  • Spherical active carbon materials have been used for the removal of pollutants in the area of food processing, water treatment, air purification, oral administration. Moreover, they are now expected to make an epoch in the areas of electronics, life science, environmental technology, and so on due to their superior physical properties. Carbon particles should be requested for the edgeless spherical shapes in order to minimize the loss due to the abrasion during the process and/or practical use, but the carbon particles manufactured from petroleum-based pitch do not meet these needs. Nowadays, thus, the spherical active carbon particles carbonized from various spherical polymer beads are studied with thermoplastic and/or thermosetting polymers. In this paper, the synthesis of spherical phenolic beads and furan beads, which are thermosetting polymers, and their carbonization techniques are examined.

  • Nano Pd spot-coated active carbon powders were synthesized by a hydrothermal-attachment method (HAA) using PVP capped Pd colloid in a high pressure bomb at $250^{\circ}C$, 450 psi, respectively. The PVP capped Pd colloid was synthesized by the precipitation-redispersion method. PVP capped Pd nano particles showed the narrow size distribution and their particle sizes were less than 8nm in diameter. In the case of nano Pd-spot coated active carbon powders, nano-sized Pd particles were adhered in the active carbon powder surface by HAA method. The component of Pd was homogeneously distributed on the active carbon surface.

  • In this study, we devoted to kinetic measurement of the catalytic oxidation of iron-containing flame soot particles and better understanding the role of catalytic particles on carbon oxidation in particular at low temperature, targeting on autothermal regeneration of diesel particulate filter by diesel exhaust gas. Carbon-based Fe-containing particles generated by spraying ferrocene-doped diesel fuel in an oxy-hydrogen flame are tested and compared with a commercial carbon black powder for thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Induced coupled plasma-Atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). As a result, we found that a small amount of the ferrocene addition led to significant reductions in a on-set temperature and an activation energy of the carbon oxidation as well. An oxygenated surface complex forming at the particle surface could be thought as active species that would be readily consumed in particular at low temperature.

  • In this study, we synthesized pH-controlled resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) gels through the polymerization of two starting materials: resorcinol and formaldehyde. The prepared RF gels were dried using an acetone substitution method, and they were subsequently carbonized under nitrogen atmosphere to obtain carbon xerogels (CX_Y) prepared at different pH (Y). The carbon xerogels were utilized as active materials for coin-type organic supercapacitor electrodes to investigate the influence of pH on the electrochemical properties of the carbon xerogels. The carbon xerogels prepared at lower pH (CX_9.5 and CX_10) exhibited sufficient particle growth, with a three-dimensional network of particles during the RF gel formation, resulting in the development of abundant mesopores. Conversely, the carbon xerogels prepared at higher pH (CX_11 and CX_12) retained densely packed structures of small particles, leading to pore collapse and low specific surface areas. Consequently, CX_9.5 and CX_10 showed high specific surface areas, and provided ample adsorption sites for the formation of electric double layers with electrolyte ions. Moreover, the three-dimensional particle network in CX_9.5 and CX_10 significantly enhanced electrical conductivity. The presence of well-developed mesopores in these materials further facilitated the effective transport of electrolyte ions, contributing to their superior performance as organic supercapacitor electrodes. This study confirmed that pH-controlled carbon xerogels are one of the promising active materials for organic supercapacitor electrodes. Furthermore, we concluded that pH during RF gel formation is a crucial factor determining the electrode performance of the carbon xerogels, highlighting the need for precise pH control to obtain high-performance carbon xerogel electrodes.

  • Carbon rich fly ash was recently reported to have compositions that are ideal for use as a precursor and catalyst for carbon nanotube growth. This fly ash powder is mostly composed of pure carbon, predominantly present as sp2. In this work, the effect of sonication time on the morphology and structural properties of carbon rich fly ash particles is reported. The obtained results show that ultrasound treatment is an effective tool for producing ultrafine particles/fragments with higher porosity, which might be suitable for the adsorption of gasses. Moreover, carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) of this fly ash were produced in parallel using the ball milling technique, and were evaluated as reinforcements for epoxy based composites. These CNPs have almost spherical shapes with particle sizes of around 30 nm. They were found to have strong C=O carbonyl group bonds, which might be generated during the ball milling process. The tensile testing results of a fly ash CNP reinforced epoxy composite showed significant improvements in the mechanical properties, mainly in the stiffness of the polymer. The stiffness value was increased by around 23% of that of neat epoxy. These CNPs with chemically active groups might also be useful for other applications.

  • Titanium carbides are widely used for cutting tools and grinding wheels, because of their superior physical properties such as high melting temperature, high hardness, high wear resistance, good thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. The common synthesizing method for the titanium carbide powders is carbo-thermal reduction from the mixtures of titanium oxide($TiO_2$) and carbon black. The purpose of the present research is to fabricate nano TiC powders using titanium salt and titanium hydride by the mechanochemical process(MCP). The initial elements used in this experiment are liquid $TiCl_4$(99.9%), $TiH_2$(99.9%) and active carbon(<$32{\mu}m$, 99.9%). Mg powders were added to the $TiCl_4$ solution in order to induce the reaction with Cl-. The weight ratios of the carbon and Mg powders were theoretically calculated. The TiC and $MgCl_2$ powders were milled in the planetary milling jar for 10 hours. The 40 nm TiC powders were fabricated by wet milling for 4 hours from the $TiCl_4$+C+Mg solution, and 300 nm TiC particles were obtained by using titanium hydride.

  • This study examined the carbon corrosion at Pt/C interface in proton exchange membrane fuel cell environment. The Pt nano particles were electrodeposited on carbon substrate, and then the corrosion behavior of the carbon electrode was examined. The carbon electrodes with Pt nano electrodeposits exhibited the higher oxidation rate and lower oxidation overpotential compared with that of the electrode without Pt. This phenomenon was more active at $75^{\circ}C$ than $25^{\circ}C$. In addition, the current transients and the corresponding power spectral density (PSD) of the carbon electrodes with Pt nano electrodeposits were much higher than those of the electrode without Pt. The carbon corrosion at Pt/C interface was highly accelerated by Pt nano electrodeposits. Furthermore, the polarization and power density curves of PEMFC showed degradation in the performance due to a deterioration of cathode catalyst material and Pt dissolution.

  • Atmospheric corrosion poses a significant threat to durability of metallic materials and safety of structures, making precise prediction of corrosion rates crucial in industrial and engineering settings. Understanding the exact rate of corrosion is essential. However, accurate inclusion of various environmental factors that can influence atmospheric corrosion in the calculation of corrosion rate is a complex challenge. This study introduces a physics-based model that incorporates electrochemical methods and considers active surface area affected by surface contaminants to estimate atmospheric corrosion rate of carbon steel. The model can evaluate corrosion levels using key factors such as chloride deposition rate, relative humidity, and the presence of surface particles. By integrating these considerations, this model moves beyond empirical estimations, providing a more stable prediction of corrosion rate that is less susceptible to environmental variations. This model provides a robust tool for defense applications, offering precise insights into the dynamics of atmospheric corrosion that could enhance the maintenance and safety of weapon systems.

  • A pulsed laser ablation deposition (PLAD) technique has been used for producing fine particle as well as thin film at relatively low substrate temperatures. However, in order to manufacture and evaluate such materials in detail, motions of plume particles generated by laser ablation have to be understood and interactions between the particles by ablation and gas plasma have to be clarified. Therefore, this paper was focused on the understanding of plume motion in laser ablation assisted by Ar plasma at 50(mTorr). Two-dimensional hybrid model consisting of fluid and particle models was developed and three kinds of plume particles which are carbon atom (C), ion $(C^+)$ and electron were considered in the calculation of particle method It was obtained that ablated $C^+$ was electrically captured in Ar plasmas by strong electric field (E). The difference between motions of the ablated electrons and $C^+$ made E strong and the collisional processes active.
