  • This study aimed to examine the development and characteristics of the workers with upper limb musculoskeletal symptoms and disorders and to analyze the upper limb musculoskeletal symptoms and disorders for its relationship with the individual socio-demographic characteristics. This study investigated the effect on the limitations of physical activities using standardized surveillance tool and clinical diagnosis. Musculoskeletal symptoms and the limitations of physical activities were examined. The clinical diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders were carried out by physical examination, radiological examination and electromyography-electroneuronography for 22 workers in kitchen hood assembly process and 50 workers in toggle process of leather product manufacturing. The proportion of workers with musculoskeletal disorders was higher and the DASH score was also statistically higher in female and aged workers with longer working hours, longer household working hours, less leisure/hobby activity and higher physical load. Physical activities component score increased in the following order: workers in normal health, workers with musculoskeletal symptoms, and workers with musculoskeletal disorders as clinically diagnosed. Score for each DASH component increased in the following order: sports/performing arts ability, social activities, specific physical functional activities, work or other regular daily activities, work ability, psychological activities, insomnia and upper limb symptoms. The overall and each component DASH scores were higher in workers with symptoms of status praesens and of more severity, and receiving medical intervention. Musculoskeletal symptoms and disorders are associated with individual socio-demographic characteristics, and DASH score for physical activities of upper limb was higher in workers with musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal symptoms and disorders have a remarkable epidemiological significance for physical activities, social activities, work or other regular daily activities, upper limb symptoms and insomnia, where work ability, sports/performing arts ability and preventive measure is needed.

The main results are as follows; First, the general characteristics of the respondents in this study are forty or fifty years of age with above high school education with main income source of agriculture and middle class women living in agricultural communities more than 10 years. Second, considering the present and future planned activities of the Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City this study finds that there is high expectation of helping poor people and joining voluntary services. Third, the members of the Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City have actively participated in the local welfare service programs however, there is significant difference among people according to the age, living standard and joining period. Fourth, out of social welfare activities managed by the Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City the welfare service activities for old people and local community are most active and the participants in the welfare service activities for women and the youngsters are small. Thus, according to this study the Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City should consider the following three points in order to activate the social welfare service activities; First, as the members are expecting to expand the individual activities and to enhance the private improvement, the social welfare service activities should meet with the demands to improve self satisfaction of the participants. Second, new programs should be developed after reviewing the current programs in order to meet with the need of the members. Third, as the committee has not established a network system with government administrative organizations and relating institutions, and as its activities are concentrated in particular areas the committee should establish a new system to provide more efficient services in line with the cooperation with public organization and welfare resource suppliers.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association of Japanese schoolchildren's involvement in at-home meal preparation with food intake and cooking skill. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We included 1,207 fifth-grade children aged 10-11 years and one parent of each child. A cross-sectional survey was used to collect data on involvement in at-home meal preparation. Correspondence analysis was used to classify involvement in at-home meal preparation into three groups: food-related activities (cooking only or with other activities such as shopping, table-setting, clean up, and dishwashing), non-food-related activities (table-setting and/or clean up), and no (helping) activities. Food intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression models were used to examine involvement in at-home meal preparation associations. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 1,207 fifth-grade children. Vegetable intake was lower in the no (helping) activities group than the food-related activities group (95% CI; boys: 1.2, 5.1, girls: 2.0, 8.9). Fewer children in the non-food-related activities group reported they were able to make a portion of their meals compared with the food-related activities group (95% CI; boys: 1.6, 3.5; girls: 1.5, 3.2). CONCLUSIONS: Children in the food-related activities group showed more favorable food intake and cooking skills than children in the no (helping) activities or non-food-related activities group.

  • The objectives of this study were: a) to measure the satisfaction of who volunteered in the activity, and b) to identify factors related to their satisfaction from the activities, and c) to provide policy implications to improve their satisfaction. This study was based on a literature review and empirical analyses. The empirical analyses have been completed through individual interviews with community residents who volunteer the NGO activities in the Korean Federation for Environmental Movement. The major findings from empirical analysis were as follows: As a result of correlation analysis, nine variables affecting the degree of their satisfaction were "activity time", "sex", "support of family and friends", "understanding of environmental NGO activities and fields of environmental NGO activities", "contact points for the activities", "income and vocation". As a result of multiple regression analysis, the five variables affecting the degree of their satisfaction were "understanding of the NGO activities", "income", "support of family", "marital status", "activity period" and these five variables explained 49.1% of the degree of their satisfaction. Based on the empirical findings, the following suggestions could be offered for the environmental NGO activities. 1) Environmental NGOs should offer resident-friendly programs which may help the residents participate in the NGO activities, so the volunteers can participate in the activities with their family, friends, and neighbors. 2) Environmental NGOs should provide appropriate information and educational supports to community residents, which might facilitate them to have a sound understanding of the NGO activities. And the environmental NGOs should provide diverse activity programs to facilitate participation and to formulate eligible management system for the activities. 3) To enhance the satisfaction of participation, environmental action programs should be organized and conducted through a careful consideration of the status of the community, the characteristics of residents, and so on. To provide better contact points, environmental NGOs should cooperate with religious organizations in communities, social groups, media and so on.

  • It seems required to determine what might affect the technological innovation activities of manufacturing companies and what kind of role they could play for them to carry out technological innovation activities in an effective way. The objective of the present study is thus to conduct a depth empirical analysis of the structural relations among business environment, technological innovation activities and performance of manufacturing companies. From the analysis, following outcomes could be drawn: First, with regard to the relationship between business environment and technological innovation activities of manufacturing companies, it has become clear that the external environment is a factor that can influence technological innovation activities such as management of technical property, technological innovation system as well as technical network, while it exercises no impact upon adaptation of manufacturers to new technologies. The internal environment, on the other hand, turns out to have influence on such overall factors of technological innovation activities as management of technical property, technological innovation system, adaptation to new technologies and technical network; and Second, as for the relationship between technological innovation activities and their performance, it has been obvious that management of technical property and technological innovation system, both factors of technological innovation activities, affect the performance of product development and financial achievements of manufacturing companies. Their adaptation to new technologies will also affect their performance of product development as well as financial achievements. These findings suggest that it is important for manufacturing companies to set up an operating system that may be able to upgrade the practical applicability of their technological development activities in an attempt to promote performance of their technological innovation activities.
