  • The aim of this paper was to improve the shortcomings of Pitcher Concrete, a conventional ethylene-based polymer used in combination with the other components, and present basic data for use as improved road pavement material by applying an acrylic polymer. Existing ethylene polymer-based pitcher concrete materials were selected. Acrylic polymer was then added and the resulting mixture was evaluated. The compressive strength of the existing ethylene-based polymer pitcher concrete combination was low due to the large air gap, and a compressive strength of 24MPa was observed on the 28th day of road use, as defined by KS for an acrylic polymer-based pitcher concrete combination. Regarding the bending strength, the combined strength of the acrylic polymer-based pitcher concrete was excellent, and the factor of the pitcher was measured above the reference, 0.1(mm/s), in all variables. All parameters measured were less than 1%. The acrylic polymer mixing characteristics were able to maintain the dynamic modulus of elasticity for more than 120 cycles, but not more than 80 cycles for the other combinations. Therefore, the addition of more acrylic polymer than conventional ethylene polymer base is effective in improving the durability.

  • Several dual-curable acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) were synthesized by the radical polymerization of acrylic monomers containing benzophenone, hydroxyl, and alkyl groups. The optimum extent of UV-induced cure was determined by varying the content of the benzophenone groups (the photoinitiator) from 0.5 to 1.5 wt%. The weight average molecular weight of the polymers obtained ranged from 300,000 to 700,000 amu. The coated pressure-sensitive adhesives were cured either by short UV exposure to induce the grafting of acrylic polymers, or by heating for 6 hat $60^{\circ}C$ to promote the reactions between the polyisocyanates and hydroxyl groups. The dual-curing behavior was determined by monitoring both processes quantitatively by infrared spectroscopy. The developed dual-curable acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives were found to compensate for the limitations in UV-induced curing of thick coatings.

  • Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA) was prepared by UV radiation curing and the peel energy and physical properties of PSA were investigated. The increase of amount of acrylic acid leads to improve the peel energy, associated with the substrate having smooth surface and high layer thickness. The high peel energy is obtained when the direction of irregularity in substrate is horizontal with the peeling direction. This is attributed to the increase of resistance to peeling in spite of decrease of wetting and the result corresponds to our supposition.

  • The effects of polymer-cement ratio on strength properties of ultrarapid-hardening acrylic-modified concretes. As a result, the flexural and tensile strengths of ultrarapid-hardening acrylic-modified concretes increase with increasing of polymer-cement ratio. In particular, the acrylic-modified concretes with a polymer-cement ratio of 20% provide approximately 1.5 times higher flexural and tensile strengths than unmodified concretes. Such high strength development is attributed to the high flexrul and tensile strengths of arcylic polymer and the improved bond between cement hydrates and aggregates because of the addition of acrylic polymer. However, the compressive strengths of ultrarapid-hardening acrylic-modified concretes decrease with increasing of polymer-cement ratio.

  • A new ionomeric polymer-metal composite (IPMC) was prepared using a cast membrane of acrylic copolymer, which was synthesized by radical copolymerization of fluoroalkyl acrylate and acrylic acid (AA). To examine its performance as a new electroactive polymer, the current and displacement responses to a step voltage applied across the IPMC were measured. The largest responses were observed when the AA content in the copolymer was $10.6\;wt\%$.

The Effect of Crosslinking on the Actuation of Electroactive IPMC Prepared with Fluoroalkyl Methacrylate/Acrylic Acid/HEMA Copolymer (Fluoroalkyl Methacrylate/Acrylic Acid/2-HEMA 공중합체로 제조한 IPMC의 구동 특성에 미치는 가교의 영향)

  • In order to enhance the actuation force of ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) made with the acrylic copolymer of fluoroalkyl methacryate, acrylic acie, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA), the hydroxy group of HEMA was corsslinked with 1,3-diethoxy-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane. The water uptake was reduced and the mechanical strengths and the actuation force of the membrane was improved by crosslinking. However, current and deformation responses of IPMC were decreased by crosslinking.

  • Solution type pressure sensitive acrylic adhesives were synthesized from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) as a base monomer and acrylic acid as a functional monomer. The surface energy and basic physical properties of synthesized PSA (pressure sensitive adhesives) were investigated as a function of contents of acrylic acid and crosslinking agent. The structures of adhesive were identified by FTIR. Viscosities and molecular weights of PSA were measured by a Brookfield viscometer and GPC, respectively. Consequently, molecular weight and viscosity increased as the contents of acrylic acid increased up to 6 wt% and then decreased at higher contents. Surface energy increased as the contents of acrylic acid increased owing to the increase of COOH groups, which yielded the enhancement of polarity of PSA. On the other hands, their peel strengths were inversely proportional to molecular weight and showed tendencies of decreasing as the contents of acrylic acid and crosslinking agent increased.

  • The acrylic monomers were graft-polymerized to starch as matrix polymer by emulsion polymerization. Viscosity and particle size of the emulsion were increased with starch contents due to interaction with water and particle swelling toward the water phase by hydroxy group of starch. Chemical stability of the emulsion was also increased with enhancement of starch, but water and alkali resistance were reduced with increasing starch contents because of the increasement of hyrophilicity. Opacity of the starch-acrylic emulsion compound containing calcium carbonate was decreased with contents of starch by its intrinsic color. The film of starch-acrylic polymer showed more clear appearance with increasing starch contents owing to enhancement of amorphous state.

  • A semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogel composed of crosslinked chitosan and poly (acrylic acid-co-crotonic acid) was prepared in the presence of glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinker. Fourier-transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy were employed to confirm the structure of the semi-IPN hydrogel. The swelling capacity of hydrogel was shown to be affected by the monomers weight ratio, chitosan content, initiator and GA concentrations. The results also indicated that the semi-IPN hydrogel had different swelling capacity at various pHs. Additionally, the swelling behavior of the hydrogel was investigated in aqueous solutions of NaCl, $CaCl_2$, and $AlCl_3$.

  • UV irradiated acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives(PSAs) are prepared to be used for thermal pad in plasma display panel(PDP). The effect of the chemical structure of side-chain in comonomer and of crosslinking agent on wet-out property of acrylic PSAs in wide temperature range were investigated. The correlationship between viscoelastic behavior and adhesion properties, such as tack and peel strength, was also studied. The experimental results supported that wet-out and adhesion properties of acrylic PSAs were enhanced inversely proportional to side-chain length of comonomer in wide temperature range. The peel energy clearly increased in acrylic PSAs prepared by using di(ethylene glycol) dimethylacrylate (DEGDMA) for crosslinking agent. The results might be due to the difference in the glass transition temperature and viscoelastic behavior of acrylic PSAs.
