  • In this paper, a temperature dependent acoustic receiving characteristics of underwater acoustic sensor is studied by theoretical and experimental investigations. Two different types (low mid frequency sensor and high frequency sensor) of underwater acoustic sensors are designed with different configuration of baffle and conditioning plate. The temperature dependent characteristics of the acoustic sensors are investigated within the temperature range from $-2^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$. The material properties of the piezoelectric ceramics, molding and baffle, which are the primary materials of the acoustic sensors, are measured with temperature change. The temperature dependent RVS (Receiving Voltage Sensitivity) characteristics of the acoustic sensors are simulated by using the measured material properties. The RVS changes of the acoustic sensors are measured by changing temperature in the watertank where the acoustic sensors are installed. The measured and the simulated data show that the temperature dependent characteristics of the acoustic sensors are mainly dependent for the sound speed changes of the molding material.

  • This paper described about the acoustic wave measurement method to diagnose GIS for particles. We measured and analyzed the signals of acoustic waves with two type acoustic sensors having 125kHz and 50kHz resonant frequency respectively when the particles were bounced on the inside surfaces of GIS tanks by the electrostatic force. To use two sensors for the diagnosis of GIS, we set up the calibration method for this measurement method. We showed the output characteristics of two sensors according to the sizes and materials of particles in the experiment. As the results, the inception voltages bouncing particles depended on the materials and the extinction voltages bouncing them depended on the sizes and materials. We found out that the relationship between sizes of particles and output voltages of sensors didn't have linearity but the ratios of between peak values of two sensors depended on the materials of GIS enclosures and the sizes of particles.

  • We report on the development of a fiber optic hydrophone consists of a sensing Michelson interferometer and a compensating Mach-Zehnder interferometer for optical path length compensation. The double interferometer configuration has the following advantages: the hydrophone can be made more small; a laser source with a relatively short coherence length can be used; and the compensating interferometer can be located near the signal processing electronics, far away from the sensing interferometer and noise introduced by reference arm can be greatly reduced. The performance of the hydrophone is evaluated experimentally by immersing the sensing interferometer in a water tank to detect underwater acoustic signals generated by an acoustic wave projector. Experimental results show that over the frequency range of 1 to 4 kHz, the hydrophone has an almost flat response with an average normalized sensitivity of -302 dB re 1/ μ Pa.

  • We present a novel fault diagnosis methodology using acoustic sensor systems and neural independent component analysis for large-scaled power machines. Acoustic sensors are carried out to measure sounds generated from power machines whose signal is used to determine whether fault is occurred or not. Acoustic measurements are independently mixed and deteriorated from original source signals. We propose a demixing algorithm against such mixed signals by means of independent component analysis which is achieved based on information theory and higher-order statistics to derive learning mechanism.

  • In excavating tunnels, shield tunneling machines having many cutters on their cutter planes are used. Not many observation data being available in the detection system, optimal observation policy is very important. From this viewpoint, we previously considered the optimal location of acoustic sensors on the cutter plane and also the optimal observation policy for the case where three receiving transducers were used, and showed that the optimal sensor location was given as arbitrary equally-spaced points on the cutter plane circle, and that the optimal rotating angles were also found to be arbitrary. In application, however, it is often difficult to locate sensors at arbitrary positions or to use three sensors from the viewpoints of machine structure and cost. This paper considers the optimal observation policy for detecting anomlous plane objects for the case where two receiving transducers are used and the case where three receiving transducers are located only on a diameter of the cutter plane.

  • The simplest method for measuring output currents of the three phase inverters is to measure them with three current sensors such as hall sensors. This method requires at least two current sensors, and these types of sensors are somewhat expensive. More economical method is measuring DC link current with a simple shunt resistor, then, reconstructing output current using the DC link current value and the switching status. However, in low speed region, the measurement becomes difficult and even impossible due to the requirement of minimum switching duration for A/D conversion. These problems can be overcome by limitation of switching duration. Limitation of switching, however, causes voltage and current distortion. Owing to compensation, distortion can be effectively suppressed. However these increase acoustic noise due to increment of current ripple. In this paper, a current measurement method is proposed, which can reduce minimum switching duration resulting in reduction of acoustic noise. The validity of proposed method is confirmed through experiment.

  • This paper described the outputs of acoustic sensors due to the vibration of particles in the mock up GIS. We used the two type of acoustic sensors which had 150kHz resonant frequency and 60kHz resonant frequency respectively. In the experiment of the mock up GIS, we paid attention to the relationship between outputs of sensors and particles and we found that the ratios of outputs related with the lengths of particles. We developed the apparatus including the above diagnosis algorithm for GIS.

  • Combination of the parametric and the wavelet analyses of acoustic emission (AE) signals was applied to identify the failure modes in carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite laminates during tensile testing. AE signals detected by surface mounted lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensors were analyzed by parametric analysis based on the time of occurrence which classifies AE signals corresponding to failure modes. The frequency band level-energy analysis can distinguish the dominant frequency band for each failure mode. It was observed that the same type of failure mechanism produced signals with different characteristics depending on the stacking sequences and the type of sensors. This indicates that the proposed method can identify the failure modes of the signals if the stacking sequences and the sensors used are known.

  • In this paper, we describe that the acoustic PD detection is examined in the various structures and position shapes of sensors. We find that the acoustic waves rate the complexity in various structures and position shapes of sensors may reduce the complexity of the acoustic wave in the PD detection of transformers.
