10% compared to those of QFP joints using ECA without CNT.

One approach to testing the suitability of a adhesive joint for a particular application is to build and test to destruction of a representative sample of the joint. The nondestructive test will not measure strength directly but will measure a parameter which can be correlated to the strength. It is therefore, essential that a suitable nondestructive test is chosen and its results are correctly interpreted. In this paper, typical ultrasonic signal analysis in adhesive joints are evaluated together with interface stress from the result of finite element analysis.

The two-state or mutual M-integral which is derived from tile M-integral and is applicable for two elastic states, is applied for computing all intensity of a singular near-tip field around the vertex of a class of wedge, encountered in adhesive lap joints under mechanical loading. Numerically we verify that a simple auxiliary field associated with every eigenfunction for the composite wedge under consideration exists in the form of the conjugate solution in the sense of tile M-integral. The auxiliary field is then employed for superposition with the elastic field under consideration, and the associated two-state M-integral is computed via the domain integral technique. This enables us to extract the intensity for a singular field information for a singular elastic boundary layer is extracted form the domain integral representation without resort to singular finite element for the wedge vertex.
