This paper presents an effective single image haze removal using edge-preserving and adaptive transmission estimation to enhance the visibility of outdoor images vulnerable to weather and environmental conditions with computational complexity reduction. The conventional methods involve the time-consuming refinement process. The proposed transmission estimation however does not require the refinement, since it preserves the edges effectively, which selects one between the pixel-based dark channel and the patch-based dark channel in the vicinity of edges. Moreover, we propose an adaptive transmission estimation to improve the visual quality particularly in bright areas like sky. Experimental results with various hazy images represent that the proposed method is superior to the conventional methods in both subjective visual quality and computational complexity. The proposed method can be adopted to compose a haze removal module for realtime devices such as mobile devices, digital cameras, autonomous vehicles, and so on as well as PCs that have enough processing resources.

This paper proposes a regional feature preserving adaptive interpolation algorithm for natural images. The algorithm can be used in resolution enhancement, arbitrary rotation and other applications of still images. The basic idea is to first scan the sample image to initialize a 2D array which records the edge direction of all four-pixel squares, and then use the array to adapt the interpolation at a higher resolution based on the edge structures. A hybrid approach of switching between bilinear and triangulation-based interpolation is proposed to reduce the overall computational complexity. The experiments demonstrate our adaptive interpolation and show higher PSNR results of about max 2 dB than other traditional interpolation algorithms.

Definition-Enhancement of the digitalized image has been being made researches continuously due to application a camera to a mobile-apparatus and the advent of a digital camera. In particular, the inputted image from a sensor goes through the process of ISP(Image Signal Process) prior to output as a visual image. The high-frequency components are offset by LPF(Low Pass Filter) that eliminates the noise of high spatial-frequency at the moment. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that outputs more vivid image by using adaptive-HPF(High Pass Filter) that has apt coefficients for diverse conditions of an image edge, nevertheless we do not employ any Edge-Detection algorithm to enhance a blurred image.

A halftoning method is used to obtain a binary image visually similar to a continuous gray-level image through the image output devices employing the limited number of gray-levels. As a halftoning method, the error diffusion method is widely used in various applications because of its low computational complexity and good image quality. However, this method weakens the edge in the process of error diffusion to the neighboring pixels. In this case, degradation of the edge quality and damage of the vivid image is expected. To solve these problems, the proposed method determines the adaptive error filter considering the error information of the present pixel and edge distribution of the neighbor pixels. Compared with the conventional methods for enhancing edges, the proposed method involves relatively a few process resources because of its simple procedure, still considerably improving the edges in the halftone image. To evaluate the objective image quality, the performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the conventional method in terms of the edge correlation and the local average accordance.

The three-dimensional (3D) wavelet transform with motion compensation is suitable for very high quality video coding due to both spatial and temporal decorrelations. However, it still suffers from image degradation such as ringing artifact and afterimage because of the loss of high frequency components by quantization. This paper proposes an iterative regularized enhancement of the motion-compensated 3D wavelet coded video. We also propose the adaptive implementation of the constraints for the regularization. It selectively suppresses the high frequency component along only the corresponding edge direction.

In this paper, adaptive unsharp masking using bilateral filter, edge-preserving smoothing filter is proposed to reduce the overshoot and jagging artifact in sharpening images. Previous image enhancement methods including unsharp masking(UM) can emphasize high-frequency details strongly, but often cause several artifacts such as overshooting, noise, jagging and so on. Proposed image enhancement method preserves edges well because of using bilateral filter and sensitively controls a weight according to edge's directions. Therefore, it enhances sharpness and effectively reduces overshoot and jagging artifacts. Simulation results comparing output of previous AUM with proposed method show that proposed algorithm makes images properly enhanced, and we know that overshoot and jagging artifacts are many reduced.

Power allocation of soft frequency reuse(SFR) to increase cell edge user throughput by reducing inter-cell interference is proposed for coordinated cellular systems. SFR is the effective technique to increase cell edge user throughput, however, it costs the degradation of total system throughput. The cost increases when SFR operated in distributed resource controlled systems fails to be fast adaptive in the change of user distribution. The proposed scheme enables coordinated cells to control transmit power adaptively depending on user distribution so that it minimizes the loss of system throughput introduced from SFR while it guarantees enhancement of cell edge user throughput. Through system level simulation considering neighboring two cells, evaluation result for adaptive power allocation is shown compared with static power allocation.

This paper presents a content adaptive interpolation (CAI) for intra deinterlacing. The CAI consists of three steps: pre-processing, content classification, and adaptive interpolation. There are also three main interpolation methods in our proposed CAI, i.e. modified edge-based line averaging (M-ELA), gradient directed interpolation (GDI), and window matching method (WMM). Each proposed method shows different performances according to spatial local features. Therefore, we analyze the local region feature using the gradient detection and classify each missing pixel into four categories. And then, based on the classification result, a different do-interlacing algorithm is activated in order to obtain the best performance. Experimental results demonstrate that the CAI method performs better than previous techniques.
This paper proposes an adaptive regularized noise smoothing algorithm for range image using the area decreasing flow method, which can preserve meaningful edges during the smoothing process. Although the area decreasing flow method can easily smooth Gaussian noise, it has two problems; ⅰ) it is not easy to remove impulsive noise from observed range data, and ⅱ) it is also difficult to remove noise near edge when the adaptive regularization is used. In the paper, therefore, the second smoothness constraint is addtionally incorporated into the existing regularization algorithm, which minimizes the difference between the median filtered data and the estimated data. As a result, the Proposed algorithm can effectively remove the noise of dense range data with edge preserving.

The current display systems including TVs are going digital and large-sized, and high visual quality of those systems becomes a very important selling point in the current display system market. Thus, various researches have been carried out for enhancing the visual quality of digital display systems. One of the important digital image(or video) enhancement techniques is sharpness enhancement, and it is generally based on a transient improvement technique that reduces the edge transition time. However, this technique often generates overshoot and undershoot, which cause undesirable pixel-level changes around the transient improved edge. In this paper, we propose a new nonlinear filter-based adaptive shoot elimination method for effectively suppressing the overshoot and undershoot that occur in the transient improvement, so that we can obtain visually sharper and clearer digital images(or videos). The proposed method uses two orthogonal directional min/max nonlinear filters with an adaptive shoot elimination scheme in order to effectively suppress the visually sensitive overshoot and undershoot. Experimental results show that the proposed method suppresses the overshoot and undershoot almost perfectly while maintaining the effect of the transient improvement. The applications of the proposed method include digital TVs, digital monitors, digital cameras/camcoders, portable media players(PMP), etc.
